Sustainable Industry, Culture and Community Development: A Case Study of Kampung Batik Laweyan, Indonesia

This study aims to identify and analyse the sustainability factors of the batik industry in Kampung Batik Laweyan (KBL) in Surakarta and the way these factors relate to and shape successful local community development. Cross-sectional data collection was conducted through a survey questionnaire, involving 511 respondents that comprised 254 enterprises and 257 community members, selected through stratified random sampling techniques. This study used path analysis to examine the hypothetical model. The results of the path analysis support our hypothetical model in which industrial sustainability factors, i.e., economic, environmental, and social factors have a positive and significant relationship with the sustainability of batik enterprises in KBL. The sustainability of the batik enterprise has a positive and significant relationship with the well-being of the community and social capital. This study also proves that the influence of enterprises' sustainability on social capital was highly influenced by local culture. This, however, cannot be proven when the culture is linked to the relationship between the enterprises' sustainability and community well-being. Overall, this study concludes that the way sustainability of the batik industry in KBL contributes towards community development is also influenced by local cultural factors, particularly the social capital of the community.

Environmental Management Practices in Small Batik Industry in Kelantan, Malaysia

Environmental Performance and Stakeholders’ Pressure Against the Small Batik Enterprises in Kelantan, Malaysia

The aims of this paper are to investigate environmental performance as well as stakeholders’ pressure against Batik enterprises in Kelantan. Based on the survey of 36 small Batik entrepreneurs, only 5 enterprises (13.5%) achieved high environmental performance and the rest (86.5%) were categorised as low environmental performance enterprises. These findings come as no surprise because the majority of Batik enterprises perceived low pressure from stakeholders, including regulatory pressure which usually exerts high pressure on businesses in other industries in Malaysia and other countries. The conclusion of this study is instructive, demanding the players in the industry to be environmentally proactive; however, this does not come easily unless they will be rewarded as being environmentally friendly and will pay heavy consequences of not being so.

Environmental Awareness of Batik Entrepreneurs in Kelantan, Malaysia – An Early Insight

In reality small businesses significantly responsible to environmental degradations because they pay no or little attention towards environment issues as they are preoccupied with matters pertaining to daily business operation as well their limitations in various resources. In Malaysia, batik industry is classified under handicraft product that contributes significantly to the economy of Malays, but the industry has poor environmental record. Yet until recently, issues pertaining to environmental awareness of small business entrepreneurs are under research. In order to fill this academic gap this research aim to investigate awareness of entrepreneurs on environmental issues exacerbated by their businesses. This study utilized in-depth interviews with three entrepreneurs in the industry in Kelantan. Overall, the results of the study found that Batik entrepreneurs had some awareness on environmental issues pertaining to natural environment, but depend on individual. The finding of this research is informative, warrants further efforts from various stakeholders to increase awareness of Batik entrepreneurs on environmental issues because it is considered a perquisite for environmentally friendly practices in the industry.

Manufacturing Sustainability and Sustainable Community Development in Kampung Batik Laweyan Surakarta

This study aims to examine the influence of economic, environmental, and social factors on manufacturing sustainability, which subsequently affects community development as reflected by well-being and social capital. The research was conducted at Kampung Batik Laweyan, one of the oldest batik industry communities in Indonesia. Data were obtained using questionnaires and analyzed using Structural Equation Model (SEM). The results showed that economic, environmental, and social factors significantly influence manufacturing sustainability, community well-being, and social capital. It also shows that the presence of the batik industry largely determines the existence of the Kampung Batik Laweyan community as a manifestation of the stability of the Triple Bottom Line concept, namely, economic, environmental, and social factors. This study is expected to be a model for interested parties in preserving the existence of Laweyan as a batik village in Indonesia.

Sustainable Competitive Advantage of SMEs through Resource and Institutional-Based Management: An Empirical Study of Batik SMEs in Central Java, Indonesia

Motives And Green Innovation Performance in Indonesian Small and Medium Enterprises (Sme's) Batik -A Qualitative Case Study

Background of the study: Currently, SMEs are still facing various environmental problems so that they continue to receive special attention in the academic field. Furthermore, the role of the business world, society and government is needed to pay more attention to the environmental and social impacts on companies in order to increase efficiency and reduce risks to the condition of society and the environment. Objectives: This study explores the positive influence of green motifs on the green innovation performance of Batik SMEs by examining three green motifs (instrumental motives, relational motives and moral motives). This qualitative research was conducted by analyzing data from interviews conducted with representatives of UKM Batik Pekalongan, Indonesia with samples in various regions in order to obtain data variations and data accuracy, so that the results can be generalized. Finding: This study reveals the results that instrumental motives have the strongest influence on green innovation performance compared to moral motives and relational motives. But the three still have a positive relationship. Relational motives are generally the main motivation for companies to achieve green innovation performance. Conclusion: This study describes the motives of batik SMEs in carrying out green activities (instrumental motives, relational motives, and moral motives). These three motifs have the opportunity to improve the performance of green innovation in batik SMEs. The conclusion of this finding is that companies tend to do something above the main goal, seek profit or prefer to produce something useful for the company and support something related to social activities.

Sustainability Status of Batik Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) in Jember Regency

Sustainable development is a development that seeks to fulfill the current need, without decreasing the futures generation's ability to fulfill their needs. There are three main reasons why economic development must be sustainable, namely economic theory, socio-environmental, social inequalities [2]. This purposes of this reseacrh was to determine the sustainability status of Batik Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) in Jember Regency in terms of ecological, economic and social dimensions. The method used in this research is multidimensional scaling (MDS) analysis with the Rap-fish (Rapid Appraissal for Fisheries) method. The results of the analysis show that the status of sustainability in the ecological dimension with a sustainability index of 63.07, economy with a sustainability index of 73.22 and social with a sustainability index of 66.97 are in the position of a moderately sustainable ordination scale. Meanwhile, a multidimensional analysis shows that the sustainability status of Jember Batik SME is in a fairly sustainable status with a sustainability status index of 67.7 so it means that to maintain and improve the sustainability status it is necessary to improve the attributes that affect the improvement of the sustainability status.

The availablity of Information technology in IR 4.0 demands the ability of SMEs to build a culture to foster competitiveness. This study aims to test a model to improve Sustainability Competitive Advantage based on Innovation Culture, Adaptation Capability and IT Adoption. This type of research uses explanatory research, to test the proposed hypothesis. Data was collected from 106 Batik SMEs owner of Central Java and Yogyakarta through a questionnaire and analysis using SmartPLS. The results shows that SMEs need to strive for the development of an Innovation Culture, in the form of creating new product and services and finding new market opportunities for running their business. Innovation Culture is useful for fostering adaptability in the form of creating change, focusing on services, and developing knowledge. The Innovation Culture that has been formed also has an impact on the ability to apply information technology, namely relative advantage, adaptability, and practicality. Adaptation Capability and Technology Information Adoption that has been formed in SMEs, can help to increase Competitive Advantage so that it continues, marked by increased cost reduction, differentiation and quality.
