Older persons constitute one of the most vulnerable sections of the society. They are not only physically weak but also lack in economic resources, self esteem and social status . Under the changing socio-economic and demographic conditions family is unable to provide support and care to the older persons and some are also feeling elderly are useless. Thus, old age put more wrinkle on one's mind than on his face. According to word of Seneca “Old age is an incurable disease''. It cannot be prevented rather it can be protected and promoted.

Perceived stress and coping strategies among senior citizens in selected urban and rural community, Bankura, West Bengal

A descriptive survey was conducted on assessment of Perceived stress and coping strategies among senior citizens living in Bankura block 1 and Bankura municipality ward-20, west Bengal with 104 senior citizens aging 61 years and above selected by simple random sampling technique. The objectives were to assess the level of stress of senior citizens, to find out coping strategies adopted by them, to ascertain relationship between stress and coping strategies, and to determine the association between stress and adopted coping strategies with selected demographic variables. Structured interview schedule was used to collect demographic characteristics. Standardized PSS Scale was used to assess level of stress and standardized brief COPE Scale was used for measuring adopted coping strategies. The study results depicted that majority (71.16%) of senior citizens in urban and most (84.62%) of senior citizens in rural had moderate stress whereas 28.84% in urban, 15.38% in rural senior citizens had severe stress. Majority of senior citizens in urban (61.55%) and rural (63.47%) were having adopted moderate coping strategies, religious coping strategies was use both in urban and rural. Stress was negatively correlated (-0.62) with adopted coping strategies at 0.01 level of significance. Stress and coping strategies were significantly associated with age, occupation, socioeconomic status, type of familial support, chronic physical illness. The present study was limited to age up to 80 years of senior citizens. The scope of generalization of findings was limited to present study population. The findings will enable nursing personnel to become more observant in health care services. An experimental study can be done to reduce stress among senior citizens.

Assessment of depression and adopted coping strategies among senior citizens living in selected block of Bankura, West Bengal

A descriptive survey was conducted to assess Depression and adopted coping strategies among senior citizens living in Bankura block 1, Bankura, West Bengal. The study was aimed to assess the level of Depression and coping strategies adopted by senior citizens.106 participants were selected by simple random sampling. Standardized Geriatric Depression Scale-SF was used to assess level of Depression and standardized brief COPE Scale was used for measuring adopted coping strategies. The study results depicted that majority (70.76%) of senior citizens had Depression in which 9.44% of senior citizens had severe Depression followed by 28.30% moderate Depression, 33.02% mild Depression. About 22.64% of senior citizens were having poor adopted coping strategies followed by 59.43% average and only 17.93% good. Depression was negatively correlated (r=-0.886) with adopted coping strategies at 0.001 level of significance.

A comparative study to assess the level of anxiety and depression among senior citizens living in urban area and rural area of Sangli district

ABSTRACT: A Cross-sectional comparative descriptive research design was adopted for this study. The study was conducted in community setting of Sangli district. Reliability was done using split half method of statistics. A descriptive study on correlates of stress and coping in relation to demographic variables in retirees of Kashmir valley

Background: As age develops in employees, they have to get retirement from job permanently or they have to reach their retirement period. Studies on adjustment at retirement report that one-thirds of adults report significant difficulty during this process. This study was carried out to correlate stress and coping among old age retirees in relation to sociodemographic variables. Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted among 100 retirees of district Srinagar between June 2015 and June 2016, using a semi-structured questionnaire. Levels of Stress among elderly retirees and their coping were assessed. Correlates of stress and coping were assessed with respect to different sociodemographic variables. Results: Nearly 40% of cases had moderate level, 03% had severe level, 04% had extremely severe level, and around 35% had no stress. Majority of retired employees 85% either used average level, or used good level of coping with a minority 10% using low level of coping. There was a significant positive correlation between the stress and gender, stress and education and stress and years of experience. However there was statistically no significance between coping and demographic variables. Conclusions: There is a need for organized family and social support to improve the physical and psychological health of elderly.

A Descriptive Study on Perceived Levels of Stress, Coping and Their Correlation in Retirees of Kashmir Valley

Background: Retirement is a major and fundamental life change that affects numerous areas. The transition from a life of work to one of retirement has both practical and emotional implications. Apart from physical health issues, they are more likely to suffer from mental and psychological distress. Materials and methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted among 100 retirees of district Srinagar from June 2015 to June 2016, using a semi-structured questionnaire. Levels of Stress and coping among retirees were assessed using the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales and Brief COPE scale. Results: Nearly 40(40%) of cases had moderate level (10-12), 03(03%) had severe level (13-16), 04(04%) had extremely severe level (17+), and around 35(35%) had no stress (0-7). Majority of retired employees 85(85%)either used average level (57-84), or used good level (85-112) of coping with a minority 10(10%) using low level (28-56) of coping. There was a significant positive correlation between the stress and coping scores among retired employees. Conclusion: The perceived level of stress was moderate among retired employees and the retirees used average level of coping to deal with the retirement stress. There is a need for organized family and social support to improve the physical and psychological health of retirees.

Stress Problems in Elderly people

Introduction: Ageing is considered a problem in our society. Old age is the time associated with physical, a psychological and social change which leads to vulnerable conditions to acquire physical, psychological and social health problems. This study aims to find out the health problems among elderly and to determine the factors associated with health problems. So, they need proper physical as well as social care during this period. Methods: A descriptive study was carried out among 40 elderly who were the members of senior societies of ward number 2 Dhangadhi sub-metropolitans. Elderly of aged 65 years & above were selected purposively for the study. Result: The mean age of the elderly were 70 years among them 62% were females. Self-reported chronic illnesses among elderly were hypertension 22%, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases 19%, diabetes 15%, cardiac problems and joint problems 11 %. Further, 21% had hearing impairment and 11% had vision impairment. Concerning the functional impairment, 51% were partially dependent in performing some of the activities of daily living. Conclusions: Physical health problems that hypertension, chronic pulmonary diseases, diabetes, joint problems are the common. Functional impairment is higher among increased age elderly. Psychological health problems such as cognitive impairment and depression are identified. Experiences of being abused by the family members are also discerned. Hence, it is recommended to plan health promotional strategies for addressing these old age-related health problems. Elderly people should be encouraged to do activities around house or garden that provides glee and light exercise.

A Descriptive Study to Assess the Level of Stress among Elderly People Residing at Old Age Homes, Uttar Pradesh (India)

Aim: This study aimed to determine the level of stress among elderly people in selected old age homes and to find out various factors associated with it. Materials & methods: A quantitative research approach with non-experimental survey design was used to conduct the study in selected Old age homes of Uttar Pradesh. Non-probability purposive sampling technique was employed to select 30 elders. A standardized Perceived Stress Scale containing 10 items were used for assessing the level of stress among the subjects. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 25. Results: The majority of 46.7% elders who reside at old age homes had moderate stress followed by 30% high level of stress and 23.3% low stress. There was an association found between the levels of stress among the elder people with their pattern of communication with the family members (x 2 =14.7, p=0.001). Conclusion: The study concluded that the majority of elderly population in old age homes had moderate levels of stress. There is a need to organize any interventional packages to improve the physical and psychological health of elderly.

Coping Strategies Among Pakistani Elderly Coping in Everyday Life and in Stressful Conditions

The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to probe into the coping strategies adopted by the elderly residing in community in the everyday life and stressful conditions. Interview schedule was used as the tool of data collection. Equal representation was given to elderly male and female in sample of 624 elderly aged 60+ using multi stage sampling technique. The results show that majority of the respondents used company of age fellows, household duties, and prayer as coping strategies to deal with the routine life disengagement. In case of illness, loss of roles and status, stress, misbehaviour of family and in problematic situation, majority of the respondents reported the involvement in emotional coping like aggressive behaviour, isolation, depressed feeling, restricted family interaction, seeking social support and remaining silent to compromise the situation, while a small fraction adopted problem solving coping. Moreover, the finding of study revealed that female elderly are using more emotional coping than male elderly; they are more prone to the spiritual coping (recitation of Holly Quran, offer prayers) to seek social support.
