The 2022 Global Philanthropy Environment Index: Slovakia
The 2022 Global Philanthropy Environment Index, 2022
Philanthropy in Slovakia is a hybrid phenomenon with two faces: a traditional face and a modern one. The document reviews the legal and institutional environment for the operation of philanthropic institutions, domestic tax and fiscal issues, cross-border giving, political, economic and socio-cultural environment and future of philanthropy. It concludes that the philanthropic sector in Slovakia is gradually developing, but it is far from meeting its real potential. Charitable behaviour becomes more common in part due to the improved socio-economic conditions, which increases the financial capacity for giving by the middle class, and partly due to the intensified activity of philanthropic organizations approaching donors in offline and online spaces. However, Slovakia still has a way to go in overcoming the challenges that the lingering idea of “otherness” and institutional mistrust has on charitable behaviour in the region. It is foreseen that there will be a continued increase in online giving through existing charitable portals and crowdfunding platforms.
The paper seeks to assess Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Activities by corporate in Zimbabwe as a case study of developing countries. A survey research approach was adopted to gather qualitative descriptive data from a convenience sample of 96 company executives from 20 companies most of which were parastatals at a university training program using a self-administered questionnaire to gather descriptive qualitative data. Findings showed that 90% of the corporate organisations participate in corporate social responsibility of which 80% of the organisations in Zimbabwe concentrate on philanthropic activities (those with a short term solution). It was concluded that corporates and their Non Governmental Organisations counterparts, participate in CSR but their activities have only short to medium term benefits to the community, therefore philanthropic. It was recommended that corporate leaders adopt the CSR concept which goes beyond philanthropy and contribute towards sustainable development.
DEVELOPMENT OF PHILANTHROPY SCALE
Science and Education, 2018
Philanthropy is willingness to help someone without expecting to get a benefit. The purpose of this research is to develop a reliable, valid scale that measures the level of philanthropy. A draft form created by researching the litera-ture and composition of participants was applied to 356 people studying at Gaziosmanpasa University Faculty of Edu-cation (241 female students and 115 male students). As a result of Exploratory Factor Analysis and reliability studies, the scale reached 25 items with 3 factors. These items explain the variance at 42.286%. In order to increase evidence of validity first-order Confirmatory Factor Analysis was applied to the 3-factor model obtained. For this analysis, 310 people studying Gaziosmanpasa University Faculty of Education have been researched. As a result of the analysis, it has been found that the scale shows good compliance and the model is verified as a result of this research. Reliability analysis was performed on data set of 310 participants (203 female 107 male students). Cronbach Alfa internal con-sistency coefficient values were found at 0.759 in total score, 0.749 in sub-dimension of “disinterestedness and sinceri-ty”, 0.702 in sub-dimension of “love and unconditional acceptance” and 0.700 in sub-dimension of “honesty”. Relia-bility level was found at a high level. As a result of confirmatory factor analysis, the fit indexes of the scale were found to be perfect (p=.000 and X2/sd= 1.725). RMSEA, GFI, AGFI, CFI, NNFI and IFI values were 0.048, 0.89, 0.87, 0.093, 0.93 and 0.93 respectively. These show a good level of compliance. Consequently, all these results show that the devel-oped scale is valid and reliable. Keywords: attitude, altruism, unconditional acceptance, philanthropy, disinterestedness.
This paper presents, in the perspective of values, the choices and motivations of individual donorspeople who make donations in money, properties or timeto social projects of the Brazilian Third Sector. A random sample of convenience involving 200 individual donors has been studied in the city of São Paulo in order to verify, according to the theoretical model of values and motivational types of Schwartz, the possibility of an association between the motivational values and the characteristics of the act of donations. Data were submitted to a descriptive statistical examination, to tests of the averages differences between the types of donation, and to the multi-varied analysis (Factorial, ANOVA) of both evaluative and motivational patterns. The dimensions of self-enhancement and conservation suggest a differentiation between the types of donation, with a priority for cash donations. We found a significant statistical difference for the group of cash donors, in terms of values characteristics such as power, achievement, self-direction, security and traditionthat is, the prioritized values in the discernment of this donation.
In the 19th century, subsistence of the people attracted the attention of the literary and journalistic professions, researchers (economists, lawyers and philosophers), physicians and churchmen. The History of Charitable works discussed herein was an unusual case. The above article quotes a number of issues taken up in the journal by the title friends of mankind, who propagated humanitarian ideas. They called for giving the poor with elementary education, genuine medical care co-funded by the government, and they urged the spreading of rules of hygienic life among the masses of the poor. They denounced beggary at the same time, demanding the rehabilitation of idlers through work. Readers leafing through the History of Charitable works may be surprised at the pervading belief that the elites should have a right to control and intervene in the way of life, education and habits of people in poverty. The contents of articles published show that such a perception was bred by a sense of compassion, enlightened rationalism, yet also by justifiable fears of fatal diseases, especially smallpox, spreading. Today some of those practical indications, especially regarding education, mass nutrition practices or children work, are likely to turn off readers. But they should be viewed in their context of real conditions and intellectual currents of the late 18th and the former half of the 19th centuries many historians describe as the epoch of philanthropists.

Philanthropy Transformed: Emerging Change and Changes in Charities
Journal of Futures Studies, 2009
Addressing the question "whither philanthropy" requires mapping "from whence philanthropy" before exploring emerging issues that could transform philanthropy, charity, and giving. This essay briefly sketches the roots of philanthropy in Western culture, and categorises the range of philanthropic activity that developed to the present. The issues that philanthropy has traditionally addressed are divided into acute (short-term) and chronic (ongoing) projects of amelioration, and acute and chronic projects of creativity. The essay then focusses on the key issue of emerging changes, and how they might impact three key components of philanthropy: philanthropic intent, philanthropic infrastructure, and the issues that philanthropic projects attempt to address. The final sections include a brief thought experiment exploring where emerging issues might take philanthropic activity in future, and suggestions as to possible points of leverage for immediate action.
Morality and Philanthropy: A Discourse
This paper examines the nature of morality in human society, that is, what ought to be done to alleviate the sufferings of others in the society and give a helping hand in situations of necessity and empathy. This shall be done by theorising on the issue of philanthropy, which might be equalled to altruism-a theory of conduct that aspires to the good of others as the ultimate end for any moral action. This is a form of support being rendered to individuals, societies and groups; looking at it not only from the normative angle but also examining and thematising it from meta-ethics -language discourse and analysis.
On the Modern Meaning of Philanthropy
The academic study of philanthropy presupposes a comprehensive definition that guides inquiry into what, exactly, philanthropy is and why it matters. At present, though, no such well-thought-out definition exists. Scholars tend to explore various facets of philanthropy, according to their particular academic interests, but without a comprehensive understanding of its full meaning. This article attempts to correct this lack of synoptic understanding by surveying prominent instances of usage and definitions of philanthropy in the modern era and synthesizing them into a overall framework for understanding its full modern meaning. In so doing, philanthropy is revealed to be a signal word, the evolution in the meaning of which reflects historically dominant philosophical and cultural trends in modern Western society. The subject of this article is further explored in a forthcoming article, to be published in the next issue of Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly, titled “On the Classical Meaning of Philanthrôpía.”
