ON ARCHITECTURE — CHALLENGES IN DESIGN Proceedings, 2023
The text problematizes pedagogical methodologies in education in the field of Applied Art and Design, through the connection with fields of Architecture and Urbanism. As a link, a common subfield, urban design is recognized as a framework for connecting scientific and artistic methods, through the need to develop new methods and techniques of professional production of space that are able to generate multi-layered and sustainable solutions within specific social, economic and institutional circumstances. An integral approach implies combining the creative potential of urban design with a more socially conscious and responsible approach in order to develop more efficient techniques through dealing with the concrete space and urban problems in Kragujevac. The complex methodology that follows this approach integrates experiences from the domain of architecture and urban projects, emphasizing the importance of the research dimension in planning a space with a unique identity and a specific atmosphere, whether it is urban planning, architecture or interior design. The paper shows the applied experimental pedagogical approach implemented in the 2020/2021 school year of Master's academic studies at the Interior Architecture study program at the Faculty of Arts and Philology, University of Kragujevac. The pedagogical approach and the proposed student projects are not based only on problem solving, but on a research-oriented approach, which explores the possibilities and limitations of the development of urban units, by training students for their evaluation, which enables a better understanding of the local context, which leads to the adaptation of work methods and creation of more adequate proposals for interventions.
Transdisciplinary Methodology of an Architectural and Urban Discourse in Higher Education
The chapter includes identification of the need for reconceptualization of architectural and urbanistic discourse in higher education and the definition of the transdisciplinary methodology for a sustainable development of the living environment. Architecture and urbanism as complex disciplines that start from the existential social needs and reach to the most complex challenges and aspirations involve complex approaches and complex relations. Professional educational environment from architecture and urbanism aspect is integral. It includes the study of forms and models of urban space planning to architectural structures, details, materials, environmental challenges, as well as new paradigms of shaping life and work in the community. This requires the involvement of various disciplines and forms of knowledge for forming a competent and productive response to modern challenges of the real world. With the development and adoption of transdisciplinary methodology in environmental higher education, a platform can be developed for sustainable urban development in a sustainable social community. Technological aspect has a central role in that process.

Comparing the curricula of various teaching areas, our goal was to provide an overview of the existing themes and concepts related to architecture and urbanism being taught, as well as the context in which students are introduced to them. Also, we were interested in the outcome of the existing approach to these topics, i.e., we wanted to find out what knowledge and competences were acquired by students. An urban oriented and multilayered experience on architectural education in (the global world)
Conventional education has come to be discussed in a formation of global world in which borders between professions become obscure by stratification of intelligence and their interests intersect with each other. Rapid renewal of knowledge and the help of communication facilities for the produced information to be shared instantly recognized an order of life that professionals live in a lifelong education and development. Architecture is fed by the accumulation of knowledge from many disciplines due to the nature of itself. The most important subject in architectural education for the students is to be fed up by these interests and to have the ability (skill) to produce correct relationship between these fields in planning and design and to produce decisions. From that point of view, several diploma projects was held in a number of selected fields with different variables in corporations with local governments at Yıldız Technical University, Faculty of Architecture between the years of 2004 to 2009. In the scope of the studies, Interdisciplinary research, analytical approach, synthesis, planning and design process based studies were carried out at 6 different studios in which organizational structure and fieldworks were determined with the local governments. According to the studios, Architectural and planning-oriented, but in sociology, psychology, economics, environmental science, archaeology, art history feeding project was carried out in different areas at the same time. Project process and outputs were assessed with predetermined evaluation criteria in juries (exams) with the participation of local governments. The project studies, processes and outputs over the results were evaluated and interpreted in the paper.
Development Strategy Of The Montenegro Urbanism In The 21St Century Transdisciplinary Engagement

This paper examines the role and the place of transdisciplinarity in the urbanism of the 21st century, with the emphasis on Montenegro urbanism. Global processes require a systematic strategy and systemic synergistic engagement in the development of cities in 21st centuries. Urbanism as a profession and a discipline should be developed parallel and in correlation, based on the principles of integrality and communication skills, in order to enable development of the sustainable urban system. The importance of integrated urbanism and other disciplines are also emphasized as well as their synergies activities. The paper also presents the positive examples of urban theory and practice in the world, which influenced the direction of development of the modern urbanism. The chapter presents a case study based on transdisciplinary research, which was conducted at the Faculty of Architecture in Podgorica and is an innovation in architectural and urban practice of higher education in Montenegro. The study is based on the view that autonomous action of disciplines in the case of architecture and urbanism as multidisciplinary activities is limited, and an integrated approach to solving complex problems in the urban system is required. A global approach to research and solving urban issues is an important actor of sustainable development, where universities are central in this process. Collaborative educational discourses with a high degree of cooperation can develop an adequate platform for responses to the complex issues of the urban system. Producing experts with a developed awareness of a comprehensive understanding of the problem and transdisciplinary collaborative knowledge can strongly contribute to sustainable improvement, control, and management of urban spaces.

Seminar 1: Building Migrant Cities in the Gulf: Paradoxes and Realities Building Migrant Cities in the Gulf offers a comprehensive analysis carried out to reveal the various complex layers of contemporary urbanism in the world’s biggest urban growth scenario rooted in foreign migration. Within real estate markets housing has become the top commodity and thus a main factor of economic growth in all Gulf cities. The direct interdependency of economic growth and housing has led to the paradox of increasing land prices and the resulting lack of affordable housing and growing challenges for future growth built on continuously exchanging migrant societies. Today, Gulf cities are expressions of controversies: vacant mega projects and crowded high-density agglomerations; themed spectacles and monotonous built environments; continuous urban sprawl and intense high-rise conglomerates and rapid internationalization and traditional conservatism. All these internal factors and external influences represent tensions that have led to highly fragile entities. These identify housing development as the most crucial element keeping Gulf cities alive or eventually leading to exacerbating these tensions if not comprehensively considered from an integrated perspective of sustainable urbanism. Following ontological and epistemological interpretations, the adopted methodology involves conceptual and critical analysis which is based on reviewing and categorising classical literature and more than hundred contributions in architectural and design research developed over the past five decades which were classified under the perspectives of inquiry and frames of reference. Postulated through three philosophical positions – positivism, anti-positivism and emancipationist – six frames of reference were identified: systematic, computational, managerial, psychological, person–environment type-A and person–environment type-B. Technically oriented research and conceptually driven research were categorised as the perspectives of inquiry and were scrutinised together with their developmental aspects. By mapping the philosophical positions to the frames of reference, various characteristics and spheres of inquiry within each frame of reference were revealed. Further detailed examples can be developed to offer discerning elucidations relevant to each frame of reference. The content of the presentation is viewed as an enabling mechanism for researchers to identify the unique particularities of their research and the way in which it is pursued. In this seminar, design education is dealt with as a paradigm whose evolutionary processes, underpinning theories, contents, methods, tools, are questioned and critically examined. The seminar features a comprehensive discussion on design education with a focus on the design studio as the backbone of that education and the main forum for creative exploration and interaction, and for knowledge acquisition, assimilation, and reproduction. Through international and regional surveys, the striking qualities of design pedagogy, contemporary professional challenges and the associated sociocultural and environmental needs are identified. Building on twenty-five years of research and explorations into design pedagogy in architecture and urban design, this seminar authoritatively offers a critical analysis of a continuously evolving profession, its associated societal processes and the way in which design education reacts to their demands. Matters that pertain to traditional pedagogy, its characteristics and the reactions developed against it in the form of pioneering alternative studio teaching practices. Advances in design approaches and methods are debated including critical inquiry, empirical making, process-based learning, and Community Design, Design-Build, and Live Project Studios. Lessons learned from techniques and mechanisms for accommodation, adaptation, and implementation of a ‘trans-critical’ pedagogy in education are conceived to invigorate a new student-centered, evidence-based design culture sheltered in a wide variety of learning settings in architecture and beyond. A large part of the capital, both financial and natural, is being invested in modern construction. The role of construction and architecture in creating conditions for sustainable development as industries involved in shaping this space is extremely important. Harmonization of architecture with the environment was and remains an important component of urban planning and architectural design. The purpose of this study is to highlight the theoretical and methodological foundations as well as practical solutions (based on the examples of students’ works at architectural universities in Ukraine and Poland) regarding the formation of a sustainable architectural environment. The research is based on a systemic approach, which allows considering the architectural environment as a hierarchically arranged functional and spatial integrity. The methods of modeling, historical, comparative, and typological analysis and field surveys were widely used. Due to the lack of complex theoretical and methodological workings in this field, the scientific novelty of the article consists of a systematic approach to the formation of a theoretical and methodological basis for designing a sustainable architectural environment. This research was conducted at different levels of spatial integrity. The article considers the concept of the formation of a balanced architectural and urban environment. Theoretical and methodological foundations of designing at different hierarchical levels of its spatial integrity (city, building, interior) are outlined. Attention is paid to the problem and methods for assessing the balance and environmental efficiency of architecture. Standards in balanced design and modern interior design trends using innovative ecological building materials are also considered.
Innovations of architectural studies at Kaunas University of Technology

During the last decade in the context of the desired results of architectural studies described in European directive 2013/55/EU the following problems and challenges in the field of learning quality at KTU could be observed: the lack of study process flexibility; the lack of students' ability to integrate knowledge gained from different study subjects; the lack of analytical and communication skills, etc. Having in mind three basic elements, like systematicity, integrity, and flexibility, we are gradually improving architectural studies by trying to integrate related study subjects and put stronger emphasis on architectural design and urban planning study modules; to develop study results which are directly related with the precise skills necessary for architect; to seek for the new study methods, etc. We also state that even small improvements of the study methods can lead to the efficient solution of these problems. Our solutions are unusual and innovative in the context of East European traditional learning of architecture. The aim of the paper is to review the experience of solving the mentioned problems in KTU by improving study aims, results, methods, and curriculum of the first cycle study program.
