Electro-conductive composites based on titania and carbon nanotubes
Inorganic Materials, 2013
Ceramic matrix composites with carbon materials are finding increasing use in modern industry [1-5], and the use of carbon nanotubes and nanofibers as components that modify the matrix has also received wide attention. For example, one immediate effect of remarkable electronic conductivity and extremely elongated shape of carbon nanotubes would be that their introduction into ceramic material, even at low amounts, would enhance the electrical conductivity of the latter. The composites being conductive may be useful for fabricating electrodes for use in various elec trochemical devices. Thus, that electro conductive composites can be obtained using small additions of carbon nanomaterials has certain advantages in com parison with other approaches to enhance the electri cal conductivity of ceramics. When fabricating electro conductive composites with a dielectric matrix it is essential to take into account the amount and electrical conductivity of the filler, as well as the morphology of its particles. A large number of composites based on a wide variety of ceramics, such as Al 2 O 3 [4-8], Si 3 N 4 [8, 9], SiC [10], SiO 2 [11], TiO 2 [12-14], ZnO [14, 15], TiN [16], ZrO 2 [17] and others are currently investigated, including such carbon fillers as soot, nanofibers, multi and single walled nanotubes, and grapheme like carbon nanostructures [4-20].
Electrical properties study of multi-walled carbon nanotubes/hybrid-glass nanocomposites
Journal of Sol-Gel Science and Technology, 2014
Electrical properties of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs)/hybrid-glass nanocomposites prepared by the fast-sol-gel reaction were investigated in light of percolation theory. A good correlation was found between the experimental results and the theory. We obtained a percolation threshold / c = 0.22 wt%, and a critical exponent of t = 1.73. These values are reported for the first time for a silica-based system. The highest conductivity measured on the MWNT/hybrid-glass nanocomposites was r & 10-3 (X cm)-1 for 2 wt% carbon nanotube (CNT) loading. The electrical conductivity was at least 12 orders of magnitude higher than that of pure silica. Electrostatic force microscopy and conductive-mode atomic force microscopy studies demonstrated conductivity at the micro-level, which was attributed to the CNT dispersed in the matrix. It appears that the dispersion in our MWNT/hybrid-glass system yields a particularly low percolation threshold compared with that of a MWNT/silicaglass system. Materials with electrical conductivities described in this work can be exploited for anti-static coating.
Ultra-Low Temperature Sintering and Dielectric Properties of SiO2 -Filled Glass Composites
Journal of the American Ceramic Society, 2013
Ultra low temperature co-fired ceramics system based on zinc borate 3ZnO-2B 2 O 3 (3Z2B) glass matrix and SiO 2 filler was investigated with regard to the phase composition, the microstructure and the dielectric properties as functions of the filler content and sintering temperature. The softening temperature of 554°C and the crystallization temperature of around 650°C for the glass were confirmed by Differential Thermal Analysis result. The X-ray diffraction results show that all SiO 2-filled samples were made up of SiO 2 , a-Zn(BO 2) 2 , Zn 3 B 2 O 6 phases. And there was no chemical reaction between SiO 2 and the glass during densification. And then the dielectric constant decreased with the increasing content of SiO 2. At the level of 15 wt% SiO 2 addition, the composites can be densified at a sintering temperature of 650°C for 30 min, and showed the optimal dielectric properties at 1 MHz with the dielectric constant of 6.1 and the dielectric loss of 1.3 3 10 À3 , which demonstrates a good potential for use in LTCC technology. Preparation and Electrical Characterization of Zn-Titanate / Borosilicate Glass Composites
Silicon, 2018
Samples belonging to the [(ZrO 2) 0.92 (Y 2 O 3) 0.08 ] 1؊x (RuO 2) x system, where 04x40.1 (mol), have been synthesized by a polymeric sol-gel route and sintered in air at 1400°C for 2 h. The RuO 2-YSZ solid solution limit is found at x ؍ 0.05 at 1400°C by X-ray diffraction and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements. The electrical conductivity of the studied materials decreases with ruthenia additions. At high temperature (700-850°C) and low oxygen partial pressure, these materials behave as mixed oxygen ion-electronic conductors. The electronic conductivity as a function of P O shows a dependence of ؊1/4 and an activation energy of 0.98 eV. The electronic contribution is explained on the basis of redox equilibrium between trivalent Ru 3؉ and divalent Ru 2؉. The EPR spectra of polycrystalline sintered samples confirm the presence of Ru 3؉ .

Dielectric relaxation behavior of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)-reinforced silicone elastomer nanocomposites has been studied as a function of filler loading in a wide frequency range (10−1–106 Hz). The effect of MWCNT loading on the real and imaginary parts of impedance is distinctly visible. The significant change in the impedance parameters on filler loading is explained on the basis of interfacial polarization in a heterogeneous medium and relaxation dynamics of polymer chains. The electrical modulus formalism has been used to investigate the conductivity and relaxation phenomena of the system. The frequency dependence of ac conductivity is explained using percolation theory. The existence of percolation phenomenon in the composites is discussed on the basis of electrical conductivity and morphology of the composites. The percolation threshold (as studied by electrical conductivity) occurs in the range of 4 phr of MWCNT loading. The scanning electron photomicrographs show...

Electrical properties of ZnO-CuO ceramic composites with varying composition were investigated. The electrical conductivity increased with increasing CuO volume fraction between 1 mol% to 95 mol%. Impedance response showed three semicircles, indicating three resistive elements contributing to the total resistance of the composite. A new model based on the equivalent circuits was developed to explain the contribution of grain boundaries to the resistance of the composite. The change of electrical conductivity was explained by the probability change of two equivalent circuits.
Dielectric and ac conductivity studies of ZnO/Eu3+: Titanosilicate matrix
2014
ZnO nanoparticles /Eu 3+ doped SiO 2-TiO 2 matrices were synthesized through sol-gel route. Structural and dielectric properties of ZnO nanocrystallites co-doped with Eu 3+ in SiO 2-TiO 2 matrices were presented. The HRTEM and XRD measurements confirm the presence of ZnO nanocrystallites. The dielectric and electrical conductivity studies of the samples are completed for a frequency of 100 Hz to 2 MHz. The conductivity variation with the ZnO content in the Eu 3+ doped SiO 2-TiO 2 system were explained by correlating the presence of ionic contribution to the electrical conductivity process. From the frequency dependence of dielectric constant and conductivity, the Cole-Cole parameters and power law parameters were evaluated. The dielectric relaxation phenomena were investigated using the dielectric moduli formulation.
