Should Medical Students Be Educated About Dental Trauma Emergency Management? A Study of Physicians and Dentists in Kerman Province, Iran

Since physicians sometimes need to attend a case of dental trauma, it is necessary that they possess suficient knowledge of management of traumatic dental emergencies. This study was conducted to assess the knowledge of dental trauma among dentists and physicians. A three-part questionnaire, including demographic data, knowledge, and self-assessment, was administered to 104 dentists and 151 physicians in Kerman Province, Iran. Data obtained from 255 completed questionnaires were statistically analyzed using t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, chi-square, and Pearson correlation coeficient. Among the physicians, only fourteen (9.3 percent) had received education regarding dental trauma. In contrast, seventy-seven dentists (74 percent) had received information on what to do if a tooth is traumatized. Regarding knowledge level, only 10.6 percent of the physicians had high knowledge, while 66.3 percent of the dentists demonstrated high knowledge. The differences of knowledge level between the two groups were statistically signiicant (p=0.0001). More than half of the dentists (58.3 percent) and nearly all the physicians (98.7 percent) were dissatisied with their level of knowledge and suggested that further education on the topic should be offered.

Knowledge and Attitudes about Dental Trauma Among the Students of the University of Split

Objectives Dental trauma among children is a common problem, and everyone who works with them needs to possess appropriate knowledge and skills to provide proper care at the site of the accident. The aim was to evaluate the knowledge of emergency management of dental trauma among students who should be capable of managing such injuries in their future career. Knowledge about Dental Traumatic Injuries among Dental Interns -A Cross Sectional Survey

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the level of knowledge about dental traumatic injuries among dental internsMaterials and Methods: A self‐administered questionnaire comprising 10 close‐ended questions was used in this survey. The questions were to asses knowledge regarding dental trauma. Data of 200 respondents were analyzed using SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Studies) version 22.0 Results: The response rate was 76.8%. Knowledge of Emergency Management of Traumatized Teeth among Schoolteachers in Mashhad, Iran

Background and aims. Dental trauma is an important oral health problem in children that requires immediate and appropriate management for long term success. The aim of this study was to evaluate the knowledge of elementary school teachers about emergency management of traumatic dental injuries in children. Materials and methods. A total of 163 teachers from 21 elementary schools from Mashhad, Iran participated in this study. Data were collected using a two-part questionnaire comprised of questions regarding demographic data and participants' knowledge about dental trauma. Results. The level of the teachers' knowledge was moderate (53.3%). Of the 163 participants, 104 (63.8%) were females and 59 (36.2%) were males. Among several predictors that were surveyed in this study, only the age of respondents significantly impacted the teachers' knowledge (P = 0.004). Conclusion. The results of this study showed the moderate level of knowledge of teachers regarding emergency management of traumatized teeth. Adding dental trauma management courses in the teacher training curriculum and requiring teachers to be updated in regards to this issue can improve their knowledge and thus led to better management of traumatic dental injuries in children.

Knowledge and Attitudes of Elementary Schoolteachers on Dental Trauma and its Management in Yazd, Iran

School is one of the places with the greatest prevalence of occurrence of traumatic dental injuries. The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge levels and attitudes of elementary school teachers towards dental trauma and its management. In this cross-sectional study, 281 elementary school teachers were selected through cluster sampling to answer the prepared questionnaire. The data obtained from the questionnaires were analyzed in SPSS software by using ANOVA test and t-test. p Value<0.05 was considered to be significant. Evaluation of knowledge levels about dental trauma (avulsion) and treatment approach of the students of medicine and dentistry faculties

Aim: In this study aimed to evaluate the knowledge of 4th and 5th grade students of Dicle University Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry and their approach to first intervention in the face of avulsion, which is the one of the types of dentoalveolar injuries. Material and Method: 300 students selected by random sampling method among 4th and 5th grade students of Dicle University Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. 17 questions and a questionnaire consisting of three parts were applied to the total of three hundred students from two faculties. The data obtained in this study were analyzed with IBM SPSS 21 package program. While interpreting the results, 0.05 was used as the significance level. Results: There is a statistically significant relationship between the faculty and the previous trauma/emergency or first aid course status (p <0.05). While 34% of the medical school and 86.67% of the dental students had not taken a trauma/emergency or first aid course before, 66% of the medicine faculty and 13.33% of the dentistry faculty have previously taken a trauma/ emergency or first aid course. There is a statistically significant correlation between gender and previous trauma/emergency or first aid course status (p <0.05). While 76.64% of women and 51.3% of men had not taken traum /emergency or first aid courses before; 23.36% of women and 48.7% of men have previously received a trauma/emergency or first aid course. Conclusion: According to this study, it is thought that the medical and dental faculty students who came to the clinical stage of their education had insufficient knowledge about dental trauma, so it would be appropriate to provide dental health information with more comprehensive and understandable way in the education curriculum of the faculties. It will be appropriate to give interdisciplinary seminars, case presentations and lectures on practical emergency response on dental trauma.

General Dental Practitioners' Knowledge about the Emergency Management of Dental Trauma

The aim of this descriptive cross-sectional study was to assess the general dental practitioners (GDPs)'s knowledge regarding the emergency management of traumatic dental injuries (TDI) in Isfahan, Iran. In this study a two-part questionnaire consisting of 14 questions was distributed among 241 GDPs. Part 1 included seven questions focusing on personal and professional information and part 2 asked questions about seven given cases of dental traumas. One score was dedicated to each correct answer; the total score of 0 to 4 was considered as poor knowledge, while scores 5-8, 9-11 and 12-14 were assigned as moderate, good and excellent knowledge, respectively. The data were analyzed using the Student's t-test and one-way ANOVA. The Influence of Dental Trauma Education on Undergraduate Students at Ajman University, United Arab Emirates: An Interventional Study

Background and Objectives: The main objective of this study was to assess the impact of a lecture on dental trauma on the knowledge of undergraduate dental students at Ajman University in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Methods: Fourth-year dental students were asked to attend a lecture on dental trauma and then respond to an online questionnaire containing 10 close-ended questions related to their approach to managing dental trauma cases and tooth avulsion before (T0) and directly after (T1) the lecture. They were given 5 min for filling the questionnaire either time. McNemars test was used to compare the accuracy of their answers based on the correct or incorrect response for each question. The level of significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: The questionnaire was sent to 164 students, out of which 157 responded, giving a response rate of 95.7%. After receiving the educational intervention, the students showed a significant improvement in their knowledge on managing permanent tooth avulsion, especially regarding the handling of an avulsed tooth before replantation, extra-alveolar time, and media used for the storage and transportation of avulsed teeth (< 0.001). Conclusion: The study reveals that the lecture on dental trauma had an excellent outcome on the knowledge of the students. Therefore, it is essential to emphasize the importance of this information among undergraduate dental students in order to save teeth exposed to trauma and to reduce the social burden of such cases. This study contributes to better understanding of the effect of dental trauma education on undergraduate dental students' knowledge of the subject.

Dentists’ knowledge and practice about emergency management of dental trauma

Introduction : Traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) are not uncommon but there is a notableinadequacyregarding dentists’ readiness to manage these injuries. Proper immediate management of TDIs increases the long-term prognosis of traumatized teeth and depends extremely on dentists’ knowledge. Assessment of schoolteachers' knowledge about management of traumatic dental injuries in Al-Madinah city, Saudi Arabia

This study aimed to assess the knowledge of primary and intermediate schoolteachers about the management of TDIs in Al-Madinah city, Saudi Arabia. A previously validated, self-administered, anonymous, close-ended structured questionnaire was administered to schoolteachers in 13 different schools. It included two parts: basic demographic information (part one) and questions regarding the management of dental traumatic injuries (part two). A total of 178 schoolteachers voluntarily completely filled in the questionnaire. Nearly 28.1% of the teachers acquired a first-aid training program and 6.2% only learned about dental injury management in first-aid training.
