Abstract
Tuberculosis (TB) is a serious infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It is an airborne infection which spreads through the air. Not all people who have been infected with TB germs are infectious in their turn however. In fact, only people who have TB in their lungs are infectious. When a person with TB in their lungs coughs or sneezes, or even talks or spits, this expels TB germs, into the air around them. To become infected, a person simply needs to inhale these airborne bacilli. This study was conducted to assess the diagnostic accuracy of Xpert for rifampicin resistance detection where Xpert was used as the initial test, replacing conventional solid culture-based drug susceptibility test. Total of 80 TB patients sputum sample were collected from NIDCH (Indoor and Outdoor) and were comparatively investigated with the new molecular-based Gene Xpert MTB/RIF assay system and conventional solid culture methods.
