Exploring Gender differences in attitude towards Mathematics at Secondary Level in Pakistan

This study was aimed to find out the attitude towards mathematics which were communicating gender difference among secondary level students. A quantitative research approach was used to explore gender difference in relation to the attitude towards mathematics among nine graders. Fifty seven public sector schools in Lahore were selected for this research. All nine graders in public sector secondary schools were target population of current study. Eleven hundred and eighty six students were selected through multistage random sampling for present research. A questionnaire developed by the researcher was used for exploration of gender difference in relation to students’ attitude towards mathematics at secondary level in Pakistan. It was a Lekert Scale with five points on it. The questionnaire was pilot tested and validated by experts. This study investigated the comparison of male and female Senior Secondary School students’ attitude towards mathematics. The study employed descriptive research design of the survey type. The population for the study consisted of all senior secondary school students in Ekiti state, Nigeria. The sample for the study was six hundred [600] senior secondary school students consisting of 300 males and 300 females selected from 12 senior secondary schools using multistage, stratified and purposive random sampling techniques .The mathematics attitude scale constructed and validated by the researchers was adopted and used as instrument for gathering data . The study shows that the attitude of students towards mathematics did not depend upon sex. Therefore, it is recommended that sex should not be considered as a factor influencing the attitude of students towards mathematics and those teachers should teach mathematics freely among the students of different sexes.

This study was carried out in order to determine how students’ attitudes towards mathematics changed according to their school and grade levels, and to examine which factors affected students’ attitudes from the views of students and teachers. This study was conducted with 698 primary third to eighth grade students, 367 of whom were male and 331 of whom were female and 6 mathematics teachers studying in those schools. Data of the study were collected by means of two instruments, Mathematics Attitudes Scale (MAS) and semi-structured interview. Obtained data were analyzed both statistically and descriptively. At the end of the study, it was observed that there is a meaningful difference in students’ attitudes towards mathematics according to schools. In addition, it was observed that attitudes of students enrolled to primary schools which consist of 3rd, 4th and 5th grades are meaningfully more positive than the attitudes of students enrolled to secondary schools consisting of 6th, 7t...
Effective Attitude of Secondary School Students Towards Mathematics

The present study attempts to assess the attitudes of secondary school students towards Mathematics. To the study, the researcher has adopted convenient sampling method. Both male and female students constitute the population under study. A questionnaire has been administered by the researcher on a total of 60 students studying in State Board Schools in Mumbai namely Rizvi Springfield High School, Shri. V.V.K. Sharma High School & Bandra Hindu Association High School. The data collected has been analysed using mean which is a measure of central tendency. The results are presented graphically and interpreted thereof. The findings suggest that most of the students have a positive attitude towards the subject while only a certain percentage of the students are not in favour of the subject.

There are some problems with a negative mathematical attitude towards the very large number of students that contribute to academic success. In the current context in which our nation is going, we need new teaching methods that can be helpful in solving our problems. It is necessary bring them vision in the right direction from different angles of attitude towards mathematics and to achieve the levels of mathematical success. In this study an attempt has been taken to understand the statistical gains about mathematical attitudes in relation to mathematical achievement. We conducted a survey of 122 students in class VIII to class X in high school (Students 'Academy, Kolkata. 'Attitudes to Mathematics Questionnaire' were taken from "A Modified Fennema-Sherman Mathematics Attitude Scale (MFAS) (1980)" was conducted for 122 students and "Attitude Towards Mathematics Inventory (ATMI) (1996)" to obtain from 90 students and feedback collected and taken from the "Educational Outcome" of 91 high school students. The results showed that the attitude was positively and significantly improved in mathematics studies where no significant differences were found between the different grades of high school students. The gender difference was found to be insignificant for attitude and mathematical achievement. So it can be concluded that attitude and mathematical achievement are positively correlated and gender difference is equally unaffected for mathematical performance.

The purpose of this study was to investigate senior high school female students' attitude towards the learning of Mathematics. The study was grounded in a positivist paradigm, using adescriptive case study design. Simple random sampling technique was used to select 161 female students. The results indicated that female students had less self-assurance when performing Mathematical tasks. The students were uncertain about whether motivation could change their attitude toward learning Mathematics. The female students were less enthusiastic about Mathematics. The students understood the value of Mathematics and how it applied to all facets of life. The students' knowledge of the importance of mathematics was a strong predictor of their positive attitudes toward learning Mathematics. The implication of the study to teaching and learning is that teachers should use instructional strategies that would meet the needs of female students. Teachers must take into account students' differences or barriers to learning, minimise anxiety, boost active interest, and appreciate what is being taught and learned.Teachers need to take corrective action to ease stress and offer their female students the assistance they need.

The present study was conducted with an objective to identify the relation between the attitudes of students towards mathematics with their performance in mathematics. Based on the survey research design, the study was conducted in a sample of 154 ten grader students. The performances of the students in mathematics were obtained by the school administration whereas their attitudes towards mathematics were determined with the help of survey form entitled ‘Fennema-Sherman Mathematics Attitude Scale’. The survey form was divided into eight categories as attitudes towards success in mathematics, confidence in learning mathematics, mathematics anxiety, motivation in learning mathematics, teacher scale, parents scale, mathematics usefulness and mathematics as a male domain. The study concluded with the positive correlation between the performances of the students with their attitudes towards mathematics.

This study is based on a survey of Higher Secondary school students about their attitudes towards mathematics and its possible effect on achievement in the subject. Students of different streams (Science, Arts and Commerce) constituted the population of this study. The sample consisted of 784 students both male and female of Class XI selected from school in southern district of West Bengal. The tool used was the Modified Fennema Sherman Mathematics Attitude Scale (Depaken, Lawsky and Padwa, 1993). Achievement of Mathematics was measured by the scores in mathematics in the Class X Public Examination. A co-relational study showed that the association between Higher Secondary students' attitude towards mathematics and their achievement in mathematics is high. This indicates that a healthy attitude towards mathematics can augur good performance in mathematics examination. This was found to be particularly true for girls and for students in the Arts stream.
