Abstract
Ovarian cancer is a heterogeneous tumor with highly variable clinical features. However, it is diagnosed based on rigid, traditional criteria, and the prognosis is defined according to the major histomorphological pattern and degree of differentiation of the tumor. Recently, the gene expression profile, mutational status, epigenetic features, and gene drivers of ovarian cancer have been explored in molecular analyses, which has led to the identification of novel disease subtypes based on molecular signatures. In the clinical setting, these signatures not only allow an accurate prognostic prediction but also contribute to targeted therapy that includes angiogenesis inhibitors and small molecules in combination, or not, with conventional chemotherapy. Molecular signatures of ovarian cancer have also been detected in several studies investigating the genomics of high-grade serous tumors.
