Psychological Features Associated with Health in Undergraduate Students

Procedia - Social and Behavioral Sciences, 2016

Background: The social and human sciences have enormously contributed to the study of health and well being of populations as well as to the risk factors and individual resilience that are associated to them. Thus, it is a general thought that one of the main functions of health professionals is to promote healthy behaviours in people. Aim: To verify if some psychological characteristics (Self-Esteem, Locus of Control, Internal Sense of Coherence) are associated to health(lifestyle, health state, general health perception) in higher education students. Method: The sample was made up by 548 students, men and women, who were attending Nursing School (n= 322) and other graduations without any health studies-Management, Languages, Secretarial and Administration (n=226). The protocol included: Inventory "My Lifestyle" Scale "State of Health"; To measure psychological variables: Sense of Coerence Questionnaire; Self-Esteem Clinical Inventory; Self-Esteem Physical Inventory; and Locus of Control Questionnaire. Results: There is an association, statistically significant between health variables and psychological variables, in the expected sense. Also, the results suggest that the Internal Sense of Coherence factorsunderstanding(ß= .336) and generalised significance(ß= .294)-are, in interaction with General Health Perception, predictors in a positive and highly significant way, for Health State, specifically in Nursing School Students. Conclusion: We believe this study points to a growing need of a bigger participation of psychologists (along with other health professionals) in the development of programs related to public health. Apart from an involvement in primary health care it will also be important for these professionals to participate in differentiated care.

In research, it has been shown that there is a correlation between the se...

Wellness and Self-esteem Among Turkish University Students

This study investigated the differences among 465 Turkish first year university students regarding overall wellness and four of its dimensions (cognitive emotional wellness-CEW, relational wellness-RW, life goal-LG, and physical wellness-PW) in terms of self-esteem levels and gender. The data were gathered by administering the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and a short-form of the Wellness Inventory (WI-30). The results of ANOVA showed significant main effects for high-low self-esteem and gender, indicating that those who had a high level of self-esteem, and females, as compared to males, reported higher levels of overall wellness. The results of MANOVA employed on the four wellness subscores yielded a significant main effect for high-low self-esteem and for gender. The findings indicated that students who have higher self-esteem reported higher scores on all the four dimensions of wellness; and females reported higher levels of relational wellness and physical wellness than males.

Factors associated with self-rated health status in university students: a cross-sectional study in three European countries

BMC Public Health, 2008

Background: Self-rated health status (SRHS) is a reliable and valid measure for assessing the subjective and objective health of individuals. Previous studies have either focused predominantly on the elderly or investigated only a narrow range of factors potentially associated with SRHS. In examining student populations, these past studies were limited to single countries. The objectives of this study were to assess which candidate variables were independently associated with SRHS in university students, to compare these variables by country and by gender, and to investigate which of the variables was most important as a rating frame for SRHS.

Health Behaviours and Well-being among College and University Students

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL FOR INNOVATIVE RESEARCH IN MULTIDISCIPLINARY FIELD, 2023

The term "health behaviour" describes the attitudes and behaviours of a person towards their health and wellbeing. These behaviours refer to routine actions that enhance self-awareness and a sense of wellbeing, including actions that support and promote healthy lives. Any activity carried out for the purpose of preventing or detecting disease or enhancing health and well-being was characterized by Conner and Norman (1996) as a health habit. Health behaviours are activities, behaviour patterns, and habits related to health maintenance, health restoration, and health enhancement, according to Gochman (1997) in the Handbook of Health Behavior Research. Depending on one's viewpoint, the term "health promotion" might mean many different things (Tones & Tilford, 2001). It is a method of empowering someone to have more control over and make improvements to their health. It is a significant issue that seeks to preserve one's degree of health, employment capacity, and potential health resources. Health-promoting activities, those that people engage in to improve and preserve their health, can be crucial in addressing health issues and advancing the general health of society as well as the health of adolescents in particular. The term "well-being" indicates that people believe their lives are going well; well-being is a result that is beneficial for individuals and numerous societal sectors. A healthy lifestyle starts with a good quality of life. Public policy benefits from monitoring these situations. However, a lot of indicators that assess living conditions don't assess how people feel about their lives, such as how well their relationships are, how resilient they are in the face of good emotions, how much they have achieved in life, or how satisfied they are with it overall. Therefore, the current study has investigated health behaviours and feelings/well-being among UG, PG, and Ph.D. students. 2. Review of Literature:  Suksatan W et al (2021) The study examined the stress, adversity quotient, and health behaviours of university students in Thailand. A cross-sectional predictive study was carried out on predictors of health behaviours among undergraduate students during the COVID-19 pandemic. 416 undergraduate students under the age of 18 who

Th e 941 HPLP II questionnaires were collected and analyzed (79% response rate). Both genders showed a medium level HPLP II total score (male M=2.68; IQR=2.42-2.92 vs. female M=2.65; IQR=2.46-2.90), without signifi cant gender diff erence. A signifi cantly higher score was observed in the subscales on health responsibility (p=0.027) and interpersonal relations (p<0.001) among female compared to male students, and a signifi cantly higher score in the subscales on physical activity (p<0.001) and stress management (p=0.025) among male compared to female students.
