Digital Transformation of the Construction Industry: A Review

The construction industry is hailed as the driver for the economic development of every country to a great extent due to its dynamic nature, yet it needs digital transformation to align with the fast-paced digital world economy. Hence, to evaluate the potential for the digital transformation of various segments of the construction industry, a systematic review was conducted in this study. English research articles were extracted from the Scopus database by using keywords of "Digital Transformation" AND "Construction Industry" correlated to the engineering field. After a detailed screening process as per the PRISMA statement, only 26 articles were selected for further assessment from a total of 67 extracted articles. The extracted articles were focusing on digital technologies e.g., Building Information Modeling (BIM), Smart Devices, Internet of things (IoT), Drones, Project studio (PS), and digital twins and their implication in the digital transformation of the construction industry. It was evident that digital transformation enhanced the productivity and efficiency of construction projects with better control over cost, time, and risk throughout the project life cycle. Therefore, it is recommended to establish top management interest for digital partnering with trusted organizations enabling the realization of digital technologies in the construction industry.
Study of Challenges in Implementing Digital Transformation in Construction Projects

The main objective of this paper is to identify the challenges in implementing digital transformation in construction projects. Digital transformation is vital for construction projects due to its many benefits including increased productivity and an improved collaborative environment. A literature review was conducted to study the existing publications on digital transformation to identify the possible challenges and barriers that affect the construction industry transformation. Papers published from 2019 to 2021 were studied for this literature review with the objective of finding the latest knowledge on this topic. This paper identifies challenges and barriers in the construction sector as well as solutions to overcome the possible challenges. Digital transformation phases, processes and resources are discussed in this paper. This study also identified gaps and future research areas to obtain more accurate data regarding the challenges in digital transformation in construction projects.

This working paper offers an overview of year 1 of a long term digital transformation strategy of a small construction company (with global reach) in Scotland. The UK construction industry represents a significant part of the UK economy, with 343,000 construction businesses supporting 2.4million jobs in 2018 – 7% of the UK jobs total (Rhodes, 2019). Digital Transformation and E-Commerce in Construction Industry: A Prospective Assessment

The 2020 has been a challenging year, disrupting firms in all markets and leaving global instability. Digital adoption using e-commerce, automations needs to be adapted quickly especially in construction. The delay in adoption will make the construction industry lag behind other fields and will require revamping and huge investments to have a competitive level if delayed. It has been observed that Construction industry lacks in digital transformation and Ecommerce applications. Therefore, this paper evaluates the possible potentials of digital transformation and E-commerce in construction industry. A detailed literature review has been carried out to analyze the possible potentials, benefits and barriers of digital transformation and E-commerce in construction industry. It is concluded that with the application of Information Communication Technology (ICT) and other innovations, the overall productivity, efficiency and competitiveness will increase in construction industry. Digital transformation and E-Commerce applications facilitate the flow of work and collaboration at different organizational levels. For large and small companies, ICT and e-Business are essential for promoting incorporation and cooperation with business associates, vendors and consumers, as well as making electronic transactions. It provides consumers with support, helps produce and accept sales and orders at a fast level, lowers inventory time, costs and decreases obsolescence. Maintenance of the framework, stability and lack of software expertise are the few obstacles in the construction industry's use of E-Business. Application/Improvement: For the growth of e-Business in the building industry, collective and full collaboration is needed.

This study examined the perception of construction professionals and the extent of digital transformation in the Nigeria construction industry. A questionnaire survey was carried out where 84 copies of questionnaires containing information relating to digital technologies trends and transformation were randomly administered to the selected construction professionals in Anambra State Nigeria. 80 were completed, returned and found useful, thus, giving a response rate of 95.24%. Data collected were analysed and presented using mean, percentages, charts and relative importance index (RII). The study revealed that 69% and 12% of the professionals viewed digital transformation as opportunity and threat respectively, whereas; 19% viewed it as both threat and opportunity. It further revealed that 63% were satisfied with their firms' readiness to transform digitally. Barriers for Digital Transformation: The Role of Industry

Limited attention has been paid to why certain industries, like the AEC (Architectural, Engineering and Construction), is lagging behind in digital transformation. The question can be raised if there are characteristics on industry level that constrain digital transformation? The aim of the paper is to explore how the interactions among four industry key actors; architects, clients, contractors and consultants shape industry characteristics and the options for digital transformation through adoption and use of digital technology. The aim will be achieved through a combination of individual-and focus group interviews with representatives of the key actor groups focused on how they perceive Building Information Modelling (BIM). It is concluded that the characteristics of the industry; the focus on practical day-today action, a heterogeneous client side who have difficulties in putting demands on contractors and subcontractors due to lack of competencies, and a product that raise barriers for process innovations do effectively constrain digital transformation.
