Comparative Investigation on Properties of Self Compacting Concrete and Conventional Concrete

The primary aim of this study is to investigate the strength properties and flexural behaviour of beam, of M40 grade self-compacting concrete made with fly ash, GGBFS and a mixture of both in different proportions and compare its values with M40 grade conventional concrete. Conventional concrete is designed by using IS: 10262-2009 and SCC is designed using Modified Nan Su method. For this purpose cement is replaced by weight in three different proportions of 10%, 20% and 30% by fly ash and GGBFS respectively. Also 20 % of cement was replaced by fly ash and GGBFS in different proportions such as 70%:30%, 60%:40% and 50%:50%. The characteristics of SCC like passing ability, flow ability and resistance to segregation have been checked using slump flow, L box test and V funnel test as per EFNARC guidelines. Specimens are tested for compressive strength, flexural strength, splitting tensile strength.

Review on Behaviour of High Strength Self Compacting Concrete

Over the years, concrete structures designed on the basis of strength have been able to meet the criterion of safety however the compliance of durability criterion remained a distant dream. As a result, many concrete structures were out of service or they were rehabilitated at a huge cost. Most of these concrete structures were erected by producing and placing concrete at the site, which results in many workmanship problems e.g. honeycombing, segregation of aggregates, bleeding, sand streaking, and many other problems. Proper shuttering, mix design, proper placing and vibration can only be overcome many of these problems. Recently, these problems have been addressed and a viable solution has emerged in the form of Self-compacting concrete, SCC and High strength self-compacting concrete, HSSCC. In the last decade, use of SCC and HSSCC has provided remedies from many of these problems in Japan, Europe and North America. In this paper, the behaviour of HSSCC is critically reviewed. Properties of materials used to prepare HSSCC are discussed first, followed by the properties of HSSCC. This type of HSSCC has been used in many applications. It has been shown that the use of HSSCC offers economic, social and environmental benefits over traditional vibrated concrete constructions.

This paper gives a review on Self Compacting Concrete (SCC) to be made using various Mineral Admixtures and Fibers. In current scenario of construction industries due to demand in the construction of large and complex structures, which often leads to difficult concreting conditions. When large quantity of heavy reinforcement is to be placed in a reinforced concrete (RC) member, it is difficult to ensure fully compacted without voids or honeycombs. Compaction by manual or by mechanical vibraators is very difficult in this situation. That leads to the invention of new type of concrete named as self-compacting concrete (SCC). This type of concrete flows easily around the reinforcement and into all corners of the formwork. Self-compacting concrete describes a concerete with the ability to compact itself only by means of its own weight without the requirement of vibration. Self-copacting concrete also known as Self-consolidating Concrete or Self Compacting High Performance Concrete. It is very fluid and can pass around abstructions and fill all the nooks and corners without the risk of either mortar or other ingredients of concrete separating out, at the same time there are no entrapped air or rock pockets. This type of concrete mixture does not require any compaction and is saves time, labour and energy.
