Background The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the Australian food supply through changed consumer purchasing patterns, and potentially, household food security. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of COVID-19 on the prevalence of food insecurity and food supply issues, and perspectives of food supply stakeholders in regional Australia. Methods A mixed-methods consumer survey and in-depth interviews with food supply stakeholders were conducted in regional Australia, more specifically South West Western Australia between May and July 2020, immediately after the 1st wave of the pandemic. Results The prevalence of food insecurity was 21% among consumers, and significantly more prevalent for those aged less than 30 years and living with a disability. Most consumers (73%) agreed that the COVID-19 pandemic had impacted the food supply. Food insecure respondents were more likely to report that food was more expensive, resulting in changes to the types and quantities of food bo...
Agri-food supply chain and disruptions due to COVID-19: Effects and Strategies
Brazilian Journal of Operations & Production Management
Goal: The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has severely affected the global economies. It has a considerable effect on the agri-food economy and the linking food supply chains. The entire agri-food sector needs more attention because the concept of ‘work from home’ does not work here, and life cannot move even a single step without food. This paper offers a future agri-food sector perspective amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Design / Methodology / Approach: This paper explores the short-term and long-term effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on agri-food supply chains (AFSCs) based on the available information. The regulatory mechanisms taken by different government agencies, NGOs, and the food industry to manage the demand & supply disruptions are also discussed. Results: The detailed effect analysis of the COVID-19 on agri-food supply chains and remedial strategies are conducted for different interfaces of AFSC, viz. production, handling & storage, processing & packaging, distribution...
Series The agrifood system and the challenges of COVID-19 The role of wholesale markets in the pandemic: challenges and opportunities. No. 5. Santiago, FAO., 2020
Wholesale food markets are the main marketing channel for hundreds of thousands of farmers, especially family farmers. They are responsible for supplying food to a vast and diverse network of small and medium enterprises. Wholesale markets also operate as retailers, receiving direct consumers and buying groups in their spaces. Therefore, from the beginning of the pandemic, FAO and other regional organisations – jointly with governments and wholesale market management – developed strategies to ensure that the health crisis does not turn into a supply crisis, to avoid the closure of wholesale supply centres or markets, facilities and farmers’ fairs in the region
Impact of COVID-19 on the Supply Chain of the Food Industry: A Literary Analysis
Impact of COVID 19 in the Food Industry , 2021
he devastating impact of COVID-19 on different T business functions cannot be undermined. This effect was highly disruptive for the food industry where a number of businesses closed down whilst a significant number of businesses had gone bankrupted. Considering this stance, this study explored the impact of COVID-19 on the supply chain of the food industry which was also the objective of this study. The research opted for interpretivism paradigm and qualitative research approach, following which literary analysis of the previous studies conducted within this domain was compared and analyzed. Findings of the study identified that COVID-19 directly hindered the food industry's supply chain in the times of seasonal employment where most of the migrant workers were unavailable due to sickness, lockdown restrictions, or any sort of travel restrictions. Besides that, streamlining and managing the flow of food ensuring that all the stages of the supply chain in the food industry are completed effectively was identified as another key challenge. Likewise, economic shrinkage and reallocation of resources paralyzed the economy of many countries and, hence, hindered governmental institutions' capacity to provide financial incentives to the companies. In addition, logistical efficiency was also affected due to prolonged lockdown, devastating the fine-tuned schedule and causing disruption in the food supply chain. Therefore, many foodproducing companies either closed their operations or had to reduce their production or operational capacity, which further resulted in increased demand, less supply, and less sales or profitability of the food businesses. it is recommended for the food businesses to consider restructuring their business models specifically related to progressive investment in the domain of supply chain. Companies need to foster collaboration among different actors or stakeholders of supply chain including an integration of raw material supply, manufacturing of food products and a streamlined chain of their supply in the market.

Supporting a Local Agro-Food System in Covid-19 Times
Anthropology and Ethnology Open Access Journal
This paper is about a farmer's market community's response for a local agro-food system as a response to COVID-19. We focus on small-scale farmers in the Piedmont region of North Carolina; identify some of their challenges, and the roles farmers markets played to provide local food access, especially when many other businesses were shuttered. We highlight several challenges faced in supporting a local agro-food system, for they are linked to small-scale farmer's production, harvest, marketing, and the publics' access to fresh farm products during the COVID months. A political economy framework was used to guide this research and examines the COVID-19 response-from March 2020-August 21, 2021. Through informal interviews and participant observation (when possible) we identify challenges and creative solutions enabling access to farmers markets and local fresh produce. The intricacies and interwovenness of syndemics within the context of this coronavirus and its emerging strains, acerbated by climate variability and the vulnerabilities by that experiencing food insecurity, and are challenging problems going forward for many communities, rural and urban alike.

The present study explored COVID-19 outbreak impacts on the food system in terms of agro-food production, distribution networks efficiency, and emerging food consumption patterns according to food experts' perspectives. Individual level data were selected from a sample of 59 executive managers of different domains representing agro-food businesses, agro-food cooperatives, and agro-food consulting firms and public institutions. The empirical analysis addressed the effects of the COVID-19 crisis to all the stages in the food chain and attempted to indicate the factors that could influence the trajectory from "farm to fork" under uncertain circumstances. Factor analysis elicited the underlying dimensions of experts' viewpoints toward the operation of the food system during COVID-19 pandemic. Data were also elaborated through hierarchical and k-means cluster analysis and the cluster structure was further validated by discriminant analysis. A two-cluster solution emerged, revealing differences in experts' perceptions toward the aftermath of the pandemic on agriculture (socioeconomic impacts on rural areas, impacts on agricultural production), food processing businesses (decline in the economic viability of food businesses, sharp economic downturn in the food industry, economic recession, incentives for innovation), food distribution networks (distribution channels fallout, food supply disruption), and consumers' food habits and preferences (increasing interest in health protection, adoption of unhealthy eating habits, demand for innovative and sustainable foods). These segments were identified as "skeptical food experts about COVID-19 impacts" (33.9%) and "alarmed food experts about COVID-19 impacts" (66.1%). Our findings highlighted the main disruptions that the food sector should overcome to meet consumer demand for safe and healthy food products and also ensure food availability and food system resiliency.
