The author initially emphasizes the perennial importance of the theological theme of vocation, God's call to man to fulfill his spiritual destiny, which as such is intimately related to the meaning of human existence. In the Old Testament, we read of God's initiatives in summoning man to a fuller existence, to the Covenant and to eternal life. The sacred books therefore, serve as the fundamental document in ascertaining the origin and in finding out the statute of man's vocation. This vocation is brought about and is understood in relation to the history of Israel, the chosen people par excellence. But it is especially shown in the life of men like Adam, Abraham, Moses and David, who for this reason are called by the author «exemplary vocations».
