Critical education as an attempt to question the dominant habitus through the educational system
Studia z Teorii Wychowania
In the article, I analyze the role of education in the prevailing system of neoliberal capitalism. On the one hand, it is used by the dominant culture characteristic for the upper classes to imprint appropriate ideological assumptions in the minds of students. On the other hand, there is strong resistance to the practices of subordination and implementation of the logic of the prevailing system. Illich's concept of deschooling society recognizes that compulsory education should be abolished. Critical educators such as Henry Giroux and Peter McLaren argue that the resistance present in the school testifies to the possibility of using the school to shape critical citizens capable of defending democracy. In my article, I argue that it is possible to partially free oneself from the logic of the dominant culture and to partially emancipate the habituses characteristic of the lower classes. However, it is not my goal to illustrate the ideas present in the theories under analysis by re...
Battle for Minds. Elements of Critical Pedagogy - Text
2022
My article 'Battle for Minds. Elements of Critical Pedagogy' was published on the Analele Universitatii din Craiova, Seria Filosofie, nr. 49 (1/2022), pp. 129–144. The printed format of this essay can be consulted on the website address: https://cis01.central.ucv.ro/analele\_universitatii/filosofie/ In my study, I concentrate my attention on some aspects of Freire’s thought on pedagogy. I analyse some aspects of Freire’s opposition between his model of pedagogy and the banking model of education, i.e. the oppressor pedagogy: the bank education’s goal is to establish and conserve a hierarchical society; the problem-posing education aims to establish an egalitarian society and eliminate oppression forms. The concepts of anthropology which underlie the two pedagogical systems are quite different from each other: bank education views individuals as complete entities, i.e., as entities whose essence is given once and for all, whereas problem-posing education sees individuals as self-transcending entities and thus as entities who develop and change in history. I then analyse Freire’s investigation on the mechanism of internalisation: internalisation is the process through which oppressed individuals are transformed into entities mentally directed by the oppressors. It corresponds to the complete assimilation of the mind of the oppressed to the mind of the oppressor. The oppressed are therewith transformed into replicas of the ideology of the oppressors. The text of Freire which I use for my investigation is Pedagogy of the oppressed. Keywords: Freire, critical pedagogy, banking model of education, autonomy, internalisation, freedom.

Teaching Education, 2018
As editors of the special issue in Teaching Education titled "What Is To Be Done with Curriculum and Educational Foundations’ Critical Knowledges? New Qualitative Research on Conscientizing Preservice and In-Service Teachers," our purpose with this conceptual essay is twofold. First, we historicize and characterize the critical knowledges deployed in this special issue as a broad array of criticalities. Second, we provide a reading of these criticalities that together we tentatively call critical and decolonizing education sciences. In our discussion and conclusion, we focus on the dual challenges of developing work in critical and decolonizing education sciences: (a) better historicizing academic work and (b) clearly responding to demands of institutional praxis.
(Un) Critical Pedagogy: Current Priorities and Prospects of Development
Journal of Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian National University
The article highlights the relevance of the problems of critical pedagogy, associated with the name of the Brazilian scientist Paulo Freire (60s of the XX century), who promotes problem-oriented learning, anthropological interpretation of culture, and concepts of humanity. The main content of the concept of critical pedagogy is highlighted due to the necessity to overcome stereotypes regarding the organization of pedagogical education and teaching in an educational institution based on oppression, humiliation, and (non) recognition of differences, in particular linguistic and cultural. It has been revealed that followers of Freire’s ideas regarding critical pedagogy emphasize the principles of equality and justice, understanding/acceptance of various issues that are debatable or in need of public criticism (repression and resistance in higher education, teaching, and consumerism, issues of transsexuality and transgenderism, etc.). The author extrapolates the main principles of criti...
Paulo Freire Critical Pedagogy and its Implications in Curriculum Planning
Journal of Education and Practice, 2014
This study tries to investigate Paulo Freire critical pedagogy and its implications in curriculum planning. Freire critical pedagogy, which has been influenced by Frankfort School, has introduced a new approach in contemporary educational issues. Freire lays a particular emphasis on the role of critical understanding to remove deprivation and injustice from societies. He also believes that development of an educational plan, which is in line with the redeemer education, can pave the hopeful way for a basic evolution in education. The present study, first reviews the history of Freire critical pedagogy, then it introduces philosophical fundamentals of Freire critical pedagogy, and explains some principles of curriculum planning based on Freire critical pedagogy. There are several important principles in Freire curriculum planning. These include attention to traditional and indigenous context of society, coaches' and students' participation in educational plan development, attention to the political position of education in curriculum planning, the role of cultural segments in curriculum planning, and the direct relationship between curriculum planning and economic production process. Also educating adults with focus on giving education to emancipatory people is considered as one of the main priorities of Freire's curriculum planning.
