Comparison of Self-Esteem Among First to Fourth Year Nursing Students From Universities of Medical Sciences in Tehran

Background: Self-esteem plays a critical role in promoting mental health and affects performance, development patterns, interaction with others and the mental health. Accordingly, improving the self-esteem of students, as future builders of the community, is very important. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine and compare the self-esteem of nursing students in grades one to four of medical universities in Tehran. Materials and Methods: In this analytical cross-sectional study, 400 students of the medical universities in Tehran were selected, using stratified sampling with proportional allocation. They filled a demographic information form and Coopersmith Self-esteem Inventory. Data for this study were collected during a semester in 2010. Results: The results showed that the overall mean score of self-esteem (P = 0.3), and personal (P = 0.3), social (P = 0.5), parental self-esteem (P = 0.5) in the first and fourth year students did not differ statistically. The first and fourth year students presented the highest levels of social self-esteem. Fourth year students showed the highest academic and parental self-esteem compared to students in other academic years. In addition, the variables of grade point average (P = 0.02), residence (P = 0.003), family economic status (P = 0.001) and marital status (P = 0.04) had a statistically significant influence on students' self-esteem. Conclusions: Given the undeniable relationship between self-esteem and interpersonal ability to interact, as an inseparable component of effective care process, assessing and identifying factors associated with nursing students is a valuable step in improving the quality of nursing care provided in a future career of this major segment of the community.

A Study to Assess the Effectiveness of Bundle of Intervention Package on Level of Self Esteem among Final Year Nursing Students in Selected College

A quantitative research approach with one group pre-test post-test design used for the study. 70 nursing students were considered as a sample after fulfillment of inclusive criteria. Purposive sampling technique was used. the data was analyzed by using both descriptive and inferential statistics on the basis of the objectives and hypothesis of the study.In pre-test (97.14%) of the students had low level of self-esteem.in pre-test 2.86% of the student had normal level of self-esteem.in post-test (100%) of the students had normal level of self-esteem the overall level The mean value of pre-test is 12.44.the mean value of post-test are 19.74.the SD of pre-test are 1.31.the SD of post-test are 2.42. Conclusion of the study finding, it can be concluded that intervention has found to be effective to improve the self-esteem among final year nursing students in significance gain in the level of self-esteem among students.

Stress and self-esteem among nursing students at private medical college, Chitwan

Background: Stress and self-esteem are common issues that everyone has to cope with at some time in their lives and they could also affect other things going on in a person’s’ life. The objective of the study is to identify the stress and self-esteem among nursing students. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out among B.Sc. Nursing students, Chitwan Medical College. The data was collected by us­ing structured questionnaire within 2 weeks. Obtained data were analyzed using IBM SPSS version 16.0. Descriptive statistics (mean, frequency, percentage and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (chi-square and correlation) were used for data analysis. Results: Out of 116 respondents, 23.3%, 25.9%, 25.9% and 25.0% were from first, second, third and fourth year respectively. More than half i.e. 50.9% of the respondents had high stress. A Study to Assess the Adjustment Problems Faced by the 1 st Yr Basic B. Sc. Nursing Students of Selected Colleges of Nursing in City

The aim of this study to assess the adjustment problems faced by the 1 st years Basic B. Sc. Nursing students. Material and Methods: The researched adopted the descriptive approach with Descriptive research design in which investigator evaluate the adjustment problems faced by the 1 st yr Basic B. sc. Nursing students of selected colleges of nursing in city. The sample size comprised of 207 1 st year Basic B. Sc nursing student who met the inclusion criteria. Data were collected Rating scale on adjustment problem faced by the 1 st years Basic B. sc. Nursing student. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. In that Chi-square test for association of adjustment problems with their demographic variables. Result: The results of this study showed that the majority of 99 (47.82%) having moderate level of adjustment problem followed by 63 (30.43%) has low level of adjustment problem and 45 (21.73%) has high level of adjustment problem. There is a positive correlation between the Academic adjustment V/s psychological adjustment (0.70), Academic adjustment v/s Economic Adjustment (0.61), Academic adjustment v/s Social adjustment (0.77), Psychological adjustment v/s Economic adjustment (0.47), psychological adjustment v/s social adjustment (0.64) and Economic adjustment v/s social adjustment (0.59). there was significant association between age, Religion, Type of family, Mothers education, Fathers education, Fathers occupation and place of residence and there was no significant association between, Gender, number of siblings, mother's occupation, monthly family income, is there anyone in nursing profession from your family and leisure time activity with the level of adjustment problems. Conclusion: The findings of the present study indicated that the 1 st year Basic. B. sc Nursing student having moderate level of adjustment problems.

Introduction: Going to a college can be a stressful event because it is vital point in the trajectory of development when an adolescent enters adulthood and is expected to be behaving and perform like an adult. Methods: Non-experimental Co-rrelational Comparative Design was used, 400 participants were selected by non-probability convenience sampling technique from Akal College of Nursing Baru Sahib (H.P.) and Eternal University Baru Sahib. Data was collected by using Beck Depression Inventory Scale, Rosenberg's Self Esteem Scale. Results: In depression, there was only significant association between the depressive symptoms among nursing students with age and education of father and among non-nursing students with age, occupation of father, occupation of mother, education of father, education of mother and with do you have any depressive symptoms in low self esteem, was no significant association between the low self esteem among nursing and non-nursing students with selected sociodemographic variables. Conclusion: The study's findings stated that the prevalence of depressive symptoms and low self esteem was more among the non-nursing students as comparison to nursing students.

Self-Esteem and Academic Stress among Nursing Students

Background Stress and self-esteem are common issues that everyone has to cope with at some time in their lives and they could also affect other things going on in a persons’ life. Academic stress is psychological condition often experienced by college students as, to some extent, being multidimensional variables. Among others are self-esteem and psychological well-being which are considered to have influences in explaining why college students experience stress. Objective The objective of this study was to assess the self-esteem level and academic stress among the nursing students. Method This is a cross-sectional study carried out in 2012. Total respondents were 190 nursing students selected randomly from Kathmandu University. Academic stress was assed using 30-item Scale for Assessing Academic Stress (SAAS) and Self esteem was assessed using 10 item Rosenberg’s Self-Esteem Scale. Information was collected through the self-administered questionnaire. The collected data was analyzed using SPSS version 16 software. Simple statistics measurement, percentage, means, correlation was used for the data analysis. Result This study shows mean age of the respondent’s was 20.44±2.67 years. Majority (88%) of students getting financial support of less than NRs 6000 per month and 64% have low perceived family support. This study found mean score of self esteem and academic stress was 11.9 and 18.4 respectively. Further nearly 78% students have low self esteem and 74% have high academic stress. Significant variable for high academic stress and low self esteem were lower the age, lower the education and low perceived family support. Lower financial support has also high academic stress. Conclusion Nursing students have low self esteem and high academic stress. Intervention to lower the academic stress and increase the self esteem should be carried out so that the learning of students will be efficient.

The Influence of Self-Esteem toward Self-Adjustment

This study aimed to identify the effect of self-esteem on students' self-adjustment. This correlational study Involved 210 tenthgrade students of SMA Negeri 1 Bangil Pasuruan, they were recruited using simple random sampling technique. Self-esteem and self-adjusment scales were deployed to collect the data. The data were analyzed using regression analysis. The result of the study showed that self-esteem significantly affected students' selfadjustment. Thus, guidance and counseling practitioners are recommended to provide a guidance and counseling service that considers self-esteem variable in order to enhance students' selfadjustment.

Educational Environment versus Nursing Students' Self- Esteem at Technical Institute of Nursing

Background: Nursing students in their educational environment develop more personal and social self-esteem. Aim: was to assess the relationship between educational environment and nursing students' self-esteem at the technical institute of nursing in Ain shams University. Design: a descriptive correlational design. Subjects: a sample of 268 students in first and second years. Tools: The data collected using two self-administered questionnaire sheets to assess students' selfesteem and their opinions regarding educational environment. Results: The study findings revealed that the nursing students in the study setting have high agreement upon poor educational environment regarding services and activities are provided by administration of institution (63.4%), relationship between students and institution administration (48.9%), the skills laboratories (45.5%), and classrooms (41.4%). The majority have moderate self-esteem (80.2%), which is not influenced by socio-demographic characteristics of nursing students. Conclusion: Agreement upon educational environment is correlated to nursing students' self-esteem. Recommendations: The study recommends that improvement the relationship between students and institution administration through periodic meeting to improve psychological environment and students' self-esteem.
