Speech Act Analysis of English Teacher Talk at SMP Negeri 1 Rangkasbitung

Teachers’ talk is a factor that may entail to the smoothness of English teaching and learning experience. Besides, language used by teacher in the classroom is crucial, because it will influence students’ learning process and development. This study investigated the speech acts in the teacher talk at SMP Negeri 1 Rangkasbitung. This study involved the Seventh Grade English teacher of SMP Negeri 1 Rangkasbitung as the data source. Furthermore, this study used Searle’s theory of speech acts classification as the instrument for analyzing the data. Based on the analysis, there were only four types of speech acts found in the teacher talk, 68 % directive speech act, assertive speech acts with 14 %, and the last two of speech act, commissive and expressive speech act, were only 10 % and 8 % in the teacher talk during the teaching-learning process. Analyzing the Types of Speech Acts Used in Teaching-Learning Interaction

This qualitative study was aimed at analyzing the types of speech acts used in teaching-learning interaction. The participants of this study were one class of 10th grade students of SMAN 1 Bandar Lampung. In collecting the data, observation and audio-visual material were used. Then, descriptive analysis was used to analyze the speech acts used in teaching-learning interaction. The results of this study showed that the speech acts mostly used was directive speech acts. On the other hand, declarations speech acts was not used at all. In conclusion, since the role of the teacher is as an initiator and sustainer of the interaction in the classroom and regarding the opportunities for the full range of human interactions are limited which make the students get more difficulties in acquiring appropriate language use patterns, therefore, directives speech acts is appropriate, used in classroom interaction context to help the students to acquire the target language in the comprehension input...
This research aimed to explore the types, the functions, and the forms of speech acts uttered by the students on their EFL classroom communication, and to examine the students' perceptions on the use of speech act in an EFL classroom communication. This research employed descriptive qualitative method. The subjects and the respondents of this research were the students of English Department at the first and the third semester of SembilanBelas November University of Kolaka which were selected through conveniently selected sampling. The data of this research were collected by employing video recording and online survey. The obtained data was analyzed in three major phases namely data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The result of the research revealed five types of speech act uttered by the students in EFL classroom communication namely directive speech act, representative speech act, commisive speech act, declarative speech act, and expressive speech act. Furthermore, each type of the speech acts was uttered in different functions.

The research problems of this research is what are the types and functions of speech acts that appear in discussion activities on speaking learning of 3rd semester students of Polytechnic ATI Makassar. The methods in this research is a descriptive qualitative method. The subject of this research is the 3rd semester Politechnic ATI Makassar students in class discussion activities. The results of the study can be described as follows. There are several types of speech acts found. Based on the action objectives of the speaker's perspective, Locutionary act, Illocution act, and perlocutionary act are found. Locutionary speech acts include news, questions and orders. ABSTRACT This research is related to the pragmatics study, which analyzes language and focuses on meaning and language used based on contexts. In learning and using of any language especially English, we are strongly required to recognize and familiarize with the concepts of language use, context and language functions. Some linguists agree that speech acts and language function cannot be thoroughly separated from contexts especially from gender perspective. Consequently, speaking a language or using speech acts in the right context means to function language in the right function too. Furthermore, this study applied pragmatic identity method. This method is used to identify linguistic units according to the linguistic units and the effects which are uttered by the speakers. There were some findings of this study; firstly there were four types of speech acts used by the lecturers in the teaching and learning process. They were representatives, expressives, directives, and commissives. Secondly, there were 16 sub-categories of speech acts with total frequency 381. Particularly, a number of speech acts used by woman lecturer were 16 categories with total 301 speech acts. Man lecturer speech acts sub-categories compared to woman, there were only 9 categories performed by the man lecturer with the number of frequency was 80. Thirdly, woman lecturer pattern was (QEC) whereas CQE was pattern used by the man lecturer in speech acts viewed from gender perspectives. Finally, the researcher found that QEC and CQE have done by their own reasons. Theoretically, CQE pattern is strongly suggested to be used because it is related to the scientific approach that is discovery learning which stimulates the students to observe, question, associate, experiment, and then communicate.
