The Philosophy of Fantastic: Theoretical and Practical Features of the Academic Discipline (original) (raw)

The article outlines the current state of science fiction and fantasy research in the philosophical context in universities and institutions in the United States, Western Europe, and other countries. We can observe a dynamic interest in philosophical ideas in popular culture not only in a wide audience but also in academic scholars on the demonstrated examples. We also see an increase in the number of various publications (monographs, collective works, magazines), which are dedicated to fantastic fiction as the latest form of reflection of civilization's processes. The philosophy of fantastic is defined as a scientific discipline and educational platform for participants who want to get acquainted with the principles of philosophical thinking. The concept of the philosophy of fantastic provides interactive dynamics in the education, offering different formats of interaction between teacher and participants, regardless of previous educational level and specialization. The combination of philosophical methodology as an operator and imaginative, artistic form of science fiction and fantasy provides a foundation for intensive mastering of key issues that underlie the life of modern people. Conceptually, there are opportunities to combine their own phenomenological experience with the experience of other cultural actors, in this case – the participants of the course. The defining features of the academic discipline are the flexibility of the structure, increased attention to perceptual experience, and the identification of basic thinking experiments used in the course's relevant topic. The experience of teaching the Philosophy of Fantastic in the university education system demonstrates opportunities for the development of philosophical reflection, the ability to identify key problems and issues, to interact with other course participants, and skills to determine their position in the essay and by reviewing creative works of the colleagues.
