MOOC (MASSIVE OPEN ONLINE COURSES) AS AN ADVANCED TECHNIQUE TO STUDY ENGLISH LANGUAGE

This study tries to shed lights on the most updated technique that has been used nowadays to study variety of disciplines and English in particular. MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses) is a trendy term come to exist in the very recent dates, where learners can use technology and internet to learn from vital online recorded or live platforms assured by granted well organized resources or foundations that provide knowledge for free or not. This research tries to investigate the awareness of Iraqi English teachers to MOOCs by making a questionnaire to English language college teachers from different disciplines and universities in Baghdad during the academic year 2018-2019. The sample of this study includes 35 English language college teachers. According to the findings of this study, the researcher considered the weighted mean 50% and 68% as an item that gain low positive attitude from teachers. Consequently, three items were gaining high attitude from teachers.

The emergence of Industrial Revolution 4.0, the online learning mode has increasingly been developed and implemented by all higher institution over the world due to their positive impacts on theeducational system. Online learning systems are viewed as apotentially significant platform for learning and teaching process. Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) has gain attention among educators nowadays. Due to its features,many institutionsas well as in Malaysia started to develop MOOC as learning and teaching platform. Hence, this paper explores the need of Arabic language learners toward using MOOC as a platform for thelearning activity. A set of questionnaire based on students' needs and perceptions was administered to 106 students of Arabic language for anelementary course at Universiti Malaysia Kelantan. The descriptive quantitative analysis was employed to analyze the data by using IBM SPSS statistical software. The results show a positive response in using MOOC as a learning platform due to its flexibility,user-friendly, simplicity, and variousfunctionalities.

MOOCs in Omani Higher Education Institutions: Use and Popularity

Due to the rapid influence of technology on the teaching-learning process, both instructors and students alike are expected to keep abreast of the perpetual developments in the field of education. The introduction of Massive Open Online Courses (Henceforth MOOCs), as one form of e-learning, has made skyrocketing changes in the manner and availability of education provided to mass numbers of learners all the world, including Arab countries. The use of MOOCs in Oman is relatively new, and thus it appears to be unbeknown to a large segment of undergraduate students. The study beforehand, therefore, is meant to explore Omani undergraduate students' awareness of MOOCs both locally and globally via the use a self-administered questionnaire targeting three main academic institutions in Oman with a total number of 306 participants. In-depth scrutiny of the obtained data evidently shows that unfamiliarity of MOOCs among Omani undergraduate students is significantly high, a fact reflected in the high percentage of those oblivious of its existence (88.89%) as opposed to those (11.11 %) who are familiar with MOOCs. Lack of publicity of these platforms in the Omani academic institutions and the academic community in general, among several other reasons, stand behind such unawareness of these platforms.

A study on the awareness and utilisation of MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) as an alternative to formal education

There are many MOOC providers across the globe some the renowned ones include-EDX, Khan Academy, Coursera. There are some indigenously developed MOOC platforms as well such as SWAYAM & NPTEL. Purpose This research paper aims at understanding the level of awareness and the extent of usage of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) by different people. The scope of the research covers the reasons for taking up or not taking up MOOCs as an educational alternative.

Experiment of the Prototype of Online Learning Resources on Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) to Develop Life Skills in Using Technology Media for Hearing Impaired Students

This research aimed to experiment the prototype of online learning resources on Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) to develop life skills in using technology media for hearing impaired students. The research sample were 33 hearing impaired students from Thungmahamek School for the Deaf in secondary school level. Tools included pretest, posttest, and satisfaction assessment form. Data analysis was done by average statistics, standard deviation, and content analysis. The research found that academic achievement scores after the experiment were higher than the scores before the experiment with statistical significance at the level of .05 (t = -12.14, p = .00). The overall students’ satisfaction was at the highest level (X ̅ = 4.53, SD = 0.67). Effectiveness of using massive open online courses (MOOC) in learning Arabic during the COVID-19 pandemic in tertiary institution

Introduction. The COVID-19 pandemic that gripped the world has made significant changes in the professional activities of school teachers and university professors. In the new online format, previously developed lesson plans did not yield the expected results. Arabic language teachers found it especially difficult to present the new grammatical material to the students. In addition to general didactic issues, there are particular problems that have arisen. Teaching Arabic as a foreign language in the first year has several unique characteristics. Students begin learning a completely new oriental language from scratch. In addition, the grammatical system of Arabic differs significantly from the European languages that are known and studied at school and therefore students cannot rely on their previous knowledge of Arabic grammar. Aim. This article aims to study the effectiveness of learning Arabic using the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) media, as a modern and adaptive learning innovation during a pandemic COVID-19 and challenging times, with an independent learning curriculum approach. The application of MOOC in learning Arabic is expected to help institutions, lecturers, and students improve their abilities based on their different learning experiences. This study analyzes students' perceptions of learning Arabic with MOOC media and analyzes the efectiveness of using MOOC media in learning Arabic in tertiary institutions. Method. The research was conducted using an experimental approach with a single-group pretest-posttest design. The research was conducted at the Intensive Arabic Lecture at Malang city Indonesia. Respondents in this study were 87 semester II students taking Arabic Language III courses at tertiary institutions. Results. The results of this study indicate that 78% of students like using MOOC media in learning Arabic. Analysis of student achievement results also shows an increase. The t-test on the results of students' pretest and posttest scores showed a significant level of 0.031<0.05, so using MOOC media in learning Arabic improves student achievement. Practical significance. From the results of this study, it is recommended that tertiary institutions may utilize MOOC media in learning Arabic, especially in uncertain situations such as pandemics and challenging times.

Participant Experience of the First Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) from Pakistan

Background: In recent years, massive open online courses (MOOCs) have steadily gained popularity. It appears, however, that MOOC learners are concentrated mostly in the affluent English-speaking countries. MOOCs’ free-of-cost, easy accessibility should make them obviously attractive to participants from low-and-middle-income countries (LMIC). The reason why LMIC enrollments in MOOCs are so low is therefore unclear. In the year 2014, the first MOOC was launched from Pakistan. We administered a survey to the enrollees of this MOOC to explore concerns, fears, and limitations that might be deterring the LMIC audience from participating in MOOCs.
