Schools are not inherently dangerous places in terms of life safety and fire. Indeed there has not been a single fatality recorded in a school fire during school hours, as far as can be established, in the whole history of fire record-keeping in Dhaka. Schools are encouraged to adopt a fire safe approach to the management of their school and to develop emergency management plans to cover the event of fire or other emergency. Investigating the consideration for fire safety in the design phase of public and private school facilities in Dhaka indicated that the designer as well as the users should identify the need of providing the fire safety requirements: fire detection and notification systems; fire suppression and extinguishing systems and means of egress and evacuation systems. Such Technology has revolutionized the design of schools. The objective of this paper is to present a study for the consideration of fire safety during the design stages of school facilities in Dhaka; and to present the need and development of a standards and guidelines relating to fire safety whereby existing school facilities can be evaluated for the purpose of identifying and eliminating fire hazards, and meeting the minimum requirements of current situation.

Fire is universally accepted as important to human life, it was regarded as the greatest discovery made by humanity, and in the technological evolution in the growth of civilization. Fire provided warmth and light, protected humans from predators, and helped in creating better tools for hunting and method of cooking. The use of fire as the source of energy in technological development and the realization that fire, when it becomes out of control can be devastating to human life and property created the need to control the fire and be responsible around it. Over the years the study of fire and its hazards are given us a wealth of knowledge in preventing, protecting, and fighting a fire most efficiently. These guidelines are scientific and well-proven. Following them can benefit in saving people’s lives as well as loss of properties. Each place requires a different kind of safety measure depending on the location, the people, and the nature of work, hence it is important to follow safety measures not only at the workplace but also everywhere in day-to-day life. Hazards and dangers exist everywhere, be it at home, workplace, or public places. When it comes to handling hazard, awareness is a keyword. Being aware of these hazards and having safety behaviors in our everyday life can prevent many tragic incidents. The objective of this fire safety guide is to create awareness on fire prevention, fire protection, and safe practices at the home, various workplaces, educational institutions (school and colleges), and public commercial places. Every safety practice involves human behaviors, hence creating awareness among children will be a valuable investment for the future generation. Any fire, if it turns into an accident can be devastating even it started small. Burnings, injuring, and even affecting people, damaging properties, equipment, and livelihood can be really damaging to people involved. So fire prevention is a better way to minimize the loss that could affect lives or businesses. A plan for fire prevention and fire protection for workplace or home should always be there, which can minimize the effect of the fire. The fire hazards are universal in their destruction, however, vary from country to country depending on the local climate, social behavior, and the local industries, etc. In Oman and the Gulf states, the high temperature, especially in the summer months can heighten the chance of fire accidents. It is common, universally, for the number of fire incidents to increase in the summer. A fire prevention plan in place can minimize these incidents. Safe practices have to be implemented and maintained at all times as a preventive action and also have a fire protection system in place, including adequate numbers of firefighting appliances, as recommended by the The Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority (CDAA) and installed and maintained in operating condition at all times. Most fires are preventable. Those responsible for workplaces and other buildings to which the public has access can avoid them by adopting the right behaviors and procedures. Let us start with understanding fire and the substances that cause fire and explosion

Fire Hazard, Its Consequences and Possible Preventions

From the inception of human civilization, the role of fire is very significant and still in the modernized living its importance has not been reduced. As a source of energy, fire has various uses in our everyday living. Fire, if not manageable, can be disastrous for human settlements. Urban settlements of the world are more vulnerable to fire hazard due to the involvement of huge population in economic activities, industrial and other activities. Urban fire incidence is alarmingly increasing all over Bangladesh particularly in larger urban centers. Due to rapid unplanned urbanization and the absence of adequate safety measures in the city system, All Cities are seriously facing this hazard at present.

EVALUATION OF FIRE PREVENTION MEASURES: THE CASE OF SCHOOL OF ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGY (SET) BUILDING, FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY, AKURE (FUTA)

A building lacking adequate fire prevention puts the lives of occupants at a life-threatening risk, especially judging by the recent fire incidences within the University which includes the case of Centre for Continuing Education (CCE) building as well as the Old Senate Chamber. Most public buildings lately are designed without effective adherence to standards required to achieve safety of lives and properties. However, an appraisal of some of the prevention measures as it relates to the School of Environmental Technology within the Federal University of Technology, Akure is the main focus of this study. The paper investigated the possible causes of fire outbreaks in public buildings, several fire suppressing equipment provided and the conditions of these equipment. The number of exits and escape stairs within the building as well as their widths and how their sizes conform to the minimum standard required for evacuation. Data was collected through primary and secondary sources. The study found out that, the fire safety measures within the building are insufficient in catering for the high level of usage. Fire assembly points were also not a part of the building design. The study however ended with some recommendations such as provision of efficient fire suppressing equipment, signage on specific locations along the corridor.

Fire Safety Awareness and Management in Multi-Storey Students' Hostels

_________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT— Achieving an acceptable level of fire safety in university students' hostels is of utmost importance. Fire resulting from students' hostels can cause devastating effects if appropriate fire safety management measures are not put in place. This study presents the results of a questionnaire survey which sought to assess the perceptions of students on fire safety awareness and management in multi-storey hostels around the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) campus. Data obtained from the study was analyzed by mean score rankings and percentages. The findings of the study, showed that majority of the respondents do not attach seriousness to the issue of fire safety in the various hostels surveyed, as such, fire safety awareness and management is low amongst most of the hostel occupants. The results further showed that 'storage of flammable materials in safe areas', 'provision of clear signage indicating exit routes and location of fire safety equipment', regular inspection and maintenance of electrical installations', 'regular inspection and maintenance of fire safety equipment', and 'accessibility to fire hydrants' are key practices which if implemented by management could control the outbreak of fire in the hostels. Although this study focuses on multi-storey students' hostels around KNUST campus, the findings should be of relevance to other hostels located within and around the campuses of other universities in Ghana.
