ICFAI University Press, 2008
This is a review of the entrepreneurial environment and female entrepreneurship in Greece with special reference to family transferred business and self-starting entrepreneurs, approached first through the analysis of the existing bibliography and then through the presentation and analysis of data exploring personal characteristics and motivation, drawn mainly from three similarly designed surveys, covering the period 1990-2000. Findings suggest it is important that women entrepreneurs not be treated as a monolithic category; rather policies and programs to support them should begin with a diagnosis of their personal characteristics and motives aimed at strengthening pull motives that comprise a base for more viable and innovative entrepreneurial activity. The paper's originality lays in its review of the Greek situation, adding more evidence of the characteristics of women entrepreneurs (self started and successors of family businesses), in a different setting.
Female employment and entrepreneurship : career choice trends in Greece
European Research Studies Journal, 2005
A fundamental issue in entrepreneurial research is women’s vocational choice as it affects entrepreneurial intentions regarding traditional vs. nontraditional sectors. Present trends in female entrepreneurship in Greece were investigated using official national databases regarding newly registered firms. A considerable change in women’s vocational patters towards entrepreneurship was evident although traditional trends seemed to persist and the majority of newly founded female enterprises were in the service sector. However, a marked increase in the number of women who pursue careers in technical occupations points towards new directions for female employment away from traditional roles and more compatible with their personal aspirations.
Entrepreneurial efficacy and orientation in Greece: exploring the gender gap
International Journal of Innovation and Regional Development, 8 (3), 197 – 213, 2018
The aim of this article is to observe the expected 'gender gap' in entrepreneurship in Greece. Drawing upon entrepreneurial literature which has revealed certain differences between male and female entrepreneurs, or prospective entrepreneurs and the wide fostering of the entrepreneurial mindset through formal or informal educational settings during the last years, the survey seeks to examine persistent gender differences. The survey analysed responses to a questionnaire from local graduates and practitioners of a Greek region. The prevalence of male entrepreneurs, or nascent entrepreneurs, was verified along with the elimination of gender differences regarding self-confidence in entrepreneurial tasks as a result of educational interventions. Nonetheless, the expected higher need for independence than financial rewards for females was not verified, indicating a homogeneous entrepreneurial orientation between the genders. The study revealed gender differences in normative beliefs, competitiveness and entrepreneurial identity that could be attributed to the Greek culture. The latter characteristics are the most resistant to change through educational interventions compared with entrepreneurial self-efficacy and knowledge. The implications of the findings concern policies and educational interventions towards empowering female entrepreneurship.

South-Eastern Europe Journal of Economics, 2019
This paper shows results of a study on entrepreneurial intentions in Greece in times of a major and prolonged economic crisis, with a focus on the dimension of gender. The paper provides insights about drivers and barriers that affect intentions of becoming an entrepreneur. Results show relatively low intention of starting a business, whereas personal attitudes toward becoming an entrepreneur and perceived desirability are high. Furthermore, economic barriers, public policy barriers and business risk barriers towards undertaking entrepreneurial activities are considered to be highly important as compared to personal barriers. As far as gender is concerned, results show that, generally speaking, male and female potential entrepreneurs are quite similar in their motivation towards entrepreneurship during turbulent times.
