Jaundice is a life threatening disease affects human liver, the symptoms manifested in the form of extreme weakness, constipation, nausea, yellowing of the eyes, tongue, skin and urine; dull ache in the liver region of stomach and possible itching all over the body. The yellow colour first appears in the cornea of eyes and then spreads to the whole skin. The excess of bile pigments circulating in the blood give yellow colour to the eye and skin. There are several conditions that may interrupt the elimination of bilirubin from the blood and cause jaundice. The present work is focused on medicinal plants used to treat jaundice and hepatitis. A Mini-review on Medicinal Plants Used for the Treatment of Jaundice in the Canon of Medicine

Context: Jaundice is a common gastrointestinal system disorder globally. Considering the potential of herbal remedies in traditional medical systems, this study was performed to explore medicinal plants used for the treatment of jaundice in the Canon of medicine. Evidence Acquisition: This narrative review was done on one of the most important textbooks in traditional Persian medicine. Different keywords, like Yárághān and Zárdī, were searched in the book, and a list of plants used was prepared. We searched for recent literature to find any supportive evidence to find the established mechanism of action, as well. Results: At the end of the study, 32 plants were found in the Canon of medicine, which most of them had at least one experimental or clinical study clarifying their mechanism of action to treat jaundice or decrease bilirubin. Conclusions: There are potential remedies in traditional Persian medicine resources, which may be useful in future trials to treat jaundice.

Jaundice is a very common symptom especially in the developing countries. It is associated with several hepatic diseases which are still major causes of death. The traditional utilization of ethno-medicinal plants used for the treatment of jaundice and other liver disorder is commonly known among ethnic groups. The present study was carried out among the forest fringe villages of Chilapatta Reserve Forest in foothills of the eastern Sub-Hi-malayan mountain belts of West Bengal. The aim of the study was to document the traditionally used ethno-medicinal plant resources against jaundice and other liver disorders. A total of 19 plant species belonging to 15 families and 17 genera were documented. These 19 species were dominated by trees (07), herbs (05), shrubs (03) and four species of climbers. The plant families dominating the list were Apiaceae, Dioscoreaceae, Euphorbiaceae and Moraceae with 2 species each. Fruits (08) were the most dominant plant parts used for the treatment followed by leaves of 07 species. The plant parts are employed by the inhabitants in the form of infusion, decoction, paste, juice, etc., either as a sole drug species or in combination with other species. The documented plants and their procedure for utilization can be a useful tool for scientific community for further evaluation and recommendations to the practicing communities.

Ethnomedicinal plants have a significant role in the lives of people of rural and tribal areas. Thousands of medicinal plant species are used to treat various diseases, including jaundice, and are considered an important therapeutic resource to minimize these diseases. Jaundice (icterus) is a chronic disease that occurs when the amount of bilirubin in the blood increases. This review describes different ethnomedicinal plants used for curing jaundice by tribal and rural people of Himachal Pradesh. The study reveals 87 ethnomedicinal plant species belonging to 51 different families, which are used for treating jaundice in Himachal Pradesh. Liver Disorders and Potential Medicinal plants: A Review Study

Liver is a large organ that maintains metabolic functions and detoxification processes in the body. Liver disease occurs throughout the world irrespective of age, sex, region or race. According to World Health Organization, about 46% of global diseases and 59% of the mortality is because of chronic diseases and almost 35 million people in the world die of chronic liver diseases. Liver and its dysfunctions are highly defined and well described in Ayurveda in relation to pathogens (dosha), tissues (dhatu) and its development. Liver disorders include a group of diseases of the liver and biliary system. There are no any complete, safe and effective remedies available for liver disorders. Treatments used are found to give only symptomatic relief. A number of herbs, classical and significant formulations in various dosage forms are mentioned in Ayurved classics for liver diseases. The details of experimental and pre-clinical studies conducted on single and compound Ayurvedic preparations for their efficacy against liver cancer and other hepatic ailments are also important. They strongly emphasize Ayurvedic products as a scientifically feasible medical practice and an unconventional entity. But well planned clinical trials to establish the safety and efficacy is the need. Ayurvedic medicine has an opportunity to develop new drugs and contribute as safe and cost effective treatment for Liver disorders. In this paper, authors have reviewed all the liver disorders and potential medicinal plants which are scientifically proved.
