Abstract
A specific pattern that we call “hypercorrection” can be observed through systematic observation of the interactions between patients and caretakers in a psychiatric institution. This concept establishes a new “map” to describe interactions, which could appear as being “paradoxical” but proved to be of another nature. This map has the advantage of clarifying these difficult situations in which the so-called “first line caretakers” feel stuck between contradictory expectations. In the case of hypercorrection, both terms of the injunction occur at different moments of the cycle of the request, whereas in the case of double binds, both terms of the injunction occur at the same time. More generally, this study suggests that clinical work in an institution is less about looking at the “patient” than about observing how this patient interacts with the caretakers and how they negotiate their place in the institution.
