The Influence of the Ion Exchange Membrane Type on the Separation Performance (original) (raw)

This paper is focused on diversifying the areas of ion exchange membranes, by the synthesis of a three new materials: poly monobromide 2,6-dimethyl 1,4-phenyleoxide (PPOBr), sulfonated polyetheretherketone (SPEEK) and sulfonated polysulfone (PSS). The structures and characteristics of polymers give membrane materials special properties imposed by electro-membrane applications: lower electrical resistance, higher ionic permselectivity, high mechanical resistance, dimensional stability, chemical stability throughout pH range and high thermal stability. The membranes obtained from PPOBr, SPEEK and PSS were characterized by specific methods to highlight their performances, comparatively with commercial membranes (Nafioncationic and Excellion TM -anionic exchange membrane) which are very expensive membranes.
