The Increasing Focus on Managing Relationships and Customer Retention

There has been unprecedented need for firms and organizations today to focus on customer service, retention and loyalty as a way of increasing their competitive advantage and improving their bottom line. This paper discusses the increasing focus on managing relationships and customer retention in recent years. Initially customer retention strategies are identified, followed by an analysis of the benefits of value creation for both customers and services providers, key indicators of customer relationship and managing relationship. The study identified the competitive nature of business today and hence many businesses devising strategies such as switching barriers and retaining employees to retain customers. Consumers are increasingly developing relationships with numerous services providers rather than committing to one, hence associating loyalty with repeat patronage rather than long-term commitment.

Toward a Theoretical Framework of Relationship Marketing in the Business Context

Purpose-This paper addresses the issues related to the practice of relationship marketing at the organizational level. Considering the infl uence of various factors, this study off ers a theoretical framework necessary to create, maintain, and enhance the business relationship. Design/methodology/approach-The research is based on a systematic review of existing literature, including journal articles, subject-specifi c professional websites, and textbooks on relationship marketing. Literature reviews relating to the Nordic School, Industrial Marketing and Purchasing (IMP) Group Approach, and the North American School are included. Findings-The relationship marketing approach has evolved since the pre-industrial era, and more organizations are embracing this marketing stance in the current, post-industrial era. A theoretical framework that consists of infl uential variables for creating, maintaining, and enhancing relationships is proposed to explore this multidimensional construct. The role of service providers in the service industry cannot be overemphasized, as they supply intangible, inseparable and variable, yet unique products and services to consumers. The personnel of these providers are very crucial for value creation and consumer satisfaction necessary for customer retention. Hence, service providers must ensure that they properly and adequately manage the relationships that ensue between themselves and their customers. This paper discusses the characteristics of services, the key elements in the service industry, the customer relationship management (CRM), total quality management (TQM), the benefits of CRM to service providers and customers. Conclusively, it proffers strategies of developing customer retention that would enhance effective relationships between service providers and their customers especially in medical services.
Customer Portfolio Management – The Construct and Performance
Customer portfolio management (CPM) is an important area in theories of relationship marketing and customer relationship management. It focuses on the whole portfolio of customer relationships, from transactions to strategic partnerships and their management based on the value of the various customers to the selling company. The academic research so far has produced a wealth of conceptual knowledge about CPM in terms of proposing and testing a large number of relationship portfolio models. However, almost no empirical research about implementation of this concept in business or its effect on performance exists.
