Agriculture sector is now facing several challenges, among which, the scarcity of labour, increasing cost of production, environmental degradation etc., are very important. Furthermore, India's population is expected to reach 1.64 billion by 2050 and it is required to produce up to 333 million tonnes of food grains in near future. In this context, information and communication technologies (ICT) driven tools and solutions can help people to make better decisions. Among many emerging technologies which can provide solutions, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), often known as drones is one of the most recent innovation. It is also a non-human centric, transparent, evidence-based technology. It can save labour while also achieving social distancing norms during COVID 19 and national lockdown. In this article, an effort was made to synthesize available information on multiple uses of drones in Agriculture.

Drones: New generation technology for crop protection

Agriculture is the prime source of income in developing countries with 60 percent of people directly or indirectly linked. With the advancement in the agricultural sector, the productivity of crops is increased manifold. Nevertheless, early detection and control of pest infestations are still a major concern. Delayed or improper application of pesticides at right time may favor an increase in crop loss. Though farmers keep trying to conserve crops, they are unable to succeed at the maximum level due to inadequate monitoring and proper management practices. Also, most of the producers are adopting unsuitable methods for monitoring the crops due to a lack of sufficient facilities. The involvement of hi-tech agriculture and the influence of technology in the agricultural sector have been always productive since its commencement. In recent times, various techniques and innovative technologies were introduced to replace manual involvement. Of which, drone technology was applied for various agricultural purposes viz., crop pest protection, crop nutrient application, crop growth monitoring etc. The use of drone technology has the potential to provide a sustainable solution in the context of enhancing the productivity as well as efficiency of the agriculture sector. The present review focused on drone technology and its significance in crop protection.

PUBLISHED OVERVIEW OF DRONE BASED AGRICULTURE.pdf

The use of pesticides and fertilizers in agriculture has vital importance for crop yield. The traditional or conventional methods of irrigation like flood, drip or sprinkler irrigation have their limitations. The solution for these constraints was the basis of the development of smart irrigation system. However, the hardware installation for the smart irrigation system uses excess cultivated land. The remedy to this problem is the use of quadrotors. The use of aircraft is increasing and has now become a common sight. This task is carried out using these drones mainly because of their speed and effective spraying. This paper describes the architecture of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), which is deployed to implement a control loop for different techniques in agriculture where UAVs are instrumental in spraying chemicals on crops.

Review on Application of Drone Systems in Precision Agriculture

Procedia Computer Science, 2018

In the present era, there are too many developments in precision agriculture for increasing the crop productivity. Especially, in the developing countries like India, over 70% of the rural people depends upon the agriculture fields. The agriculture fields faces dramatic losses due to the diseases. These diseases came from the pests and insets, which reduces the productivity of the crops. Pesticides and fertilizers are used to kill the insects and pests in order to enhance the crop quality. The WHO (World Health Organization) estimated as one million cases of ill effected, when spraying the pesticides in the crop filed manually. The Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)aircrafts are used to spray the pesticides to avoid the health problems of humans when they spray manually. UAVs can be used easily, where the equipment and labors difficulty to operate. This paper reviews briefly the implementation of UAVs for crop monitoring and pesticide spraying.

Design Of A Novel Drone For Agricultural Application

Journal of Microcontroller Engineering and Applications, 2021

There are several factors that determine the production rate of crops in agriculture, namely, temperature, pressure, humidity, rain, soli, climatic conditions etc. farmers have been using pesticides and fertilizers in order to increase the production rate and to prevent the crops from insects. But these pesticides have an adverse effect on the health of farmers due to prolonged exposure and in turn prove hazardous for their health. WHO (World Health Organization) recently conducted a survey stating that it is estimated that every year nearly 3 million workers are affected by the prolonged exposure of pesticides and fertilizers and from which about 18000 die [1]. This effect of pesticides can be minimized by the use of machines such as unmanned air vehicles etc. Using agricultural drones or UAVs are a new and easier way of providing agricultural support and resolving the above mentioned issues in an efficient way. This will help in spraying of pesticides and fertilizer over crops in a precise manner and also the use of information technology will ensure that the crops will receive the exact amount of pesticides and fertilizers that are required for optimum health and productivity. This will also be an effective and efficient device which can help reduce the man labor and its cost by many folds.
