The Effect of Fish Farming on Zooplankton Fauna in Kozan Dam Lake

Adıyaman University Journal of Science, 2020

The effect of aquaculture on water quality (Dissolved Oxygen, temperature, pH, conductivity, NO2-N, NO3-N, NH4-N, PO4-P and chlorophyll-a) and zooplankton fauna was investigated in Kozan Dam Lake. As a result of the study, it was determined that fish farming did not have a statistically effect on zooplankton fauna and water quality parameters, but it caused some minor changes. In the study, a total of 50 zooplankton species were identified, including 29 from rotifers, 15 from cladocerans and 6 from copepods and Asplanchna priodonta, Polyarthra dolichoptera, Bosmina longirostris Ceriodaphnia pulchella were found in both stations every month during the study. While the reference station had more species in January, February, March, April, May, June, August, October and November than in the cage station, more species were found in the cage station only in September and November than in the reference station. The annual zooplankton abundance was 3.118±3.927 ind/m 3 at the cage station and 2.552±2.452 ind/m 3 at the reference station. Rotifer species and abundance were higher at the cage station whereas cladocer and copepod species and abundance were higher at the reference station. In the study, the species found only in the cage station were Lecane bulla and Disparalona rostrata while the species found only in the reference station were Cephalodella gibba, Filinia terminalis and Macrothrix laticornis.

Determination of trophic situation of Sarimsakli Dam Lake (Kayseri-Turkey)

African Journal of Biotechnology, 2009

In this study, water samples were collected from four different stations in Sarımsaklı Dam Lake from May 2001 to June 2002 monthly to determine the trophic situation of lake. Additionally, physical parameters of water such as temperature, dissolved oxygen, electrical conductivity (EC), pH, light permeability were measured in the field and status of surface active substance, sulphur, nitrite, nitrate, total nitrogen, phosphate, total phosphate, oxygen saturation were analysed in Environment Ministry Reference Laboratory. Zooplankton samples were collected with a plankton net mesh size of 55 µm horizontally and vertically and they were fixed with 4% formaldehyde. The results of the light permeability, basic water quality parameters and dominant zooplankton species indicated that the lake studied was eutrophic. Furthermore, biotic index confirmed this result. The Lake examined in study area was partly polluted with different sources, because the study area is liable to human activities. If the pollution is not prevented, it may endanger the lives of living organisms here in future. Knowledge on the trophic situation of Sarımsaklı Dam Lake is not well established; so all of the zooplankton species determined are new records.

Influence of Trout Cage Culture on Water Quality, Plankton and Benthos in an Anatolian Dam Lake

2001

The effects of rainbow trout cage culture on water quality, phytoplankton, zooplankton and benthos were investigated in a cage farm of 30 ton capacity in Kesikkopru dam lake. Water temperature did not differ among stations while dissolved oxygen and pH values were slightly lower in the station with cages. Significant and insignificant increases were detected in concentrations of ammonia, nitrate, orthophosphate and chlorophyll a in the cage station. Also, the abundance of phytoplankton, zooplankton and benthos was highest in the cage station. The composition of phytoplankton was not fundamentally different among stations except for a higher abundance of Chlorophyceae and Cyanophyceae species in the cage station in November. The composition of zooplankton and benthos did not differ among stations; rotifers and gastropods were dominant, respectively.
