The descriptions of the languages found in conquered countries have been made for a long time by people linked to colonialism, especially spiritual colonialism, with colonial ideology and colonial interests and with the application of theories and concepts built and elaborated from other languages. Models of description created in different socio-political and cultural contexts, which offer peculiar characteristics, were applied, in addition to colonialist attitudes of supremacy. The methodological approach of this analysis is based on the critical analysis of discourse. The objective is to analyze the emergence and history of conceptual meanings and ideologies that continue to be a guide and a persistent imprint of current linguistic thought created in the colonial spirit, many of which persist in linguistics until today. The examples are mostly taken from the descriptions of Native American languages: the empirical methods elaborated for eliciting linguistic data, errors in the definition of categories and their causes, the context of application of the descriptions for practical purposes, such as teaching and translation for the purpose of Christianization, as well as the connection of linguists with the colonial administration.
