Role of Sports and Physical Education in the Promotion of Youth Social Values

The goal of this study is to see how physical education and sports might help young people develop social values. Physical education and sports are critical in instilling in young people the value of social values in their lives. The importance of association in educating both the mind and the body was studied in a review of the literature. Furthermore, it promotes social ideals among youth, allowing them to form social relationships with their peers. Furthermore, the advantages of physical education and sports might influence youth academic learning as well as physical exercise.

Examination of middle-school students’ physical education and sports course values in terms of several variables

This study aims to examine the 'values education' given in middle-school physical education and sports courses in terms of several variables. The research group consists of a total of 1600 students (795 female, and 805 male), studying in 16 central middle-schools (100 students from each school) affiliated to Tokat Provincial Directorate of National Education in 2018-2019 academic year. "Physical Education and Sports Course Value Scale" was used as a data collection tool. As data analysis in research; demographic variables were evaluated in frequency and percentage. Normality assumptions of the sub-dimensions were examined through the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. Mann-Whitney test was used in the analysis of categorical variables whose level of sub-dimensions was 2. Kruskal-Wallis test was used for variables with more than 2 levels. The level of significance is set at 0.05. Middle-school students' value mean scores for "Sports Culture" was determined as X = 13.4625, "Healthy Life and Nutrition" value mean score was X = 9.2056, "Solidarity" value mean score was X = 7.9425, "Respect" value mean score was X=12.8294, "National Culture and Unity" value mean score was X = 22.2819, and "Awareness" value mean score was X = 32.4688. Significant differences were determined between the students' value scores according to their gender, class, doing-not doing sports status, and family income levels. This study had determined that the students' value scores for physical education and sports course were high. It was observed that female students generally had higher value scores than male students, and their value scores decreased as their grade level increased. It has been determined that students who do sports have higher value scores compared to students who do not do sports, and as students' families income increases, their value scores also increase. According to the findings, it may be said that Physical Education and Sports Course has a very important and effective role in gaining values.

Analysis of basic value levels of sport high school and general high school students according to receiving physical education and sports courses

The aim of this study was to analyze basic value level of Anatolian Sport High School and General High School students according to their receiving Physical Education and Sports courses. As 296 girls and 324 boys from General High School and 84 boys and 49 girls from Anatolian High School students, totally 753 students participated in research. In order to collect data related to independent and dependent variables, “Personal Information Form” and “Portrait Values Scale” were applied to high school students. This research aims to determine the basic value levels of students for physical education and sports lessons and to examine them according to various variables. The research has been designed as a descriptive survey model. The universe of the research consists of the students studying at a Secondary School affiliated to the Istanbul Provincial Directorate of National Education. The sample group consists of a total of 908 students studying in Istanbul in the 2020-2021 academic year, who were determined by the purposeful sampling method. The vision of society can be influenced by the values young people hold regarding their way of life and physical well-being. Today, we are experiencing a crisis of these value preferences (Perényi, 2010). The aim of our study is to examine the effect of transferred sports values on the lifestyles of physically active and inactive students in light of the role of everyday physical education. Sociometric Status of Adolescents and Sport Orientation: Case Study

Being physically active and doing sports in adolescence is significant during regular education, as well as in free time. It contributes the most to socialization, development of cooperation and a healthy competitive spirit. The aim of this research is to determine the existence of a mutual connection between social status of adolescents and sport orientation with a case study of one class that achieves great results in school. The results of the research have shown that orientation towards sports and physical activities affects social status of students, that is, students chosen for joint activities in sports are also students who have positive sport preferences. Social status of students is conditioned by physical activity in P.E. lessons, as well as preferences towards group sports (p<0.01), whereas the importance of the idea of sport and the degree of doing sport activities in free time, is not linked to social status in class in terms of sport activities. With this, we conclude that school is an important factor in developing social competences of students.

Moral education is determined by the social phenomenon, which confers its content and represents a component of general education; it contributes to the formation and development of moral conscience and behaviour, to shaping the moral profile of the personality, and to the elaboration of social–moral behaviour. In many European countries, there are educational policies that promote the social and moral development of young people. According to the provisions of the National Curriculum currently into effect in our country, all the areas in the curriculum have the obligation of contributing to the social and moral development of young people. In this sense, researchers in the field pinpoint that physical education and sport - mostly physical education and sport teachers - have an important role in reaching this objective. Nonetheless, there is only scanty conclusive evidence to support this theory. In addition, scientists consider the social and moral field differently. Currently, there is too little information on the way in which physical education and sport teachers become aware of their responsibility in the social and moral development of the students through the discipline they teach. There is also insufficient information of the way they understand and apply the objectives of moral education.
