Estimation of recreational benefits is an important tool for both biodiversity conservation and ecotourism development in national parks and sanctuaries. The design of this work is to estimate the recreational value and to establish functional relationship between travel cost and visitation of Lawachara National Park (LNP) in Bangladesh. This study employed zonal approach of the travel cost method. The work is grounded on a sample of 422 visitors of the LNP. Results showed that the total value of environmental assets of the LNP is 55,694,173 Taka/Year. Moreover, our suggestion based on visitors' willingness to pay is that the park entrance fee of 25 Tk per person should be introduced that could generate revenue approximate 2.3 million Taka/ year, beneficial for the park management and conservation of biodiversity.

One of the basic assumptions of the travel cost method for recreational demand analysis is that the travel cost is always incurred for a single purpose recreational trip. Several studies have skirted around the issue with simplifying assumptions and dropping observations considered as non-conventional holiday-makers or as non-traditional visitors from the sample. The effect of such simplifications on the benefit estimates remains conjectural. Given the remoteness of notable recreational parks, multi-destination or multi-purpose trips are not uncommon. This paper examines the consequences of allocating travel costs to a recreational site when some trips were taken for purposes other than recreation and/or included visits to other recreational sites. Using a multi-purpose weighting approach on data from Gros Morne National Park, Canada, we conclude that a proper correction for multi-destination or multi-purpose trip is more of what is needed to avoid potential biases in the estimated effects of the price (travel-cost) variable and of the income variable in the trip generation equation.
Measuring Recreational Value Using Travel Cost Method (TCM): A Number of Issues and Limitations

This article aims to explain on how the concept of economic value assessment using Travel Cost Method (TCM) can be applied to recreational based tourism locations. By using the Travel Cost Method (TCM) approach, the economic value of a tourism location can be determined even though the attributes of that tourism site are based on recreational features. The concept of economic determination of a tourism location based on Travel Cost Method (TCM) is by the use of individual's travel cost data as a proxy for the recreational value of that tourist location. Consumers' willingness to pay (WTP) for the cost to visit the recreation area is able to show the economic value and importance of a tourism location. The reason is because visitors have to spend money to pay for the costs of travel such as fuel, tolls, parking and the costs during the stay in recreational centre such as accommodation, food and ticket prices should also be considered. However, economic value assessment using Travel Cost Method (TCM) comes with certain issues and limitations. Therefore, this article also discusses the issues and limitations in applying economic value assessment of a tourist location based on Travel Cost Method (TCM).

Using count data models that account for zero-truncation, overdispersion, and endogenous stratification, we estimate the value of access to recreational parks. The focus is on the empirical estimation of the proportion of the wage rate that best approximates park visitors' opportunity cost of travel time within the cost of their trip and its effects on estimated consumer surplus. The fraction of hourly earnings that corresponds to the opportunity cost of travel time is endogenously estimated as a function of visitor characteristics, rather than fixed exogenously. In this case, which deals with a relatively remote recreational site, the relevant opportunity cost of time for most visitors appears to represent a smaller fraction of their wage rate than commonly assumed in previous similar studies.

Recreation is one of the ecosystem's secondary values of a well conserved natural ecosystem, associated with the direct use individuals make of these natural assets. In this paper we define and estimate the total economic recreation value to visitors of a particular natural area, a national park. An on-site individual observation Travel Cost Model, Count Data distributions, and a version of hyperbolic discounting framework distribution were used to estimate a measure for the present recreation use of the site and the total discounted recreation value for a 50 years period. The empirical estimates of the average representative visitor's present equivalent surplus willingness to pay, based on the impact assumption of closure or loss of access to the park were 123 € per day per visit, and 593 € per each average five days length visit, per visitor. These values suggest that recreation use of nature has a higher value than certain economic activities in the area.

Basically, there are two main problems faced in the recreation location especially in outdoor. One side, the rate of visiting some tourism objects is still low until now. It raises an assumption that recreation location doesn’t create any opportunity in regional and domestic economy. On the other hand, undervalue of recreation services, based on the willingness to pay caused a very low attractiveness of investment in tourism objects. To solve these problems, one should be able to predict the number of recreation location demand, so that a good planning and development could be implemented in this estimated area. Nameri National Park (NNP) is a beautiful place, located in the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas in the Sonitpur district of the state of Assam. For public parks and sanctuaries, the usual market mechanism fails to provide the true appraise of economic value. For proper management and administration of public parks and sanctuaries in the developing countries like India, there is an urgent need to estimate the true economic value of these assets. In the present study we examine the influence of various socio-economic variables of the visitors like age, sex, educational attainment, distance, visitation rate, marital status and level of income on the willingness to pay (WTP) for the conservation of tourism resources of Nameri National Park of Assam.
