Intrusion Detection System for Detecting Malicious Nodes in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

Communications in Computer and Information Science, 2011

A mobile ad hoc network (MANET) is a self-configuring infrastructure less network of mobile devices connected by wireless links. In this network, a mobile node behaves as a host and a router at the same time. MANETs are highly vulnerable to attacks than wired networks due to their characteristics. Ad hoc network maximize the total network throughput by using all available nodes for routing and forwarding. Hence, a node can misbehave and fail to establish route or route the data due to its malicious activity to decrease the performance of ad hoc network. In this paper, we propose an intrusion detection system to detect the malicious nodes in MANETs. The propose detection algorithm is divided into two phases: Detection during route establishment and Detection during data forwarding. The detection effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is more than 80% and for some cases detection effectiveness may reach to 100%. The silent feature of propose scheme is its simplicity and effectiveness in detecting malicious nodes.

Detection of Malicious Node in MANET: Issues and Challenges on Intrusion Detection

Proceedings of National Conference on Recent Trends in Parallel Computing (RTPC - 2014)

The mobile ad-hoc network is more exposed to being attacked, their some fundamental Properties, such as dynamic topology, limited power and limited bandwidth, it is very hard to achieve absolute security in the mobile ad hoc network. Attack avoidance method like encryption and authentication are not enough for reducing the possibilities of attacks. However, these methods are designed to prevent for a set of possible known attacks. These methods are not able to prevent newer attacks that are originated in the existing security measures. So, the mechanism is needed to detect and response for these newer attacks. This paper explores and classifies current techniques of Intrusion Detection System (IDS) on MANET and we have study various intrusion detection techniques in MANET.

Investigating Intrusion Detection Systems in MANET and Comparing IDSs for Detecting Misbehaving Nodes

World Academy of Science, Engineering and Technology, International Journal of Electrical, Computer, Energetic, Electronic and Communication Engineering, 2008

As mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) have different characteristics from wired networks and even from standard wireless networks, there are new challenges related to security issues that need to be addressed. Due to its unique features such as open nature, lack of infrastructure and central management, node mobility and change of dynamic topology, prevention methods from attacks on them are not enough. Therefore intrusion detection is one of the possible ways in recognizing a possible attack before the system could be penetrated. All in all, techniques for intrusion detection in old wireless networks are not suitable for MANET. In this paper, we classify the architecture for Intrusion detection systems that have so far been introduced for MANETs, and then existing intrusion detection techniques in MANET presented and compared. We then indicate important future research directions. Keywords—Intrusion Detection System(IDS), Misbehaving nodes, Mobile Ad Hoc Network(MANET), Security.

The study of Intrusion Detection Techniques for Cooperation of Node In Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET)”, International Journal of Engineering Sciences & Research Technology, Vol. 1 (9), pp. 505-513, Nov. 2012.

"Since there is no infrastructure in mobile ad hoc networks, each node must rely on other nodes for cooperation in routing and forwarding packets to the destination. Intermediate nodes might agree to forward the packets but actually drop or modify them because they are misbehaving. The simulations in show that only a few misbehaving nodes can degrade the performance of the entire system. There are several proposed techniques and protocols to detect such misbehavior in order to avoid those nodes, and some schemes also propose punishment as well. It is very difficult to design once-for intrusion detection techniques. Instead, an incremental enhancement strategy may be more feasible. A secure protocol should at least include mechanisms against known attack types. In addition, it should provide a scheme to easily add new security features in the future. Due to the importance of MANET routing protocols, we focus on the detection of attacks targeted at MANET routing protocols This includes WatchDog and Pathrater approach. A watchdog identifies the misbehaving nodes by eavesdropping on the transmission of the next hop. A path rater then helps to find the routes that do not contain those nodes. "

Intrusion Detection in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

Computer Communications and Networks, 2009

In recent years mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) have become a very popular research topic. By providing communications in the absence of a fixed infrastructure MANETs are an attractive technology for many applications such as rescue operations, tactical operations, environmental monitoring, conferences, and the like. However, this flexibility introduces new security risks. Since prevention techniques are never enough, intrusion detection systems (IDSs), which monitor system activities and detect intrusions, are generally used to complement other security mechanisms. Intrusion detection for MANETs is a complex and difficult task mainly due to the dynamic nature of MANETs, their highly constrained nodes, and the lack of central monitoring points. Conventional IDSs are not easily applied to them. New approaches need to be developed or else existing approaches need to be adapted for MANETs. This chapter outlines issues of intrusion detection for MANETs and reviews the main solutions proposed in the literature.

An Effective Intrusion Detection System for MANETs

In the recent decades the mobile wireless communication becomes more attractive because of its applications in many fields. Moving from the wired communication to wireless communication, the security is the most important property to consider. Specifically in the mobile environment it has the vulnerability, because of its portability and scalability. The mobile ad hoc wireless communication has characteristics such as open medium, distributed environment and changing topology, it makes the network into most vulnerable to the attackers to make the intrusion. The attackers (intruders) can easily enter into the network and compromises the network to behave in the favors of his choice. The Mobile Ad hoc NETwork (MANET) should have the capability to detect such intrusion (attacks) and remove it. To survive the MANET from such intrusion, an Intrusion Detection System (IDS) should be enhanced to the MANET, which can efficiently identify the attacks of the intruders. In this paper it is discussed about various intrusion detection mechanisms and techniques for the MANET to detect the intrusion and intruders.

The mobile ad-hoc networks (MANET) is a new wireless technology, having features like dynamic topology and self-configuring ability of nodes. The self -configuring ability of nods in MANET made it popular among the critical mission such as military use and emergency recovery. But due to the open medium and wide distribution of nodes make MANET vulnerable to malicious attackers. So to protect MANET from various attacks, it is crucial to develop an efficient secure intrusion-detection system for MANET. In this paper, we focus on various intrusion-detection system in MANETs. A Survey on Some Currently Existing Intrusion Detection Systems for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

Mobile Ad-Ho c Network (MANET) is one of the most promising technologi es that have applications in military, environm ental, space exploration and forestry industry areas. This typ e of network has attractive features such as its low transmission p ower to conserve energy, increase throughput, and reduce delay. However, it suffers from many constraints, incl uding limited resources, and the use of insecure wireless communication channels. D ue to the lack of defense, the security of these networks is a worthy concern, particula rly for the applications where confidentiality has prime imp ortance. Thus, any kind of intrusions should b e detected b efore attackers can harm the network in order to op erate MANET in a secure way. In this article, we present a survey of the state-of-theart in Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs) that are prop osed for MANETs.
