Issues and Challenges of Logistics in Malaysia: A Perspective
Malaysia’s progress on logistics has failed to keep pace with its growth in trade. Developing countries in this region are now catching up, so faster progress on logistics development will be crucial to sustaining Malaysia’s competitive advantages. High logistics costs in Malaysia derive from poor transport infrastructure, underdeveloped transport and logistics services and slow and costly bureaucratic procedures for dealing with both exported and imported goods. The balance among these three varies among countries in the region but in each country, a complementary approach to address all of them will be needed to produce a sustainable improvement in competitiveness.

stariuz.com
Rather than being viewed as a supportive industry to other functional areas previously, now, logistics has been regarded as a strategic industry on its own. In the Asia Pacific region, the potential for growth is very promising. Despite of the remarkable expansion of the industry; particularly in Malaysia, there has been very little published research in the area of logistics and supply chain resulting in a very limited dissemination of information for the purpose of coordination, learning, advancement and etc. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to examine the issues and challenges faced by the practitioners as well as the relevant parties involved in the industry. By reviewing the logistics and supply chain management literature in Malaysia followed by a preliminary interviews with five organisations from different sectors, this study found four key issues and problems, namely the operational logistics, service response logistics, information flow, and policy-related issues. These issues have been the hindrance for logistics effectiveness in Malaysia. This paper attempts to open up various issues surrounding this complex and fragmented industry. It thus, provided a base for future researchers to examine any aspects of logistics and supply chain management in Malaysia.

Malaysian Logistics Performance: A Manufacturer's Perspective
In the highly competitive economy, logistics performance measurement is a primary concern among practitioners and academia. The World Bank Logistics Performance Index (LPI) has produced the benchmark for more than 100 countries covering six main components that are related to the trade facilitation in the context of the logistics supply chain. However, the output of the index is based on logistics service providers, thus measuring the performance from the perspective of users , which does not only serve as a comparison study, but also remains as the ultimate study to prove the friendliness of logistics and trade facilitation involved in import and export processes. In the present work, six (6) components were used to assess logistics performance including environmental friendly. Results revealed that trade friendliness by the logistics services is improved and requires further analysis, according to the central hub of each sector in M alaysia. It attracts future development for the manufacturing industry by hav ing excellent logistics services facilities.

The successful of any tasks or jobs entrusted to logistics service providers is measured by performance. A good performance means the logistics service providers succeed in fulfilling customers' requirements and perceptions. Among customers' requirements are delivery of goods on-time, reasonable costs, the safety of their goods and so forth. However, nowadays this performance is being disturbed by road congestion problems due to the flooding of road logistics transportations which are used to deliver products or goods to their customers, together with the addition of public road transportation. As a result, the delivery of customers' goods is delayed and the operation costs also increased. This hustle and bustle happens since the global manufacturing sector grows dramatically these days. Consignees do not agree with several solutions to this issue, since it is found to be favouring the customers, without any concern to the consignees themselves. Hence, this study adapted several previous models in order to come out with a new model which can prevent delivery delay and reduce operation cost. This is a promise for an effective and efficient logistics service providers' performance. With regards to the prior literature, the capability of logistics service providers is very valuable to maintain the good performance of a logistics firm, IT implementation is empirically proven as an enabler for time and cost saving, and innovation capability is important in differentiating one firm to another. Hence, it can sustain the competitive performance and advantages. Therefore, the formation of the mentioned variables has constructed a new model for this study which is expected to benefit logistics service providers to improve their services and simultaneously provide a nice picture to potential investors to invest in our country, Malaysia.
