Fernando Checa Cremades and his extensive team of transcribers and contributors are to be congratula‐ ted on this elegant three volume publication which presents the full text of sixty-three inventories. These documents record a significant percentage of the worldly goods of Charles V and eight of other members of the extended Habsburg family. The significance of the imperial family who did much to shape 15th and 16th century European politics can be gauged on many levels from these inventories. Charles I: Anatomy of a Regicide
In this thesis, the author contends that the English Civil War and subsequent regicide of Charles I were first and foremost the product of three conditions. The first of these was Henry VIII’s break from Rome. Second, Charles’ flawed personality manifested itself in the form of duplicity and intransigence. Finally, Charles failed to conform himself to the understood character of divine kingship during the period of his reign.
Charles VIII and the Dawn of Military Revolution in the Gunpowder Age
an Italian diplomat and historian, captured the essence of the French invasion's impact on Italy when he remarked, "Charles entered Italy on the ninth day of September in the year 1494, bringing with him the seeds of innumerable calamities and most horrible events, which resulted in significant changes across the entire state of affairs. His passage into Italy not only gave rise to changes in dominions, the subversion of kingdoms, the desolation of countries, the destruction of cities, and the cruelest massacres, but also introduced new fashions, customs, and bloody ways of waging warfare, as well as diseases previously unknown in the region. 1 " This statement resonates deeply with the tumultuous era of the Italian Wars, which heralded the onset of the Gunpowder Revolution, a transformative period in warfare that reshaped military tactics and strategies over centuries.
