Rethinking Sustainability within the Viticulture Realities Integrating Economy, Landscape and Energy
Sustainability
Sustainability is often explained through three dimensions (society, economy and environment). However, such a definition currently appears to be restricted. Sustainable development often includes the energy issue. An example of realities founded on bioenergy are agro-energy districts. These realities involve all the three dimensions of sustainability, integrating also the energy dimension and fueling a potential circular economy. Based on these premises, the most affluent rural subdivision in Italy is that of wine. The wine sector has experienced a recent growth of its economic market, diverging from other agricultural activities and enlarging its cultivated surface areas. In this sense, the local landscape has also changed. Owing to the strong inclination of the wine sector in adopting sustainable strategies and measures, agro-energy districts can be the following future phase in viticulture realities as a cutting-edge business in the modern agricultural sector, implementing new strategies and opportunities.

The future is moving towards an energy system different from the current one: highly efficient, renewable and immediate. For this reason, it is necessary to promote innovative technologies to pursue the development of a green economy connected to the environmental sustainability and the reduction of food waste. This study lays the basis of a different approach on the interaction between solar production and bio enhancement of organic residual flows of a fruit and vegetable market in Southern Italy. The proposed method consists in the installation of a photovoltaic system to cover the energy needs, including the electricity demand for the use of forklifts. This innovation is linked to the sustainable management of residual agri-food waste that, properly treated, allows the production of a soil improver usable in the early stages of the product life cycle. This paper investigates the energy and economic performance of several energy schemes that could potentially be applied to agricultural and zootechnical communities contributing to the international objectives of sustainable development. The proposed energy schemes involve integrated energy efficiency technologies and novel system layouts aiming at reaching the zero-energy goal at a community level, by considering collective energy actions with provision of benefits for members and stakeholders. The proposed scenarios include different innovative technologies, such as anaerobic digestion, cogeneration, biogas upgrading, solar, district heating and cooling. These layouts are modelled in TRNSYS simulation environment to perform dynamic simulations and parametric analyses of the pivotal system parameters. Such analyses are conducted to find out the best scenario and the size of its system components which optimize different energy and economic objective functions. To assess the feasibility of all proposed scenarios and energy schemes, as well as to investigate the potential of the developed models, proposed scenarios are studied for an existing community. This existing agricultural community named ''La Bellotta'', is served through different technologies, including a gas fuelled co-generator and an anaerobic biodigester. Simulation results show that the investigated scenarios allow for achieving very high self consumption ratios of energy produced onsite (from 57 to 100%), high economic performance (measured by the profitability index up to 1.35 for the best investigated scenario) and environmental benefits. The case study provides examples of energy schemes in which citizens and communities have a major benefit to invest in projects including renewables technologies, energy efficiency, and positive energy services.
Analysis of Sustainable Energy Systems in Ecovillages: A Review of Progress in

This paper explores sustainable energy systems in ecovillages based on the concept of the Zero Energy Building. The cases discussed in this paper include BedZED in the United Kingdom and Masdar City in the Middle East. These two communities contain features characterized by the sus-tainable principles of the ecovillage concept by using renewable energy and reclaimed materials to reach a low/zero energy system in buildings. The creation of more ecovillages and the growth of current ecovillages play an important role in positively solving environmental and social prob-lems. The low energy buildings in the ecovillages also act as a model for communities wishing to implement sustainable development.
Energy analysis of organic horticultural farms in Italy

The aim of this research is to evaluate energy efficiency of organic horticultural farms in Italy at both surface (GJ/GJ ha -1 year -1 ) and product (kg MJ -1 ) level. The methods used is the Output/Input balance at farm level using energy equivalents of the three phases: production, transformation/conservation and marketing. The methodology have been applied to 8 case studies of the organic horticultural Italian sector. The results show that the energy input is low but also the energy efficiency is not high especially if compared to other study of the arable sector. However they show very positive aspects in the commercial phase.
Aspect regarding the use of renewable energy into vegetable farms of agritouristic pensions

The main goal in the agritouristic pension design is that tourists can consume organic plant products produced in the guest house farm or its immediate neighborhood. This paper aims are on one hand to design a vegetable farm based on the necessity of specific products needed for the operation of a medium pension with 9 rooms, and secondly to assess the possibility of using photovoltaic energy for powering the micro-drip irrigation system. Starting from the amount of vegetable needs for tourists from an average agritouristic pension, it was calculated the number of plants, the required surface for the plants and the amount of water needed. Based on daily and monthly needs there were established technical and constructive parameters of the solar drip irrigation installation (diameter and length of hoses, flow, pressure and pump power and solar panel characteristics). The model can be easily adapted to other size pensions or to different climatic conditions.

Mediterranean rural settlements suffer from numerous environmental challenges, specifically the annual decrease of the farmlands, climate change threats, and growing resource consumption and demand, such as energy, the core of development. Rural areas play a significant role in achieving food security and sustainable development. Therefore, this paper promotes the energy community and agrivoltaic key concepts as pillars to show how buildings and farms’ land uses positively impact the ecosystem. The study focused on Egypt and Italy as representatives of the entire region. Two rural settlements with the same characteristics representing typical agriculture-based patterns have been selected: Lasaifar Albalad, representing 339 villages in the Delta Region, northern Egypt, and Pontinia, representing rural typologies of the 1930s in the Lazio Region, central Italy. Then, two focus groups with versatile stakeholders were conducted. The results showed the juxtaposition of the key concepts and national rural and agricultural policies and fostered a novel approach between Egypt and Italy. The study presented the first analysis of both contexts. The focus groups promoted the ideas, led to a better understanding of the implementation possibilities, raised awareness, improved social acceptance, and highlighted the significant barriers. It paved the way for a further study (micro-scale on-ground practices) to be planned and implemented soon.
Holistic Energy Concepts for Eco-communities_SELECT
The nal report for the Integrated Project of the Year (IP) 2012-2013 under the purview of the course Environomical Pathways for Sustainable Energy Systems has been compiled in order to present the work accomplished by the project group Holistic Energy Concepts for Eco-communities (HEC) in the second phase of the project. Therefore, even though this report is comprehensive in itself and covers all the aspects of the project, yet for more detailed information on certain aspects it is advised to be read in conjunction with the HEC Intermediate Report submitted in December 2012.
Hotels with Net Zero Carbon Emissions in the Mediterranean Region: Are They Feasible?

Various, reliable, mature and cost-effective renewable energy technologies are broadly used today for heat, cooling and power generation. The Mediterranean basin is a well-developed tourism destination area with various abundant renewable energy sources. In the current era of sustainable development and climate change, the creation of net zero carbon emissions hotels is a challenge for improving overall sustainability. Low carbon emission hotels can be achieved with the combined use of various renewable energy technologies. Use of solar thermal energy, solar photovoltaic energy and high efficiency heat pumps generating heat, cooling and electricity in Mediterranean hotels could zero their carbon emissions due to energy use. Alternatively solid biomass, if available, could be used for heat production. Although these technologies are currently reliable and cost-effective, with many applications in all sectors, various barriers hinder their promotion in hotels in the Mediterranean area. Taking into account though the fact that many tourists prefer to stay in green hotels and that the use of these technologies results in many economic and environmental benefits, it is expected that in the future the use of renewable energy technologies will be promoted in Mediterranean hotels, reducing their carbon footprint.
