Innovating for sustainability: with case studies from the organic dairy industry, the fish processing industry and the car industry

2004

Innovation is a distributed process involving several stakeholders, especially in Denmark with a lot of small and medium-sized companies. The enterprises are very much dependent on collaboration and knowledge sharing within the product chain as well as close relations to the knowledge and regulatory network. For environmental innovations the development in the environmental discourse has made this characteristic more conspicuous considering the product oriented environmental policy. Theoretically, the paper gives a brief overview of different positions within innovation and network theory, and on that basis a framework is developed and discussed in relation to environmental innovations. Empirically, the paper highlights how enterprises within two different trades in the Danish food industry have made environmental innovations related to their processes and products. An investigation has been made with in-depth case studies of seven dairies producing organic milk and of ten fish proc...

Understanding Green Innovation: A Conceptual Framework

Sustainability

In recent years, the growing emergence of environmental problems has meant that sustainability and related concepts such as green innovation have acquired special importance. This has resulted in a significant body of literature addressing these concepts. To help to integrate this extensive literature and establish a theoretical framework, this study summarizes the main principles and roots of green innovation. To this end, this study first makes a generic theoretical approach to the concept of innovation. Then, due to its direct link with green innovation, emphasis is placed on the importance of the value of sustainability in companies. After that, the meaning and current relevance of green innovation in today’s business environment is addressed. Finally, the main precepts and fundamentals of green innovation are established, and a series of academic proposals are made to further advance the study of this concept. This theoretical review may serve as encouragement to further resear...

Green Innovation Practice For Organizational Performance And Sustainable Development

Journal of Positive School Psychology vol 6, 2022

Many companies all over the globe are adopting environmental management techniques that incorporate all types of green solutions as part of their present efforts to ensure survival and sustainability. While some common tools and knowledge may be used to monitor, track, and assess these green components in a linked element, they are usually managed on a piecemeal basis and under multiple management standards; and they are most typically managed as ad-hoc initiatives rather than programmes. To date, two primary stakeholders-management and customers-have exerted pressure on the company to implement sustainability measures. As a case study, this concept paper examines one organization's use of green management and sustainable green practises. It asserts that management has a responsibility to play in reducing negative sustainability consequences. Two theoretical lenses were offered to provide significance to the study, however further research is needed to back up the conclusions of this work.

Relation of Environmental Sustainability to Corporate Social Responsibility and Green Innovation

Journal of Cleaner Production, 2020

Although extensive studies have focused on the impact of different corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities on environmental sustainability, few studies investigated the effects of CSR activities on environmentally sustainable development and green innovation. Yet, as a determinant of environmental strategies, green innovation haven't received much attention. Therefore, this study explored how different CSR dimensions impacts on environmentally sustainable development and further on green innovation. Data were collected from 282 respondents belonging to the manufacturing industries of Pakistan from January 2019 to April 2019; and analyzed by adopting methods of partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) and grey relational analysis. As per study results, all dimensions of CSR were found positively significant towards environmentally sustainable development. Further, the environmentally sustainable development positively enhances green innovation. This research employed an innovative attempt to evaluate the ranking of these constructs by using grey relational analysis whereby it was found that CSR to environment had a stronger effect, whereas CSR to consumer had a weaker impact on environmentally sustainable development. The research findings suggest that CSR activities should be embedded in the organizational environmental strategies for green innovation, as all CSR dimensions had positive relations with environmentally sustainable development.

Environmental Challenges and Green Innovation Strategy: A Vigorous Development of Greener Dynamics

Sustainability

This study investigated the strengths of internal and external environmental challenges to the Green Innovation Strategy (GIS). This study tried, also, to observe GBIS’ predictive power of on Green Organizational Identity (GOI), Green Innovation (GI) and Green Creativity (GC). The researchers gathered the cross-sectional data from the top managers of Saudi Arabia’s manufacturing industries. We employed a Structural Equation Model (SEM) to obtain the outcomes to form the data. This study’s findings demonstrate that external pressures, such as Policy Pressure (PP) and Market Pressure (MP) and internal driving forces such as Innovation Resources (IR) and Innovation Capability (IC), have a positive and significant effect on GIS. This study’s findings demonstrate, also, that GIS has a positive and significant effect on GOI, GI and GC. Finally, this study’s findings show that GOI is a considerable predictor of GI and GC. This study’s findings provide the path for policymakers to formulate...

Does Green Product Innovation affect Performance of Saudi Chemical Industrial Firms?

JOURNAL OF SOCIAL SCIENCE RESEARCH, 2017

Although many companies have recognized the concepts of environmental innovation, little research attention has been devoted to the consideration of relations between green product innovation and firm performance. This study aimed to investigate the impact of green product innovation on firms’ performance. A structured questionnaire was developed for the purpose of data collection, and 19 Saudi chemical firms were included. The data from each of the returned questionnaire were coded and entered into (SPSS) version 18.0 software, simple linear regression which was used for statistical analysis. Response rate was 89.4%. The results show that that green product innovation has a statistically significant impact on firms’ performance (calculated F was 91.7); with statistically significant at p < 0.00. These results can help companies involved in manufacturing green products to create a new environment and enhance their business performance.

ScienceDirect Positive Influences of Green Innovation on Company Performance

This study aims to examine the effects of green innovation on environmentally sensitive company performance. Here, green innovation includes green product and process sub-dimensions and environmentally efficient company performance has also two sub-dimensions as environmental performance and competitive advantage of company through its green facilities. In order to find out relationship between green innovation and environmentally sensitive company performance a survey was performed among companies which present first 500 companies with their turnover according to Istanbul Chamber of Industry's records. With gathered data from survey study, correlation and regression analyses were conducted. Moreover, to detect if there is any difference according to company characteristics, some further analyses were performed. Results of this study states that, green innovation activities have significant effect on a company's environmental performance and competitive advantage. Especially, green process innovation explains changes on environmental performance and competitive advantage. Any green difference of company's basic processes not only reduces company's environmental effects but also moves the company to a better position among its competitors.
