Stress, sources of stress and coping during the Covid-19 lockdown: A population study from India

Background: Pandemics such as COVID-19 (with or without lockdown) can cause considerable stress to individuals, testing their coping resources. To contain the pandemic, there was a nationwide lockdown in India from March 25, 2020, severely limiting movement of the 1.3 billion population till the first relaxation came on April 21. This study was done in the 3rd week of April, just before relaxations were announced, to study the perceived stress, sources of stress, and coping strategies of adults during this core lockdown period in Kerala, India. Materials and Methods: We gathered data from 1073 adults using sociodemographic information, perceived stress scale, sources of stress checklist, and COVID-19 coping strategies scale. Psychological Impact of COVID 19 on the Amount of Perceived Stress among College Students Studying across Various Streams in India during the Period of Lockdown

BACKGROUND Humans have evolved and adapted as a social being and it has ensured the survival of all. The novel corona virus, COVID 19 has impacted the psychosocial functioning of billions of people around the world. The various impacts it might have on different categories of people over a period of time is one of the main concerns of the World Health Organisation. College students are vulnerable and are more prone to psychological problems due to the prolonged stress experienced by them during this period of uncertainty and social isolation. We wanted to analyse the level of perceived stress among college students in India and the impact of this sudden break in studies and social distancing has on them. We also wanted to study the number of mental setbacks the college students experience because of their financial situation and their future job prospects during this lockdown. METHODS An online survey was conducted among the college students in India. A total of 775 responses were analysed for the level of perceived stress using the perceived stress scale. The psychological impact caused by the lockdown was analysed through statements regarding the amount of worry they felt across various aspects of their life such as economic stability, missing friends during lockdown, use of mobile phone for connecting with people, continuation of education and impact of Covid 19 on future job prospects. RESULTS College students were experiencing significant amount of stress as measured by the perceived stress (PS) scale with 11.5 % experiencing high stress and 81.2 % students experiencing moderate amount of stress. The perceived stress was found to be significantly associated with worry regarding education, job prospects being affected by the Covid 19 situation and the reduction of time spent with their peers. CONCLUSIONS College students are experiencing moderate to high level of stress in the context of the pandemic situation and preventive and protective measures have to be taken by the college administration to address these issues. More targeted assessments needs to be done in colleges to assess the mental health of its student population and protective measures like counselling services should be made to vulnerable students as they try to handle the stress associated with the current pandemic situation.

COVID-19: the psychological impact and coping strategies among youth during lockdown in India: the role of education

Background: COVID-19 is a biological disaster and its impact on the psychological wellbeing among individuals in the society. It affected all age group in the society and the youth are more vulnerable in the pandemic. The aim of the study was to understand the stress, anxiety, depression level and coping strategies among youth during the early stage of lockdown period in India.Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study and 302 youth across India were respond ended through snowball sampling method. Depression, Anxiety and Stress Among Indians in Times of Covid-19 Lockdown

Covid-19 has caused significant distress around the globe. Apart from the evident physical symptoms in infected cases, it has caused serious damage to public mental health. India, like other countries, implemented a nationwide lockdown to contain and curb the transmission of the virus. The current research is an attempt to explore psychological distress among people residing in India during the lockdown. Four hundred and three participants were asked to complete a questionnaire with questions around symptoms of depression, anxiety, stress, and family affluence. The results indicated that people who do not have enough supplies to sustain the lockdown were most affected, and family affluence was found to be negatively correlated with stress, anxiety, and depression. Among different professions, students and healthcare professionals were found to experience stress, anxiety, and depression more than others. Despite the current situation, stress, anxiety, and depression were found to be in normal ranges for mental health professionals highlighting their capabilities to remain normal in times of distress. Policymakers and other authorities may take the assistance of mental health professionals to help overcome psychological issues related to Covid-19.

Psychological effects of lockdown during COVID-19 in population of Gujarat and mitigating factors for it: A survey

Background: Recently, billion of people in the world are suffering from some kind of lockdown or quarantine due to COVID-19 infection. People who are lockdown or quarantine are very likely to develop a wide range of symptoms of psychological stress and disorders like stress, anxiety, anger, insomnia, low mood, irritability, depression, emotional exhaustion and post traumatic stress symptoms. Methods: A cross sectional survey was conducted within the duration of March 2020-April 2020 by using qualitative research approach and surveying demographics, symptoms, knowledge, concerns, and precautionary measures regarding psychological effects against COVID-19 lockdown. Among the 1000 people were included in study from Gujarat, the respondents (n=266) showed interest in the study. Results and Discussion: Among the participants 60.89% people shows angriness, 73.7% believe that their work efficiency is reduced or decreased, 39.5% people believe that their family income reduced or disturbed, more than half people means 54.9% people have increased their different types of negative thoughts during lockdown. The 49.6% people are using electronic media and internet, 43.2% people spend their time by reading and doing their favorite hobbies as a mitigating factors against psychological effects. Conclusion: During the phase of lockdown in Gujarat, India, people are suffering from varies psychological effects regarding work efficiency, family income, negative thoughts due to stress and anxiety and angriness. We identified various factors that might help in safeguarding the psychological effect. Key message: To survey the psychological effects on people and mitigating factors for it in Gujarat during the lockdown of COVID-19 outbreak is helpful to stable the mindset of people and creating strong positive atmosphere against the fight of pandemic COVID-19

The psychological impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and associated risk factors during the initial stage among the general population in India

Background: In the absence of treatment and unclear prognosis, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) itself, and public health measures like lockdown enforced by the government to limit the spread of the virus poses a threat to the psychological health of the general population. Aim: To assess the psychological status of the Indian population during the initial phase of lockdown. Method: It was a cross-sectional online survey where the questionnaire was disbursed by snowballing. The link to the survey was shared in different social networking platforms between 6th and 22nd of April 2020. The questionnaire collected responses related to the sociodemographic variables, exposure history, precautionary measures used, and the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21) score. Results: A total of 541 participants responded to the questionnaire. Only 422 respondents' responses from 23 states of India who completed the questionnaire were included for assessment. The mean age of the participants was 30.5 (SD=10.9) years. Female constituted 60.4% (n=255) of the respondents. The pre-existing medical illness that the respondents had were diabetes mellitus, four per cent (n=17), hypertension, five per cent (n=21), thyroid dysfunction, nine per cent (n=38), and mental illness, five per cent (n=21). The median (IQR) of the DASS-21 item scale was found to be 16 (4-32). The percentage of the respondents who reported stress was 35.5% (n=149), anxiety, 32% (n=135), and depression, 34.7% (n=146). Respondents with sociodemographic variables like being single, student status, competed education till graduation, homemakers, working in public sector, and history of mental illness were more likely to experience stress, anxiety, and depression. A majority of the respondents were practicing hand hygiene and social distancing. Respondents who were unaware of their exposure status were more likely to have depression. Conclusion: The Indian population is experiencing the psychological impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which may increase with the spread of the infection. India needs to gear up to face mental health consequences. People with a pre-existing physical and psychological illness needs extra care and precaution to prevent any relapse or development of complications.

Covid-19 related psychological manifestation during lockdown among India's working professionals: An online survey

Background: The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has expanded globally, causing enormous physical, psychosocial, and economical harm to individuals all over the world. COVID-19 has a significant psychological influence on the general population, according to existing literature. Aim: The study aimed to document the psychological manifestation due to COVID-19 lockdown, and evaluate the impact on working population of India. Methods: It was a cross-sectional study, using a pre-tested, designed, web-based Google Forms questionnaire, using snowball sampling to collect on socio-demographic and clinical parameters related to COVID-19 lockdown, with working professionals who were invited to participate.
