Attitude towards the Elderly among Healthcare Related Students in Malaysia

The focus of this study was to determine the attitude towards the elderly among healthcare related students in Malaysia. The Cross-sectional survey design (CSD) was used for the study. A total of 63 nursing students and 456 medicine students were drawn by stratified random sampling from University Putra Malaysia. Data was collected using a validated modified standard questionnaire consisting of socio-demographic characteristics, Kogan’s Attitude Towards Old People Scale, Facts on Ageing Quiz 2, filial responsibility questionnaire, experience living with elderly questions as well as questions on exposure to geriatric module. Data generated were subjected to statistics of frequency count, percentage and chi-square. The results showed that the mean attitude score was 37.82± 5.641 with overall attitude being negative (52.0%). Influence of medical education on students' attitudes towards the elderly

As life expectancy increases, the elderly population grows accordingly. Today, physicians interface with elderly patients more frequently and, therefore, geriatric education should be a part of medical training. Examining medical students' knowledge and attitudes about elderly will provide valuable information in planning the geriatric education in medical school. The aim of this study is to determine and compare the attitudes and knowledge of class-1, -4 and -6 Turkish medical students about the elderly. To study the explicit and implicit attitudes of students of University towards persons with disability (PwD). The purposive sample included a total of N= 93 participants age ranging from 18 to 21 years old [males (n)= 47, females (n)= 46 females]. A survey research design was used for data collection. Multidimensional Attitudes Scale towards Persons with Disabilities (MAS) and Attitude toward Disabled Persons Scale (ATDP; Yuker, Block, & Younng, 1966) were taken to measure attitudes. The objectives were (i) To study the attitudes of University students towards people with disability; and (ii) To compare the attitude difference between men and women towards disability. The results obtained indicated no relation between explicit and implicit attitudes of the University students towards PwD. There were no significant gender differences among University students towards PwD. There was no significant gender differences found among University students towards PwD about the cognitive aspect of implicit attitude. Significant differences were found in the affective and behaviour aspect of implicit attitude in males than females among University students towards PwD.

Investigation Of The Attitudes Of Unıversity Students To Discriminaton of Elderly

OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to determine the attitudes of university students studying in different fields toward discrimination of the elderly. METHODS: This descriptive study was conducted with students who were still studying in the 2015-2016 period. A sample size of 416 students was determined by the stratified sampling method, and students were selected by simple random sampling. Data were collected using an identifying information form and an Age Discrimination Attitude Scale (ADAS) by face-toface interview. Statistical analysis was performed using the program SPSS 20.0. RESULTS: The mean total ADAS score of students was 67.7±6.0. The total ADAS scores and the scores of male students on limiting the life of the elderly was significantly higher than those of female students (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: It was determined that university students studying in different fields have a positive attitude toward the elderly. Action must be taken to remove discrimination of the elderly, and policies must be developed to increase social sensitivity.

Students'attitudes toward disability are important, because, young people, and, in ithis context, the students represent the future of the country and their attitudes toward disability affect the process of social integration of disabled people. For the realization of this study it is used the technique of questionaire. The measuring instrument is the SADP (Scale of Attitudes Toward Disabled Persons) scale to measure students' attitudes. The questionnaire is fulfilled from students of the Faculty of Educational Sciences and Faculty of Economics. The paper aims to measure the mean attitude scores on the SADP scale of students of these faculties of the University "Luigj Gurakuqi" of Shkodër city. The aper aims, also, to analyze the impact of specific academic programme on mean SADP score of students. The data collected from the questionnaires was analyzed by means of the SPSS program, variant 20. It is used the analysis of variance Anova table and eta to examine the impact of specific academic programme on students'attitude toward disability. There are given the appropriate conclusions. The attitude of students of the Faculty of Educational Sciences and Faculty of Economics toward disability is favourable. The type of the specific academic programme doesn't impact their attitude toward disability. The students have positive opinion about the capability of disable individuals to adjust to a life outside an institutional setting. The students think that disabled people should have the opportunity for gainful employment and that they should have equal employment opportunities. The students haven't positive opinion about the integration of disabled children in schoool.

Introduction: Turkey is the second most rapidly aging country in the world which requires reconsideration of planning and healthcare services related to the health state of the older people. For qualified healthcare services, positive attitudes and behaviours of health professionals (physicians, nurses, physiotherapists etc.) towards older people beginning from the undergraduate period carry utmost importance. The aim of this study was to determine the attitudes and behaviour of physiotherapy students training in different regions of Turkey towards older people. Comprehensive care towards geriatric health can be sustained by having good knowledge and attitude among the providers. Hence, this research aims to measure the knowledge and attitude of the final year medical students towards geriatric health and determine the associated factors. A cross-sectional study was conducted among the students using structured questionnaires of Geriatric-Attitude-Scale and Palmore-Facts-on-Aging-Quiz was used. Data was analysed using Mann Whitney U test, Chi square test and Spearman correlation coefficient analysis for the association between the score and studied variables. Median score of students' knowledges is at 14.00 (IQR 13.00) and mean score for attitude is 48.52 (+5.53) respectively. Place of residence (P= 0.01) and presence of grandparents (P= 0.04) were the significant factors that affected knowledge of students towards geriatrics while number of siblings (P= 0.05) influenced attitudes of students towards geriatrics. Improvement of current geriatric curriculum should be done with more refined implementation of gerontology course in the basic medical learning.

The Impact of Students' Age on their Attitudes Toward Disability - the Albania's Case

Children attitudes toward their disabled peers impact the process of scholastic integration of children with special needs. The study aimed to measure the impact of childrens'age on their attitudes towards disability. The paper examined the impact of the age in Albanian childrens'attitudes toward their peers with disabilities. In the study participated 1050 students. Based on the analysis of the data, it resulted that the attitude of pupils towards their peers with disabilities was positive. Affective components and behavioral ones were favorable, while the cognitive component was not favorable. There is a significant relationship between different classes in the general attitude of students. There is a significant relationship between different classes in the affective and behavioral components of students attitude. So, there is not a significant relationship between different classes in the behavioral component attitude of students. There are given some recommendations in order to promote positive attitudes towards pupils with disabilities and to improve the process and structure of learning.

Attitude of healthcare professionals gives big influence towards self-esteem of people with disabilities. Not treated with respect, not equipped with suitable equipment, and denied health services are some problems encountered by people with disabilities in healthcare setting. Profession, age, gender, years of working experience, and contact with people with disabilities are factors that would affect their attitudes.
