Abstract

The article critically evaluates previous approaches in the rather new field of Taiwan Studies. Being a meta-analysis, it points out both thematic concerns and methodological approaches of the past 20 years of its existence. It emphasize the theme of Taiwan subjectivity to be a momentum for both Taiwan independence processes in the 1990s and Taiwan studies, which subsequently aroused to analyse these processes. The paper also sets the articles presented in the special issue within this paradigm, it critically evaluates them and emphasize the new perspectives that the articles present.
