Leading Internationalization—A Handbook for International Education Leaders (Note 1) (original) (raw)

Journal of Studies in International Education

The concept of internationalization has been seen as a buzz word and container concept. The meaning of internationalization includes everything that relates to international, meanwhile internationalization is losing its meaning. This study takes a practical approach to searching for some clarification of this concept. During the period 2009-2011, 73 key actors in the field of internationalization at 16 Dutch higher education institutions (HEIs) were interviewed. Among the 14 elements identified by this study as constituting the concept of internationalization, many may be commonly known. However, the value of this study is that it ranks their significance and provides a sound base for further comparative studies in other countries. Moreover, this study compares and contrasts the differing interpretations of what the pursuit of internationalization means in research universities and universities of applied sciences and concludes that internationalization is pursued differently in the two sectors and clarifies the cause of these differences. These sectoral differences are important but have so far been rarely acknowledged in the internationalization literature. Finally, knowledge about practitioners' perceptions of internationalization is not widely available in the education literature on internationalization. This study provides this knowledge based on the Dutch situation and argues that the current trend of theoretical development and general conceptualization in this field needs to recognize the actual practices, if our aim is to produce meaningful and feasible models/guidelines/frameworks that are recognizable by the practitioners.

Recently, the internationalization of higher education has been one of the topics on the agenda of researchers and representatives of educational institutions. Thus, I also approached this aspect in my research for my doctoral thesis. In the context of internationalization, education is considered a “strategic partner” that can decisively influence the development of the national economy. Globalization is seen as a continuous process, characterized by the particularities like the development of foreign investments, the amplification of export activities and the development of strategic alliances at the int...

–This study intended to describe the institutional initiatives of the selected Higher Education Institutions " (HEIs) key informants in preparation for the internationalization of education. Further, it would provide insights and baseline data to HEIs in line with implementation of this academic endeavour. In-depth interviews were conducted to the key informants such as university presidents, deans, department chairs for pertinent data collection. Aside from in-depth interviews, researchers " observations and naturalistic inquiries served as instruments for data gathering. Further, documents such as articles and newspaper clips served as additional sources of data. Triangulation was used in the study to cross-check the researchers " observations, key informants " interview responses and articles/documents from newspaper clippings. Findings indicated that there were some HEI administrators who were proactive, reactive and passive towards internationalization of education. Among the three core functions of HEIs, instruction had relatively more international initiatives to include invitations of resource speakers on current trends and pedagogies, faculty and student mobility and curriculum realignment based on international frameworks. Research initiatives were geared towards international publication, capability building and involvement in international conferences and fora for some faculty researchers. On community service, HEIs' initiatives were yet into local community service but slowly building up partnerships through international linkages.
