Income Risk and the Decision on Onion Farming
SOCA: Jurnal Sosial, Ekonomi Pertanian
The onion cultivation often faced various risks caused by many factors, so farmers need to make the right decision to start onion cultivation by paying attention to these risks. Therefore, this research was conducted with the aim of 1) analyzing the income risk faced by farmers in developing onion farming, 2) knowing the factors that affect the farming risk, 3) knowing the factors that influence farmers' decisions in planting onion. The research was conducted in Purworejo Village for 4 months with 30 onion farmers as the sample. To analyze the income risk faced by farmers in developing onion farming, it was done by calculating the coefficient of variation (CV). Minimum income was calculated by the residual formula of the squared income function and to determine the factors that influence farming income and farmers' decisions in planting onion, multiple linear regression analysis was performed. The research showed that the risk of onion farming income was quite high, reached ...

E3S Web of Conferences
The research was carried out with the aim to find out the behavior of farmers towards risk and the factors that influence it. The research sample was 100 paddy farmers in flood-prone area paddy fields in Pangandaran District, West Java Province, Indonesia. Farmer’s behavior towards risk was analyzed using quadratic utility functions, while the factors that influence farmer’s behavior towards risk were analyzed using logistic regression. The results showed farmers 87 was risk neutral, while 13 farmer risk takers were farmers. Education, familys size and income significantly influence farmer’s behavior towards risk; while age, experience, land area, production risk, price risk, income risk and group did not significantly influence farmer’s behavior towards risk.
An Empirical Study on to Identify the Factors Which Related to the Farmer’s Risk Behavior: An Exploratory Factor Analysis, 2021
Risk denotes a situation in which the probabilities are known, whereas uncertainty denotes a situation in which the probabilities are unknown to the decision maker. Agriculture risk differs from farmer to farmer and from farming system to farming system. The study's major goal is to look at the elements that impact a farmer's risk behaviour. Principal Component Analysis was used to examine the scale's eighteen positive and negative items (PCA). These factors account for 19.288, 18.328, 16.284, 8.309, and 5.918 percent of the variation, respectively. After seeing a definite split in the Scree Plot graphical depiction Following the five components, it was agreed to keep the five components for future exploration. The five-component Each item/variable has a considerable loading on each other.
Risk Behavior Analysis of Shallot Farmer Production in Brebes, Central Java, Indonesia
2020
The role of shallot as a commodity that has high economic value is faced with farming that has a high risk. The risks faced by farmers will affect the behavior of farmers in dealing with risks. This study aims to: (1) analyze the factors of production that affect productivity, production risks and inefficiencies of farmers, (2) analyze the behavior of farmers in facing production risks and (3) analyze the socio-economic factors that influence the risk behavior of farmers. Data analysis uses a model that has been developed by Kumbhakar. The results showed that female paid labor input and adhesive had a negative effect on productivity while seed had a positive effect on productivity. Male family labor and Adhesive inputs can increase the risk of shallot farming production. ZA fertilizer can reduce technical inefficiencies. Shallot farmers on average in the study location are risk averse in the allocation of the use of production inputs. The number of family members of productive age a...
1 The main objective of this research is to determine the reliability of the new developed instruments of farmers' attitudes toward types of risks in paddy production. The different income level groups farmers' attitude were compared. The data were collected from 286 paddy farmers at Selangor Integrated Agricultural Development Area (IADA), Malaysia. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 0.894 was obtained, which is above the minimum acceptable value of 0.70. One way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) test was conducted to determine whether significant difference on the attitude toward risk exist among different income level groups farmers. The ANOVA result shows significant differences in their attitudes toward risks with respect to three categories of risks: Production risk F (2, 282) = 21.477, P = 0.001, Financial risk F (2, 283) =21. 506, P= 0.001, and Environmental risk F (2, 283) = 27.245, P = 0.001.

International Journal of Research in Business and Social Science (2147- 4478), 2019
This study aims to: (1) analyze the risk of production, price, and income of technical irrigated rice fields and rainfed rice field in South Lampung regency, 2) to analyze farmer behavior against rice farming risk on the technical irrigated rice field and rainfed rice field. The research was conducted in August - September 2016 in Kecamatan Palas, rice production center in South Lampung. The sample of farmers consist of 23 technical irrigated rice field farmers, and 37 rainfed rice field farmers, taken proportionally by random sampling method .Data were analyzed quantitatively including Coefficient of variation analysis, Bernoulli Theory, and Neuman Morgenstern The results show: (1) the risk of production, price, and income faced by rice farmers on technical irrigated rice field is lower than from rainfed; (2) most rice farmers behave neutrally to the risk, on technical irrigated rice fieldvalued78,26 percent and in rainfed rice field valued 81.08 percent. No farmers were found to...
This research aims to analyze characteristics of semiorganic and conventional vegetable farmers, types of crops and cropping patterns, the cost structure of farming, and risk productivity semiorganic and conventional vegetable. The research location is determined by purposively, in four villages in Semarang Regency. The number of samples 132 farmers, consisting of 30 semiorganic vegetable farmers and 92 conventional vegetable farmers randomly selected. Data were collected by survey method through interviewing by using structured questionnaires and observation. The data were analyzed descriptively and risk analysis with used calculation of standard deviation and coefficient variation. The results show characteristics semiorganic vegetable farmers such as age, education, number of family members in farming, farming experience are higher than conventional vegetable farmers, except farm size. The types of crops semiorganic and conventional vegetables farmers are the same, but the semiorganic vegetable farmers more choose cabbage, tomatoes and chinese cabbage. Conventional vegetable farmers choose cabbage, chili, tomatoes and tobacco. The highest cost structure for semiorganic and conventional vegetable farming is for labor costs. The highest cost of vegetable production was in labor costs. Total production cost of semiorganic vegetables was 31 percents higher than conventional ones. The risk analysis of productivity used by deviation standard showed that the risk productivity of semiorganic vegetables 59 percents higher than the conventional one. The risk analysis of productivity used by the coefficient of variation showed that the risk productivity of organic vegetable 13 percents lower than the conventional ones.
Risk and Risk Management Strategies in Onion Production in Kebbi State of Nigeria
Journal of Social Sciences, 2005
In a study conducted in the onion producing area of Kebbi State of Nigeria in determining the risk and risk management strategies in onion farming, analyses (using frequency distribution, importance indices and portfolio model) of primary data collected from onion farmers revealed that output price followed by input price were ranked highest among the various risk sources. Onion farmers were poor in the use of risk reducing strategies to the extent that no risk reducing strategy exists for market risk. Reason for non-use of some risk reducing strategies is either that they are not available or difficult to implement. The most popular risk reducing strategy used was crop enterprise diversification. A risk-loving farmer should engage in onion enterprise only, and a risk averse farmer in non-onion crops enterprise if crop enterprise specialization is compulsory. In enterprise diversification, a low risk averse farmer should put high proportion of farm to onion, which reduces as risk aversion increases until onion farm is 20% of total farm size for high risk averse farmer. It is suggested that agricultural policy makers should encourage among onion farmers the use of formal insurance and cooperative marketing. Research effort should be directed at obtaining improved seed/seedling and efficient and effective storage and processing technologies that will elongate the shelf life of onion.
Potato Growers’ Risk Perception: A Case Study in Ardabil Province of Iran
Journal of Agricultural Science and Technology, 2016
The aim of this study was to examine potato growers' perceptions of risk sources and risk management strategies and their risk management behavior. A Survey research method was used in this study. The data originated from a sample of potato growers (n= 128) of Ardabil Province in the cropping year of 2013. The respondents were divided into two groups of Less Risk-Averse (LRA) and More Risk-Averse (MRA). Results show that more than half of the respondents were MRA. In general, potato price, marketing and yield were important sources of risk. The MRA farmers perceived price, yield, input costs and subsidy elimination as highly important sources of risk. Change in farming practices times, sharing farm machinery and hedging were important perceived strategies. LRA farmers marked more importance to management strategies than their counterparts. Except for a few strategies, there was consistency between the growers’ perception and management behavior. The results also show that there ...
Cambodia's vegetable sector is typically poorly managed and susceptible to a multitude of shocks preventing producers from meeting consumer demand. Thus, consumers rely on imported vegetables from Vietnam and Thailand. The government of Cambodia is intent upon capitalizing on this demand for domestic vegetables and has shown support for farmers and marketers shifting toward the vegetable sector. However, the government must work quickly if it wishes to assist its growers in capturing this market. Farming is inherently risky as farmers are faced with numerous exogenous factors that can alter yields and farm income. The implementation of risk management strategies tailored to the risk-taking behavior of the farming population can significantly reduce the impacts of these exogenous shocks. This study assesses existing vegetable grower's risk management strategies, their knowledge and perceptions and find that the accessibility of producer groups, savings groups, crop insurance, and contract farming can greatly mitigate the risks deemed most significant by growers. These strategies will likely exhibit high rates of adoption and can significantly reduce risks and farm profit losses. Finally, we recommend the establishment of a crop insurance program by the government as well as an overall policy environment in which contract farming can thrive in order to support vegetable growers and meet the countries growing vegetable demand.
