LOCALS' PERSPECTIVES ON TOURISM DEVELOPMENT AT RURAL AND URBAN LEVEL

Journal of Gastronomy, Hospitality and Travel, 2022

The perception of the locals respecting the impacts of tourism can be determined by the factors such as how the community, which they are member of is, affected by tourism; how tourism affects social activities and the attitudes of political and administrative authorities towards tourism. The main purpose of this study is to estimate whether locals' negative perceptions (NP) and positive perceptions (PP), locals' support for tourism development (STD) and community participation (CP) differ at rural and urban levels. The sub-aims are to figure out whether there is any mediation effect and correlations among NP, PP, STD and CP. Data were obtained from Muğla (urban) and Fethiye (rural) through face-to-face surveys with a total number of 400 participants. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), validity and reliability analysis and path analysis for Fethiye and Muğla have performed. No statistically significant effect of CP, PP and NP on STD was found in Muğla and Fethiye. In Fethiye locals' PP have a significant and positive effect on STD. Locals' PP and NP have a significant and positive effect on CP. Consequently, a difference has found between Fethiye and Muğla concerning the impact of positive and negative perceptions on the participation in the tourism processes.

Hongcun, China—Residents' Perceptions of the Impacts of Tourism on a Rural Community: A Mixed Methods Approach

Journal of China Tourism Research, 2010

The article reports the results of a mixed methods research study with a sample of 418 respondents in a quantitative study and semistructured interviews with 40 respondents, both sets of respondents residing in the village of Hongcun, Anhui Province, China. The quantitative study involved approximately 43% of the adult village residents. Hongcun is a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage site that hosts over 500,000 visitors a year, of whom the majority are domestic Chinese. The research was informed not only by past literature relating to the community impacts of tourism but also issues pertaining to place attachment, research paradigms, and the relevancy of past non-Chinese research to the Chinese context. There was evidence that the village still embraces tourism although disquiet existed as to past contractual arrangements made on behalf of the village. It was also found that the quantitative and qualitative data were mutually congruent, although the latter provided insights missing from the former. It is recommended that when past research is replicated in new cultural settings there is a need for a mixed methods approach to be adopted because dependency upon quantitative methods alone may fail to provide important contextual material.

Tourism as a socially sustainable tool for rural development: Case: Mutianyu village, China

2010

Rural areas around the world are facing serious problems today such as aging and population decline due to loss of employment opportunities and services. Many rural areas have turned to tourism in search of a better future and it has revealed its potential to sustain rural communities by providing significant income and opportunities. However, poorly managed tourism development can also destroy rural communities, which are extremely fragile to rapid social changes. Tourism can act as a saviour or destroyer. The theoretical framework of this thesis is based on literature, examining the principles of rural tourism, sustainability and the importance of social sustainability in the development and management of rural tourism. The aim of this thesis is to evaluate the potential of tourism as a socially sustainable tool for rural development, specifically in the small Chinese village of Mutianyu under the Great Wall. A specific focus is on The Schoolhouse company, an up-scale lodging and restaurant company in the village, opened in 2006. The village has obtained major economical benefits from tourism, however, little research has been conducted on how tourism has actually socially affected the community. The aim is to evaluate whether this kind of development can sustain the village community in a socially sustainable manner and thus whether it could be further adopted in other rural areas in the future. The study is planned to mainly assist The Schoolhouse in future tourism development. The empirical part of this thesis consists of twelve qualitative theme interviews conducted in Mutianyu with community members. The interviews were conducted in September 2009 and each lasted 20 to 30 minutes. The results reveal that villagers have gained significant economical benefits and increased incomes from tourism development and they put great value to it. The villagers also perceive better infrastructure and built environment as major positive impacts of tourism, whereas increased traffic, noise and air pollution as negative impacts. The attitude towards tourism is generally highly positive, while attitudes towards The Schoolhouse are surprisingly indifferent, although clearly more positive than negative. According to this study tourism can be used as a socially sustainable tool for rural development, however, careful management, balancing and community involvement are required. The needs and opinions of local villagers need to be taken into account in all tourism planning and social impacts need to be proactively assessed. The Schoolhouse appears to offer a good model for socially sustainable tourism development, but there are also some recommendations for future, to reduce the social problems caused by, for example, increasing noise and traffic.

Rural residents' perceptions on economic impacts of cultural and promotional aspects of tourism

Ekonomika Poljoprivrede (1979), 2021

This study investigates residents' attitudes to tourism impacts (marketing, culture etc.) on Fruška Gora Mountain (Serbia), within the larger framework of economic impacts. The correspondence analysis of the perception of local residents showed that residents have a generally positive attitude towards the development of tourism considering its economic aspects, and then the desk study show edjustification of positive attitudes, thus confirming the main hypothesis. According to the analysis of the opinions of the local residents, it was found that the local residents positively perceived economic impact of tourism in two aspects: through increase in number of employees (employment and self-employment) as well as through the development of the community. The development of tourism in any destination in evitably leads to an increase of domestic and foreign investment, which then leads to the construction of infrastructure and suprastructure facilities, the introduction of various tourist taxis, and if it is possible, as it is the case with Fruška Gora Mountain, it can lead to a successful cross-border cooperation.
