The contribution of mapping to the study of oral societies : the example of the Celts in the Iron Age.— Spatial analysis exists in archaeology on every scale. European oral societies, from Egypt to Scandinavia, were dated through the analysis of deposits of indigenous objects associated with imports. Cultural groups are identified by the geographical distribution of objects, architectural styles and funerary practices. They are studied to highlight influences without population movements. Economics is not the only explanation; trade is also guided by aristocratic relations or the fashion for banquets. However, political events do not leave mappable traces.
