The Nigeria's role in the maintenance of peace and stability in the African continent is great due to its Afrocentric policy. Nigeria has taken part in a numerous peacekeeping and peace-making processes in the continent. In fact, the country's good largesse has cut across the African continent and beyond where the Nigerian peacekeepers had made the country proud in their efforts abroad when returning peace and stability back to the conflicts zones. However, while Nigeria has been making series of sacrifices both length, breath, left, right and centre, committing huge resources (both human and material resources) towards its peace maintenance in the continents particularly the African region, its home / domestic has been faced with series of havocs. These domestic problems ranging from poverty, insecurity, unemployment, malnutrition, ethno-religious crises and many other more had drawn the attention of scholars on the needs for Nigeria to be more rational in its big brother roles in Africa. Apart from that, the Nigeria's big brother role in Africa has not been appreciated by the beneficiaries. Nigeria has often been paid back with ingratitude by African countries to which it had been a benefactor. These formed parts of the gap to be filled in this study. This study therefore employs historical and descriptive methodologies through the use of secondary data to assess the burden shouldered by Nigeria in its course for peace and

Nigeria has contributed immensely to the stability of the African continent. This is part of the role the country has been playing since its independence in 1960. The role of Nigeria in ensuring peace and stability in West African sub-region and the entire Africa has saved numerous countries from their scourge of wars. This has prevented Africa from experiencing the reoccurrence of Rwanda genocide in the continent. The timely intervention of Nigeria in the crises of countries like Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea-Bissau among others have saved those countries from disintegration. The study analyse the role played by Nigeria in ensuring peace and stability in some countries in Africa particularly the West Africa sub-region. It was revealed from the study that Nigeria cannot pretend not to be concerned about any crisis happening in Africa, particularly in her neighbouring West Africacountries due to the likely repercussion of such crisis which may have negative impact on it. The study makes use of realism theory which is characterized by statism, survival and self-help. Although, the international system is anarchic, but self-help duty of the State, political and military power are tools that can sustain the international relations among countries. The study adopts qualitative method that use both primary and secondary source of data. Twelve informants were
The Role of Nigeria in Peacekeeping Operations from 1960 to 2013
Peace keeping is a peaceful third party intervention which operates with a set of guiding principles that include the consent of the parties to the conflict, impartiality and the non use of force except in self-defense. This paper examines peacekeeping operations across the globe, particularly, in Africa and West African sub-region, with emphasis on Nigeria's role in the Liberian and Sierra Leone crises. It also analyzes the costs and benefits of the operations to the country within the period under review. The idealist theory was adopted as the tool of analysis, while the methodology was the systematic qualitative content analysis derived mainly from secondary sourced materials. The paper found out that keeping peace in one country is invariably saving an entire sub-region or region from possible spillover effects. More so, the resources expended on peacekeeping operations by Nigeria are at the expense of the country's domestic imperatives –welfare of citizens and infrastructural development. The paper concludes by recommending reduction of financial cost of peacekeeping and prioritizing the welfare of citizens.

The thesis, examines Nigerian’s role in peacekeeping exercise across the globe under the United Nations Organisation, with special emphasis on the Liberian and Sierra-Leone crises. NIGERIA INVOLVEMENT IN INTERNATIONAL PEACE KEEPING OPERATIONS. A CASE STUDY.docx
The foreign policy of a country or a nation is the mirror of its domestic reality. This begins with the identification and articulation of national interest. It is convincing to assert that a nation’s interest is the principal consideration in the formation and execution of its national policies, both in domestic and international levels. One of Nigeria’s foreign policy is its interest in the maintenance of peace and security in Africa. Peacekeeping is no longer the sole prerogative and responsibility of the big power states. This has been clear ever since independence, Nigeria had being actively involved in peacekeeping through the United Nations (UN), the African Union (AU), and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). This is due to the recurrence of intra state conflict in various parts of the world, most especially in developing states. This has put to task the word sustainable peace. Therefore, this project research will explore into Nigeria and its involvement in maintaining peace and security internationally, its contributions to the peace process, major challenges and problems, and the way of strategizing for the future. Thus, the researcher will critically analyse Nigeria involvement in Liberia, Darfur, and Mali.

Peace keeping is a peaceful third party intervention which operates within a set of guiding principles that include the consent of the parties to the conflict, impartiality and the non-use of force except in self-defense. This paper examines Nigeria's peacekeeping operations across the globe. Nigeria has spent tremendously both in human and material resources in her peace keeping efforts. The study therefore, examined efforts at mediating and resolving the Intra-State/Inter-State conflicts that nearly brought the States concerned to the brink of total collapse. The complex interdependence theory was adopted as the tool of analysis, while the methodology was the systematic qualitative content analysis derived mainly from secondary sourced materials. The paper found out that keeping peace in one country is invariably saving an entire sub-region or region from possible spillover effects. More so, the resources expended on peacekeeping operations by Nigeria are at the expense of the country's domestic imperatives-welfare of citizens and infrastructural development. The Role of Nigeria in Peace Building, Conflict Resolution, and Peacekeeping since 1960
The organizers of this workshop have asked me to speak on Nigeria's role in what can only be very broadly termed conflict management. Conflict management encompasses a wide range of issues such as peace building, conflict resolution, and peacekeeping. To undertake an analysis of Nigeria's role in conflict management since 1960 therefore is to focus on its various efforts towards building, supporting, and enforcing peace across Africa and the rest of the world. Such efforts are grounded concretely not only in the fact of our material resources and military capabilities; they are also historically grounded in our commitment to peace, justice, and equality of all peoples, as well as in the belief in, and respect for the right of all peoples to collectively determine their destiny. It is these commitments that have informed our role in peace building regionally, continentally, and globally.
NIGERIA'S PARTICIPATION IN SECURITY STABILIZATION IN WEST AFRICA: MATTERS ARISING
The management of conflict in West Africa has been a subject of significant concern to the international community since the early 1990s. The preponderance of conflict in West Africa has derailed regional development and posed a threat to its growth. However, one cannot undermine the ECOWAS security efforts in peacekeeping and peacemaking operations in the Sub-region. Nigeria has maintained a leading role in ECOMOG's collective efforts to root out insurgent forces in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Côte d'Ivoire, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Niger, Senegal and Togo. This work reviews Nigeria's role in security stabilisation in West Africa since the advent of armed conflict in Liberia and also those efforts at post-conflict social and economic reconstruction. The study relied on secondary sources for information and a desk review study was undertaken. The paper recommends that harmonious working relationship should exist among policy makers and synergies between the security forces of ECOWAS member states.
