Laboratories are an indispensable part of the fundamental sciences. Laboratories are important learning environments that enable students to relate events to daily life as well as being places where theoretical knowledge is implemented. The present study investigated the knowledge and usage level of preservice biology teachers regarding lab equipment and materials. The study utilized a descriptive survey. A total of 61 preservice biology teachers from the Biology Education Department of a public university in Turkey constituted the participants. Lab Equipment and Materials Recognition Form that is developed by the researcher of the present study was used to collect data. In the design of this form, the 9-12 grade biology curriculum was first analyzed, and a list of frequently-used equipment and materials of biology laboratories was created in line with the opinions of field experts. The form included 40 laboratories equipment and materials and questions regarding the recognition of these items, their functions, and their application processes. The preservice teachers' answers to these questions were graded as: zero points for each incorrect answer, one point for each partially correct answer, and two points for each correct answer. The data obtained were analyzed using cluster analysis, descriptive analysis, one-way analysis of variance, and independent samples T-test in SPSS27 software, and the Polycoric correlation coefficient in Factor Analysis software. The results revealed that the preservice teachers mainly recognize the biology laboratories equipment and materials but generally lack information regarding the application process of laboratories equipment and materials.

Basic ecology is the basic science that studies the interrelationships between living things and their environment. One of the content in this course is terrestrial ecosystems. The aim of learning this subject is students can carry out experiments (practicum) both in the laboratory or in the UNWAHA environment. This research aims to improve the cognitive learning outcomes of students by applying guide discovery learning in making miniature ecosystems. This research uses a pra experiment design. This research uses a one-group pretest-posttest design research design that is doing a pre-test before implementation and a posttest after implementation. To know the increase of student's cognitive learning outcomes through guide discovery learning, used N-gain test and paired sample ttest. The research instruments used are observation sheets and tests (pre-test and post-test). The results showed that the cognitive learning outcomes of students increased with an average grade of 64 to 84. N-Gain results show that two students of low category, 16 students of moderate category, and three students of high category students. Based on the results of the t-test obtained Sig < 0.05 is 0.00. Then it can be stated that there is a significant difference between the value of pre-test and post-test. In other words, there was an increase in student learning outcomes after the implementation of discovery learning guide learning. Based on the average class and t-test results, concluded that guided discovery learning can increase student's cognitive learning outcomes.

The aim of this study is to determine what trends Turkish biology education studies indicate. To achieve this aim, the researchers examined online databases of the Higher Education Council (YÖK) and open access archieves of graduate thesis in Turkish universities web sites. Finally, totally 138 graduate theses were elicited to analyze in regard to following matrix (Year, Research Interest, Research Methodology and Sample). The results show that descriptive study for research interest and survey for research methodolody are highly dominant in the graduate theses under investigation. Also, even though learning involves in an interaction amongst student, teacher, parent and administor, there is no study on investigating what the student parents think about their learning responsibility. It is suggested that further studies should be undertaken to emerge Turkish biology education trend.
Science laboratory is a very important resource input for teaching science. Learning science is enhanced and the understanding level is improved when students are engaged in science laboratory for practical experiments. The current study aimed to assess the status of Biology laboratory and practical activities in some selected secondary and Preparatory schools of Borena Zone. A random sampling technique was employed to collect data from students, Biology teachers and technicians of the study schools. Structured and semi-structured questionnaires and observation of laboratories and other facility was used. All respondents (100%) from Kilenso School respond as there is no laboratory room while majority of respondents (80.2%) from Bule Hora School respond as they have common laboratory for each science and no separate laboratory for Secondary and Preparatory school. In all schools there is no facility, equipments and chemicals are simply stored in non-ventilated laboratory room due to absence of skilled laboratory technicians and even no cooling system. The current study is similar to report of Hunde and Tegegne (2010) in which Jimma University community school and Yebu School have laboratory which is not functional while Bilida School has no laboratory set up at all. The study is also similar to the report of Tesfamariam et al. (2014) in which most laboratory rooms available in secondary schools of Mekele town were not built for laboratory purpose and lacked even the most facility. Absence of laboratory practical activities makes students at secondary and preparatory schools of the study area lack interest to join science class.
