The Phenomenon Of Migration: A Linguistic And Sociological Perspective (original) (raw)

Neologisms Concerning Migration Processes: A Czech Example

Colloquium: New Philologies, 2019

In order to describe changes in the lexical system, M. Dokulil used the metaphor of a deep body of water. While down in the deep, nothing is happening, on the surface the water never stops to move, flow, circulate. In Dokulil's metaphor, the surface layer symbolises those lexical items closely related to social changes: new words and old words whose meaning has changed, or old words that have become elements of new words. The analysis of neologisms occurring during relevant social changes provides a valuable insight into the users' attitudes towards contemporary events. This paper deals with neologisms and neosemanticism concerning the migration processes that have taken place in Europe from 2011 to 2018. The neologisms are extracted from Neomat, the database for Czech neologisms. An analysis based on word formation and semantics, supported by papers in Neologizmy v dnešní češtině, is followed by an analysis from a sociolinguistic perspective, relying on the work of V. Dvořáčková, E. Mleziva and the theoretical frame given in the monography of V. Muhvić-Dimanovski. The focus of this article will be on those words which denote concepts related to the great migrations of our time. The productive formation by employing prefixes meaning pro or contra indicates a social urge to express polar attitudes on the subject. Due to the relevance of migration processes in a global context, lexical and semantical borrowing

Migration linguistics: A synopsis

2023

Migration, among the most important sociocultural phenomena of contemporary global societies, is complex, dynamic, and multifaceted. At the heart of migration is language, the indispensable agent of migration. Hence, in this article, a new sub-discipline of linguistics is presented, and that is 'migration linguistics'. It is the interdisciplinary and multidimensional study of the various aspects of language within the dynamic process of human mobility. And a linguistic theory of migration postulates that: (1) Language is an essential element in the migration process; (2) an individual's acquisition, learning, and use of language significantly changes as a result of migration; and (3) migrants must be understood in the languages they can use, taught the destination language, and provided basic and essential services understandable to them. The interdisciplinary nature of this new sub-discipline of linguistics is enriched by a variety of approaches and methodologies in solving issues relative to language in the context of migration.

Terminological Research Involved in a Pan-Latin Glossary on Migration

Annals of Constantin Brancusi University, Letters and Social Sciences Studies Series, 2023

The present article focuses on the research encompassed by creating a pan-Latin glossary on migration. The rationale for compiling a glossary on migration goes back to the period when, a student at European Master in Translation and Terminology Studies, in dealing with translating a text from Spanish into Romanian, I could not find a Romanian glossary on the subject-matter. Which determined me to harmonize a glossary on migration. According to M. T. Cabre, a glossary must be based on terms from a real text, they should not be created. Hence, to deal with the specialized list on migration, I laid my hands on a book,

New migration processes and new frontiers for linguistic research

Mari D'Agostino and Egle Mocciaro (Eds.), Languages and literacy in new migration. Research, Practice, and Policy. Selected papers from the 14th Annual Meeting of LESLLA (Literacy Education and Second Language Learning for Adults), 4th-6th October 2018, 2021

Recent migrations show unprecedented characteristics in terms of migratory routes, individual profiles of migrants and condition of isolation in arrival contexts. Combining sociolinguistic and linguistic perspectives, the article reconstructs the forms of linguistic contact between local and migrant populations in one of the main gateways to Europe, Palermo (Italy), and the specific conditions of local language acquisition by newcomers. It is argued that notions of (im)mobility and segregation must be included in migration-centred linguistic research.

Parallel and Comparable Corpora for Terminology Analysis in the Domain of Migration

Language for International Communication: Linking Interdisciplinary Perspectives: Language for Specific Purposes in the Era of Multilingualism and Technologies. Volume 4

The aim of the paper is to present the bilingual (English – Lithuanian) corpora compiled for research on specialised language in the domain of migration. The topic of migration is found to be one of the most significant themes for discussion recently. In 2021-2022, migration through the EU eastern borders increased considerably and obtained new dimensions as it was used for organizing hybrid attacks against EU states. Terminology of migration is of immense importance both for migrating people and politicians, officials and border officers dealing with the migration crisis. Corpus linguistics methods can enable analysing various aspects of migration terms and thus contribute to terminology management of this domain. Two types of bilingual corpora were compiled for the research: parallel and comparable. The parallel corpus was composed of international legal acts on migration issues: their original version in English and translations into Lithuanian. The parallel corpus includes the E...
