Ethics in Management Ethical Leadership and Culture
Recently, ethics is one of the fundamental issues that companies had to pay attention to because of global economic crises, corporate scandals, and rising importance of environmental concerns. Furthermore, scarcity of resources forced companies to think about sustainability within ethical issues. Devastating effects of the problems that companies dealing with have some consequences at the last instance. Ethics in management is becoming an ascending subject with all stakeholders, from a single customer to governmental practices. In this chapter, ethics in management will be discussed with its theoretical development, relation with organizational culture, and leadership.
Ethics in Management and Institutionalization of Ethics
Throughout world economies, place and role of government and public sector have weakened over time, and on the other hand, efficiency, function, and responsibility of the business world and private sector have increased on the global market system. In addition, changing and developing socio-cultural structure has increased social sensitivity stakeholders' consciousness and importance given to ethic values due to increasing social necessities. Ethics turned out to be one of the most important management subjects for entities and governors in the business world. Ethical performance and ethical quality of enterprises are also important for social responsibility towards all stakeholders, enterprises' ethical values, reputation of the enterprise, increasing brand value of goods produced or service provided, providing trust and support of investors, customers, and the public. In this context, ethics, managerial ethics, institutionalization of ethics, and importance of ethical principles in enterprises in terms of corporate managerial principles are evaluated in this chapter.

The discussion is based on the idea of having ethics in management that is necessary for both components (ethics and management) to work together and bring conceivability in the business i.e. what measures have been taken to hold together? Business ethics is a highly discussed and debated subject in today's corporate and business world, as well as in educational and academic circles. There are certain parameters, which influence the extensive level and degree to which ethics has been analyzed by scholars and researchers in recent years, such as globalization, technology, intangible assets, talent management. Meanwhile, organizations that are inclined in performing according to ethical standards, morals, and values, have recognized the importance and significance that ethical procedures and policies are communicated and practiced throughout the entire organization, while at the same time becoming a priority for the administration of the organization. Organizational and educational leadership is responsible for practices such as creating the foundations for the resourceful and ethical performance of the business. It is one of the most powerful and important aspects of human activities in organizations. Given that leaders are the most influential body in any institution greatly impacting the organizational culture, they are the ones who ought to promote and model principles and values in accordance to the objectives, mission, and vision shared with employees. Although ethos as a principle and value was first discussed in the ancient Greek philosophic circles, where it was characterizing the virtuous and moral beliefs, attitudes, and acts, the importance of the principle of ethical behavior had not been "apparent" until recent years that individuals and organizations have been researching to find ways that ethical behavior can be integrated into corporate practices. Moreover, ethics and the notion of ethical behavior and value systems in the organizational setting have become an organizational precedence in the 21stcentury. While leaders have numerous external factors, which present opportunities and threats, such as keeping up with the technology advancements, globalization's outcomes, threats of the competition, they also have to keep up with internal tasks and practices such as the alignment of mission, vision with the organizational culture, the strategies designed and the goals pursued for their own organization. Although the role of a leader is a complex and multifaceted one, he/she must also integrate ethical practices in their organizations' policies.

The problems of ethical values represent a subject that is present so often in the theoretical studies on business management, but it is treated with insufficient attention at the level of business community. The paper talks about the managerial ethics trough the perspective of the approach as a significant factor in achieving a consistent and long term success in business. By pleading for the necessity of developing authentic moral values in the business management and motivating this must by bringing arguments from the managerial practice, the paper insists on the fact that the observance of the moral values that are universally recognised sustain and consolidate the company's reputation, giving it stability and safety, making it trust worthy in the environment it acts in.

This ebook is the extension of another ebook Cases for Development ofEnvironmental and Ethical Competence, published by Viinius University in 2010 (ISBN: 978-9955-33-610-5) when carrying out the networking project Development of Environmental and Ethical Competence in Leadership and Management (project website: decom.vulchf.lt), funded by Nordplus Framework Programme in 2009-2010. The project was prompted by a need to highlight sustainability and accountability m business education curricula. Thus, the project partners from Estonian Business School, Norwegian School of Management BI, the University of Jyväskylä, Viinius University (the coordinator) and from 2010 Hanken School of Economics aimed to develop a curriculum that addresses management of environmental and ethical responsibilities of business and, in this way, contributes to raising business professionais' awareness of potential business risks as well as business opportunities opened by responsible behaviour. Another objective of the project was to highiight a socio-cultural perspective of decision-making and behaviours of the Nordic-Baltic societies in the cases which are presented in this publication. This ebook contains "old" and new case studies, yet with introductory chapters, which makes it possible to use it as a textbook. Some "old" cases in this edition were amended after their trial in an intensive course Cases in OrganizationalEthics in 2011. The partners then agreed to write introductory chapters to the topics that their cases cover. This version of the leaming material will be used in the same-titled intensive course in the forthcoming years in the partner universities. Jn the year 2012, the project on Development ofMoral Competence in Leadership and Management that focuses on an intensive programme alone was initiated with new competences and fresh outlooks from business ethics professionals from Tampere University and Riga International School of Economics and Business. The cases therein are meant for intermediate or advanced level students in management and leadership. However, wider use of the cases in other degree programmes is welcome. The cases address four issues that can he met in today's business world, namely, gendered practices in organizations, ethical leadership, impiementation of environmental standards and corporate volunteering. The cases have general and case-specific questions to be answered either alone by the student, after doing the required (also recommended) reading or / and in groups, when discussing implications of the issues described in the cases to organization management. Some of the organizations under scrutiny are fiction; some are real, yet, for the purposes of discussion of administrative and managerial issues are kept anonymous. The case of Swedbank in Lithuania invites participants to explore factual activities of this bank in the (course) participants' countries. This edition is a resuit of contribution provided by the participant organizations of the project. Thanks go to the authors of this edition who patiently waited for its publication in a new electronic format. Ali of them contributed their time, pedagogical experience and knowledge ofbusiness.
