What is a good quality research manuscript or paper? (original) (raw)

Refining a Research Manuscript

A well-written research article is quintessential for the innovative work to be appreciated and receiving a good number of citations. But writing a good research article is not an art. With due care and understanding the focus requirements can help a researcher to present his work with high scientific impact. The seeds of a research article are in the primary research or discovery by a researcher, which once communicated and peer reviewed takes the form of a publication and triggers further scientific pursuits in future. Before beginning to draft a research manuscript, it is important to decide upon the journal a researcher wants to publish his work in. The draft can be then prepared according to its format requirements. But a standard flow of information in any article is as follows: abstract followed by introduction, details of materials and methods and then results leading to discussion and conclusion and ending up with acknowledgments and references. A research report is an objectively written piece where no personal anecdotes are included. The research article should not be written in first person and it should be attempted that there are least number of grammatical mistakes or mis-spellings in the article. The choice of words may also affect the impact or curiosity generated from the article, fancy words are better avoided and words reflecting knowledge like define, ABSTRACT OR SUMMARY The article begins with the abstract, which is summary of the research work. It is a concise and focused representation of research work indicating the aim of the study, the methods used, results and major findings as a conclusion from the studies. It ends with the implications for future. The abstract gives a first-hand impression of the impending article to the reader and needs to be written precisely and with clarity. The researchers should refrain from writing extended background or methodology. Few keywords may be given at the end of abstract representing the field of significance of the article and will help future researchers in searching for appropriate references. Abstract is a must for every article and missing information or too much description are the common errors. The abstract must follow – introduction – purpose – methodology – results – conclusion – future implication format.

Innovative Research: Writing an Effective Abstract to Improve Your Article Quality and Readability

International Journal of Research and Scientific Innovation, 2021

There are plenty of good reasons why every researcher should invest time and energy in writing and abstract. It will form the basis for several key decisions: whether an editor sends out your submission for review; whether the reviewer accepts that review Invitation; and whether other researchers read your published paper. Unless your article is open access, the title and abstract are the only elements freely available to everyone. Increased readership means a higher possibility of having your work referenced in subsequent research publications! Consequently, it is critical that your abstract be accurate. Several frequently asked issues from early career researchers are addressed in this review article, including what is the optimal length for an abstract and how long an abstract should be. Which information should be provided and how much detail? Moreover, what kind of language is most effective? You will walk away with a better knowledge of the importance that the abstract can play in the success of your paper, as well as the steps you can take to guarantee that it is the best it possibly can.

Writing an Effective Abstract for a Scientific Paper

The publication of scientific paper is an integral part of the research communication process and the career in academia. In the course of scholarly writing, writing an abstract for a scientific paper is both a crucial and challenging endeavor; it should be accurately represented succinct summary of an entire document. The paper discusses the basic format with essential key components of a good abstract for a scientific paper writing and provides a basic guidelines for novice researchers and academia. The paper is based on review of scientific paper, extracted systematically from 'Google Scholar' search engine by using basic search strategy. An exhaustive but selective method was used to select the relevant literatures. In fact, the primary purpose of an abstract writing is to facilitate the communication of key findings with the readers so they can easily and quickly ascertain the gist of an entire work. More importantly, when writing an abstract, the fundamental five key components such as research context and objectives, brief outline of materials and methods, key findings, conclusion and significance/implications should be taken into account to accurately represent the entire paper.A well-written abstract enables readers to quickly and accurately recognize the fundamental content of a manuscript.

Writing a scientific paper abstract

Archivos Argentinos de Pediatria, 2015

The main objectives of scientific meetings include encouraging the exchange of experiences among participants. Making such experiences known to others is usually achieved through an "Abstract," defined as an abstract from an original research, a clinical case report or a professional experience. An abstract is a piece of scientific writing that, even though it refers to a larger piece of writing, it should be absolutely independent and convey knowledge in an understandable manner.

SCIENTIFIC ARTICLE PREPARATION: A COMPREHENSIVE INTRODUCTION

Problems of Education in the 21st Century, ISSN 1822-7864, 2019

Writing and publishing scientific articles (research, review, position etc. articles) are referred to as responsible academic activities. Any scientist/researcher is somehow involved in scientific writing. Thus, this is a technique assisting the researcher with demonstrating individual performance. Most of the main scientific/research journals are published in English, and therefore scientific information is made internationally available by a wide audience and actually becomes accessible to every scientist and/or researcher. On the other hand, a valid point is that scientific/research journals are published in different national languages. Nevertheless, it should be noted that science policy has recently become one-dimensional and resulting in a blind orientation towards support for scientific/research journals published in English. As noted by Poviliunas and Ramanauskas (2008), national languages face a legitimate risk of becoming domesticated and to one degree or another being excluded from scientific, cultural, education and public areas of life. However, this is material for another discussion. Still, every researcher finds relevant to properly prepare a scientific article, i.e. describe the conducted research and publish the obtained results. The previous editorial attempts were made to discuss the fundamental structural elements of the scientific/research article, including the title, summary and keywords (Lamanauskas, 2019). This time, efforts are exerted to share certain insights and gained experience in writing the introduction to the article.

“The Art of Successful Publication” ECCO 13 Workshop Report

European Journal of Cancer, 2006

An abstract should be concise (approximately no more than 150 words), explain why the study was performed, identify methodology but only essential factors, summarise major results with statistics where appropriate and give a firm overall message or conclusion. Abstracts should contain all the relevant key words for future literature research. Abstracts without data are not informative and will probably lead to rejection of the manuscript.

Towards an ideal abstract in academic writing: Some crucial components

Jozac Academic Voice (JAV), 2024

It is required for every research, journal paper, and academic thesis or dissertation to have a scientific summary of the whole work. This paper aims to present some components of writing an ideal abstract in academic writing. A systematic literature review and personal observation were done to achieve this aim. It was found that an ideal abstract should have a title, author's name and other details, an introduction, the aim of the study, methodology, findings, conclusion, and some recommendations based on the study's findings. It was also noted that around five keywords must be included at the end of the abstract. Conclusively, if the highlighted components are written methodically, they will collectively provide a clear and organized overview of the research thereby helping readers and assessors to easily grasp the purpose, methodology, findings, and implications of the study. It was also recommended that scholars should always meticulously write abstracts for their scholarly works to enable readers and assessors to quickly decide on the work.

The Common Move and Step in Research Article Abstracts

Jurnal Pendidikan: Teori, Penelitian, dan Pengembangan, 2021

Abstract: Move and step are components that can provide effective contribution to overall communicative purpose in research article. This study aims to investigate the moves and steps in 48 abstracts publication from cross-disciplinary study under UM journal website. The design of this study is qualitative research. Swales et.al (2014) and Hyland’s (2000) models are used to identify moves and steps occurrence. The result shows that the majority of abstracts use M3 (46 abstracts), M4 (44 abstracts), M2 (40 abstracts). Authors mostly apply step 1 in M2 (40 times), step 1 in M4 (42 times), and step 3 in M3 (35 times).
