Wireless LAN Security: The IEEE 802.11 Risks and Technical Challenges
Abstract— Wireless local area networks (LANs) are playing a major role in the information technology revolution. They have found their way into a wide variety of markets including financial sectors, corporations, health care, and education.The rapid deployment of wireless LANs is testimony to the inherent benefits of this technology. Unfortunately, most wireless deployments are, at this time, fundamentally insecure. This is not an exaggeration. It is an accurate assessment of the reality of the current state of the security of wireless 802.11-based environments.Because of its transmission characteristic, many security problems have set in. This paper aims to introduce the security mechanism of the wireless LAN and points out the shortcoming of it. Index Terms—About four key words or phrases in alphabetical order, separated by commas.

An Experimental Study Analysis of Security Attacks at IEEE 802.11 Wireless Local Area Network

IEEE802.11 wireless networks have become one of the most widely used networks. Due to open nature of wireless medium, hackers and intruders can make utilization of the loopholes of the wireless communication; as a result, there are many security threats associated with Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN). In this paper, we have worked an experimental analysis to study some of the well known attacks pertaining to IEEE 802.11 WLAN. At first, some of the open issues related to this fragile technology have been discussed. Based on this vulnerabilities and threats categories some of the major attack has been performed in a live environment by using open source software tools i.e Aircrak-nj, kismet. etc. The analysis and finding from this paper's proved that the complexity of attacks had increased by time and the Wifi technology are becoming more dangerous to the end users and business environment.
Investigation into IEEE 802.11 Security Issues affecting Wireless Network
Wireless networking is one of the exciting developments in the world of networking technology. After the introduction of IEEE 802.11 Ethernet standard, Wi-Fi has become the most widely adopted wireless networking type on the wireless network environment. Since wireless networking is easy to deploy and upgrade and with decent data rate available today at low cost, implementation of wireless networking is growing all over the place. Organizations and enterprises are switching from the traditional wired networks to wireless networking. Wireless can serve in many capacities, from a simple extension to a distribution point. One of the leading glitches with wireless networking is that, the wireless networking devices provide no security as they come out of their boxes. Considering the fact that wireless networks are built on a shared medium and data packets float through the air on radio waves, security cannot be overemphasized when dealing with wireless networking. It is arguable that many network users don't have procedures when they deploy their WLAN for the first time. It is the dearth of procedures that help attackers get into any networks they want. This paper seeks to demystify the security issues of the IEEE 802.11 wireless standards. The paper goes on to address these security concerns and points out the method used to secure a wireless network.

Analysis of Security Issues and Their Solutions In Wireless LAN
—This paper begins by introducing the concept of wireless LAN (WLAN). The introductory section gives brief information on the WLAN components and its architecture. In order to examine the WLAN security threats, this paper will look at both active & passive attacks. The paper will then explain the security & flaws of legacy IEEE802.11 WLAN standards. This situation leads to further research regarding practical solutions in implementing a more secured WLAN. This paper will also cover the new standards to improve the security of WLAN such as the IEEE 802.1x standard, which comprises of three separated sections: Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP), Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP) and 802.1x itself. Then the paper look for a newly proposed standard i.e. 802.11i for key distribution and encryption that will play a big role in improving the overall security capabilities of current and future WLAN networks. Finally, this paper ends with the conclusion of highlighted issues and solutions.
Security Analysis and Authentication Improvement for IEEE 802.11i Specification

The IEEE 802.11i amendment has been finalized to address the security issues in wireless local area networks. A prodigious amount of research has demonstrated that the IEEE 802.11i specification is sufficient to prevent unauthorized access and use. In this paper, we analyze the IEEE 802.11i wireless networking amendment with respect to data confidentiality, integrity, mutual authentication and availability. Our analysis indicates that a number of serious threats have still not been addressed by the 802.11i amendment. This includes DoS attacks, insider attacks, offline guessing attacks, etc. Furthermore, configuring security features on a commercial Wi-Fi network is moderately-to-very difficult. Towards this end, this paper proposes an improved authentication mechanism which adopts asymmetric cryptography and thus accomplishes link-layer frame protection. Through our further analysis and discussion, we conclude that the proposed mechanism not only prevents potential security threats but also accomplishes autonomic security configuration without human intervention.
