Qualitative and Quantitative Phytochemical Analyses of Talinum

Talinum triangulare is a herbaceous perennial tropical leaf. It is a nonconventional crop found in tropical regions of Africa. This study evaluated the phytochemical constituent of Talinum triangulare leaf. The preliminary phytochemical screening revealed that alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, glycoside, phenol, terpenoids and steroids were present. The quantitative analysis of Talinum triangulare was carried out on the dry sample and the result revealed that flavonoids has a concentration of 2.88mg/g, alkaloids 1.20 mg/g, steroid 2.04mg/g, saponin .45mg/g, terpenoid 0.82mg/kg, glycoside 1.32mg/kg, phenol 1.03mg/g and tannins 1.44mg/g respectively. Talinum triangulare has been shown to possess significant phytochemicals, hence it is a potential source of highly nutritious feed stuff and phytomedicine. They are of nutritional and clinical relevance considering the diverse pharmacological uses of the plant in different parts of the world.

Evaluation of the gastrointestinal activity of the aqueous root extracts of Talinum triangulare
The effect of the aqueous root extract of Talinum triangulare on the gastrointestinal system was evaluated in mice and rats using normal intestinal transit. Castor oil induced diarrhea and castor oil induced enteropooling models. The result obtained showed that, the effects of the aqueous root extract were dose dependent and biphasic in all the models used. The extract (500, 1000 and 2000 mg/kg) produced a significant (p < 0.05) dose dependent decrease in propulsion in normal intestinal transit. The extract at 2000 mg/kg produced a significant (p < 0.05) decrease in the frequency of defecation, severity of diarrhea and, afforded protection from diarrhea in rats treated with castor oil. Unlike atropine, the aqueous extract (500, 1000 and 2000 mg/kg) significantly (p < 0.05) inhibited castor oil induced enteropooling. The extract was found to contain alkaloids, saponins, tannins, combined anthraquinones, cardiac glycosides and phenol when subjected to phytochemical analysis. The extract gave an LD 50 of 5514 mg/kg when administered orally and 403 mg/kg when given intraperitoneally.

Genus Talipariti has long history of use in various traditional medicine therapeutic applications in Cuba, especially in treatment of bronchial asthma and flu. Petals of genus Talipariti are rich source of secondary metabolites and most of these metabolites are reported to possess expectorant, antasthmatic, appetitive, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties. Hence, in our study, we present a validated, sensitive, reliable, and cheap narrow-bore UHPLC-UV-ESI-MS/MS coupled to PDA (photodiode array detectors) method for the simultaneous isolation and identification of flavonoids and their glycosidic derivatives in this flower drug. In addition, about twelve compounds were identified in this specie based on chromatography retention time (t R), UV and MS/MS spectra and compared with those of isolated authentic compound and literature data. About eighth constituents were reported for the first time from Talipariti elatum. Our results demonstrated the developed method could be employed as a rapid and versatile analytical technique for identification of chemical constituents and quality control of Talipariti elatum.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is one of the major biodiversity hotspot in the world. Wild edible plants (WEPs) are widely consumed as part of daily diet by the local people and are part of their traditional culture and food habit. The T. triangulare species is a non-conventional vegetable crop of the Talinaceae family. It is well adapted to the hot and humid climate and the poor quality soil, which makes its cultivation an important economic activity for small growers. Objectives: This study was designed to put into consideration both the in vitro and in vivo investigations on Talinum triangulare (Tt), an herbaceous perennial plant that is a native of tropical America and one of the most important vegetables in Nigeria. Methods: Total phenolic contents in (mg GAE/100 g), flavonoid contents, the ferric reducing antioxidant properties (FRAP), 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), hydroxyl free radical scavenging ability (OH-) and iron chelating ability were carried out in vivo using standard described methods while GSH, GPx, catalase and SOD were determined in vivo using standard described methods. Results: In the three different solvents extraction of T. triangulare that were studied in vitro, it was noted that ethyl acetate and ethanolic fractions of T. triangulare showed potent antioxidant activity against DPPH and iron chelating property with high phenolic content except Hydroxyl free radical scavenging ability that showed highest value in the aqueous extract, while the Reduced GSH indicated the highest in the parameter determined in vivo. Conclusion: The antioxidant properties showed in this solvent extractable component probably could have been the basis for the enhanced activities of antioxidant enzymes at very lower dose in the examined tissue homogenates. Talipariti elatum (Sw.), commonly named Blue Mahoe, is used as antasthmatic, antitussive, against catarrh and expectorant in phytotherapy in Cuba, although the plants’ composition has not been determined in detail so far. An ethanolic extract from the bark of Talipariti elatum Sw. (Fryxell) Malvaceae that grows in Cuba was prepared by Soxhlet extraction with ethanol at 95% during 20 hours. The crude extract without purification was analyzed using a GCMS-QP2010 Ultra Shimadzu, and the components were identified by comparing their retention times and their mass spectra with those of NIST21Library. About 45 different chemical compounds were detected in the sample and from them, 31 chemical components were characterized and reported for the first time from Talipariti elatum. Our results demonstrate the developed method could be employed as a rapid and versatile analytical technique for identification of chemical constituents and quality control of Talipariti samples.

Chemical investigation of the dichloromethane extract of the leaves of Talinum triangulare led to the isolation of squalene (1), triglyceride (2), lutein (3) and β-carotene (4). The structures of 1-4 were identified by comparison of their 13C NMR data with those reported in the literature.
Pharmacognostical and phytochemical studies of flowers from Talipariti elatum S.w
— The flowers of Talipariti elatum, commonly named Blue Mahoe is used as antasthmatic and expectorant in phytotherapy, although the plants' composition has not been determined in detail so far. Hence, the pharmacognostic and phytochemical investigations on Talipariti elatum S.w has been carried out in this research, for the development and utilization of the promising medicinal plant. The characteristic physicochemical values like total ashes (10.48 %), water soluble ashes (8.5 %), moisture content (10.85%) and extractable matterin ethanol (33,68 %). The ethanolic extract mainly contained flavonoids in the flowers, also contained triterpens and steroids, amino acids, tannins, anthocyanidins and absence of alkaloids, coumarins, saponins, quinones and cardiotonic glycosides.

Talipariti elatum (Sw.) Fryxell is an endemic tree from Cuba, also known as “Majagua”, and has traditionally been used to improve asthmatic crisis and flu, as expectorant, appetitive, emollient, sudorific and laxative. Used as ornamental in park and avenues, its wood is used to make furnitures and baseball baths. In order to offer aspects related to the quality and effectiveness of the plant, its pharmacognostic, physicochemical, and phytochemical parameters of the fruits was realized. Moisture content (13.47%), alcohol extractive value at 95% (4.07%) and water extractive value (7.36%), total ash (3.58%), water soluble ash (0.70%) and acid insoluble ash value (1.56%) were tested for. Phytochemical screening revealed the possible presence of flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, anthocyanidins, reductants sugars and astringents and/or bitter principles, and the absence of coumarins, saponins, quinones, cardiotonic glycosides and triterpens and/or steroids.
