Therapeutic Alliance in Psychodynamic and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy
Traces the theoretical development of the construct of therapeutic alliance from psychoanalytic tradition to current clinical application in terms with psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral therapies. How the opposed ideas on transference and countertransference have developed the concept of therapeutic alliance and therapeutic relationship is discussed in this study. Strong alliance and its elements, and correlation between alliance and outcome are reviewed within some researches. In addition, development of the alliance term in cognitive-behavioral therapies as well as rupture and its resolution are discussed in detail. Psychodynamic-interpersonal therapies and cognitive-behavioral therapies are compared both in a theoretical perspective and research literature review. At last, the causes of failing to establish a strong therapeutic alliance are discussed.
